So soon? Oh, you know, I thought it was going to take like a few more years but damn, Kage No Jitsuryoku Ni Naritakute S2 hit the air waves again about a year later. Obviously you can tell I was not impressed with this series contrary to popular opinions that a lot of people liked this show. Otherwise, how it got a second season, right? Especially the main character who wants to be a background character but at the same time wants to be some superhero of justice and doing it all from the shadows. How confusing and conflicting. So yeah, why am I watching this then? Oh well, that silly hope of mine that perhaps this season would change my mind. Heh. I should already know myself better but oh well…

Episode 1
Shadow Garden report to Shadow as they note of strange movements of funds in Lawless City, a place that doesn’t belong to any nation. This piques Shadow’s interest as he tells them he will handle this one himself. At Lawless City, Goldy and Quinton think they can best this crazy dude. Got their ass whooped, that’s for sure. Now we see why Cid wants to come to this city. After Claire won Bushin Festival, she dragged Cid here to celebrate her victory. On the way to the Dark Knight Association, some slave trader wants to sell them human pets. Yeah, so badly beaten up, Cid can’t recognize they’re Goldy and Quinton. Later at the alley, he sees a few people beating up a hapless ghoul. But when the moon suddenly turns red, the ghoul fights back. Anyone gets bitten will turn into one too. Cid is in a dilemma whether to do something about it but is saved by this vampire hunter named Mary. He finds her cool?! So now he wants to play this game?! Soon chaos spreads through Lawless City as it becomes like Resident Evil. Sorry, it’s not Thriller Night. Shadow saves a prostitute named Marie from certain death. He spouts cool lines but all obviously borrowed from Mary. This has Marie decide to take her own future into her own hands. Screw whatever contract, she’s getting out. Claire thought her brother is dead but Mary tells her she just saw him alive. She believes Cid is still alive and at Crimson Tower, to be offered as living sacrifice to revive Blood Queen Elisabeth from her thousand year slumber. Both girls agree to team up and head there. Skel and Po are also in this town trying to lose their virginity. Better run if you don’t want to lose your life!!! Crimson watches his rivals, Juggernaut and Yukime fight each other. He thinks they’ll both die once Elisabeth revives. However there seems to be another player joining in the fray. It’s Shadow of course.

Episode 2
Juggernaut and Yukime don’t want to mess with Shadow so they part ways. Then there’s some bloodthirsty grunt thinking he could usurp Shadow as he sensed no magic from him. He attacks but before he knows it, he got cut up. Claire and Mary stumble into Beta in the library. Beta claims Shadow Garden is only here to do research of taking a blood sample from a progenitor vampire. History shows that the possessed and vampires were once from the same bloodline. She hints they don’t get in each other’s way and that is good enough. When #666 (Rose) hears something about Cid, she becomes agitated to know more. Beta tells her off to know her place since Shadow will be the one to deal with Elisabeth. Claire and Mary continue their way but they stumble into Juggernaut killing vampires left and right. Then he attacks them. Both take serious damage especially Mary a fatal one. In order to survive, Mary drinks a bit of Claire’s blood. She revives back to normal. However Juggernaut is still superior. Right before they get killed, Shadow saves them. A single hit is enough to send Juggernaut flying. Mary tells Claire the truth that she is a vampire. A thousand years ago, vampires used to hunt humans and live luxuriously off their blood. But once their weaknesses were found, the tables turned. Elisabeth was living among humans as a ruler of a small fiefdom. She wanted both sides to get along so she and her subjects stopped drinking blood. Haven was created for this. While her subjects evolved and lose some of their vampire touch, Elisabeth remained the same with the typical vampire weaknesses. Then the red moon phenomenon in which turned Elisabeth into a bloodthirsty vampire. This resulted in the destruction of Haven. In order for this mistake not to be repeated, she killed herself and hoped Mary who was her maid at that time, to scatter her ashes into the sea. As she is the Blood Queen, she doesn’t vanish like others so her corpse remained intact. Mary was forced to watch over it for eternity. However she was killed off by Crimson who took Elisabeth’s body. Now he is attempting to use her for his own ambitions. Claire hints she is a possessed and there were signs when she was young. She knows she’ll turn into a monster one day and hopes to have Cid achieve something before that happens. Shadow stumbles into the treasure room. Happy, he thinks of making a flash entrance. Just as Crimson put Elisabeth’s heart into a new vessel to revive her, Shadow kills him off!

Episode 3
Shadow doesn’t find anything he wants here so he leaves. Meanwhile Mary and Claire just stumble into a resurrected Elisabeth who quickly pierces Claire and then drinks her blood. Shadow Garden a little too late to come to her rescue and even if they fight and slay Elisabeth, she can easily regenerate by using their blood. Not even Yukime and Juggernaut jumping into the picture for some fun could do anything. They’re easily taken out. Claire then starts to have an awakening. However she finds herself inside the infirmary of a high school with Aurora before her. Some explanations about her power. Basically what I understand is that her blood types have merged and although she has gained some power, she finds it hard to control. Hence Aurora gives her some weird symbols on her left arm to help control it. When they return to reality, Aurora takes over Claire’s body. As the original vampire, she easily turns the tables on Elisabeth. However Claire’s body cannot handle all the power and breaks. Aurora isn’t panicking and knew this would happen. All this is just to buy time for him to arrive. Who? SHADOW! Now we see him fighting on par with Elisabeth. Beta thinks he is protecting everyone rather than attacking Elisabeth (which he could easily do) but the way I see it, he is trying to protect and minimize all the coins and treasures he stole. The fight reaches its climax and just like that, not sure what Shadow even does, the red moon is gone and everything reverts back to normal. WTF. What just happened?! In the aftermath, Cid tells us about whatever names theses monsters have, ghouls or vampires, they are all just the effect of magic overload. Claire seems sad and lost as she tries to tell Cid about this new power. However whatever it is, he assures her he will always support her. That at least cheered her up. Cid notes Claire will continue to face some struggles but that is how kids grow up. More importantly, he manages to save all his treasure and that translates into a lot of cash back home. Even if it is not enough for him to be set for life and whenever he is in a financial pinch, he can always come back to Lawless City because it’s his piggy bank.

Episode 4
Shadow Garden kills off shady people working for the seemingly respectable Mr Garter who serves Mr Gettan, the president of Major Corporate Alliance (MCA). Everyone has their dark sides. Shadow now goes under the alias of John Smith as he meets Yukime who tells him Garter has a meeting with MCA as they are plotting Mitsugoshi’s downfall. She notes both companies will destroy each other and warns him about Gettan and his exceptional sword skills. He is a dangerous fellow and it sounds like she wants revenge on him. As Cid hangs out with his friends, he notices a different money note. Looks like MCA made their own note and that is why today they have some grand sale to commemorate its release. However this only makes Cid mad because while the Mitsugoshi’s notes were more refined, this is a much cruder copycat. So he goes back to talk to Yukime and I don’t get this money economics he brings up. From what I understand, because people find it troublesome to carry heavy coins around, hence the popularity of paper money and the creation of credit that allowed Mitsugoshi to reap hefty interests from the coins sitting in the vault. The irony that paper has more value than real metal. He has this suggesting of making a profit in counterfeit bills. But Yukime points out it is not legal tender and for it to work, it can only be done on a small scale. With Shadow in shock, Yukime misinterprets his actions that he is not impressed. So she further adds that perhaps with the counterfeits, this will make people doubt the value of the paper money and they’ll run to the bank to exchange it for gold and that’s where they can monopolize the profits. Shadow leaves so Yukime thought he was testing her sincerity. Then we see Delta bugging Shadow to go hunt with her. Raiding one of the secret bases and Delta killing her useless brother. Don’t worry, she has hundreds of brothers and sisters so less 1 weakling makes no difference. She suggests Shadow defeat her father and he too can have hundreds of kids! He’ll pass. Garter reports to Gettan about their reducing personnel over the past few months. This will affect those running their public enterprises. After all, they’ve invested a huge sum in bribing legislators to set up their bank and print their money. However Gettan tells him to do as he is told and is reminded who put him in this place that controls the commerce of this city. Realizing Mitsugoshi is tougher than he thought, he is going to take drastic actions to steal their trade secrets.

Episode 5
Gamma offers to take care of intruders entering their premise. Well, Gamma being the clumsy oaf, blunders all the way and you bet the intruder is pretty confused. Yeah, he knows she is more than he can handle and tries to escape but Gamma’s clumsiness proves to be her greatest luck as she somehow defeats him. Is there anything else to say? And those guys were supposed to be some elite team under Gettan? No wonder he is disappointed. He also laments with the cult running low on resources, it is the best time to show his power. MCA is just a stepping stone until he fully gets all the power he wants. Shadow meets with Yukime as they talk about the distribution of the fake bills they have made. Yukime is hell bent to get revenge on Gettan for taking everything from her. She won’t stop until she takes everything from him. Shadow won’t interfere but advises not to stray into the wrong path. As Alpha realizes the seeping in of counterfeit bills into their store, the same too for Gettan. He narrates about his plan to collapse the faith in the credit of paper money. This is why he has also circulated their own fake bills. By bringing the downfall of credit, this will bankrupt both MCA and Mitsugoshi. But this wasn’t supposed to take effect until all the cult’s assets in MCA were recovered. However those assets are mixed up in the various public businesses and organizations. If they sit back and let this counterfeit circulate, they stand to lose more money. A small group of Shadow Garden that #666 is in, infiltrate a train carrying counterfeit goods. However they are caught by surprise in a trap set by Shadow (in his John Smith disguise). He boots them out of the train. While #666 clearly wants to continue the fight, her comrades advises her not to because they will definitely fall for the same trap since their enemy is strong. #666 laments being weak.

Episode 6
#666 reports to Alpha about how formidable John Smith is. He is in fact on par with all of Shadow Garden. Alpha has more pressing issues like some mission she sent Zeta on. She has not been contacting them so she is assuming the mission going on smoothly despite heavy resistance from the cult. Delta is sent to deal with John Smith. She attacks the train but we know Shadow doesn’t even break into a sweat as he deals with this rampaging maniac. But soon Delta realizes he is Shadow from his scent. She learns he is undercover and doing this as a secret. That is why he forbids her to tell Alpha or his mission will fail. This means she also cannot help him on this mission. In exchange, he gives her another mission to hunt Juggernaut instead. Because Delta has not contacted Alpha and some memento of her was found, they assumed she got killed?! Alpha starts to believe this is all part of John Smith plans to destroy both MCA and Mitsugoshi. With the fake bills circulating, Gettan continues to order his men to search for the source and this means setting checkpoints of everything that comes in and out of the capital. Now it is angry Alpha’s turn to attack John Smith. Try as she might but she cannot best him. Soon with all those unique moves, she realizes he is Shadow. Why do this? He claims he has tossed away that name to become John Smith. This only leaves her madder and more confused. She thinks he believes she is not good enough to support her. In her desperate bid to prove she is of worth, she attacks again but this time loses badly. She is saddened Shadow has abandoned her. Now Shadow meets with Yukime who explains their plan is going well and at this rate the cult will be bankrupt and MCA finished. This will affect Mitsugoshi and soon the kingdom’s economy will fall into chaos. Yukime then narrates about her origins. Especially her lesser clan who always fell victim to conflicts from greater clans after the fall of some god of theirs. Hence they tried to deepen ties with those allied to them. Gettan and Yukime were engaged to each other and she truly loved him. However he soon killed everyone who was a pacifist because his belief is that strength is power. If he doesn’t take it from them, they’ll take it from him. Yukime wasn’t spared and got slashed too as he believed she too rejected him. She survived and made her way up via prostitution at Lawless City after losing everything. Hence her true goal is not to amass a fortune but to find Gettan and take everything from him.

Episode 7
With panic setting in, the public is trying to change their notes for gold. At the same time, many of MCA branches have closed down. Gettan learns Yukime is behind this counterfeit and sensing her nearby, he goes to confront her. Meanwhile Alpha is depressed. She believes Shadow has abandoned them for failing to live up to his expectations. Even with MCA collapsing and Mitsugoshi slated to be next, she doesn’t care anymore. But when she receives news that the cult was supposed to circulate counterfeit bills, she realizes could it be Shadow’s plan to usurp them by flooding their own fake bills before the cult? Then Beta enters with good news as she has deciphered Shadow’s mystery letter to her. Shadow admits he turned traitor to beat the cult in their game. Now that they don’t have MCA on their side, they will be the only losers. He went alone so as not to tie all of them together. Like they say, to deceive your enemies, deceive your allies first. Alpha is relieved that Shadow has not abandoned them. Shadow has been defeating those who want to steal his money. But it seems a huge stash has been stolen and Yukime’s subordinates claim they saw Gettan doing so. He is going to take back what is his! Uhm, I thought he stole them?! Gettan loses to Yukime. But because of the cult’s drug, he powers up to defeat her. He still thinks he can take it all as long as he has the power. Before he deals the finishing blow, Shadow arrives to beat him up. Taking back what belongs to him. With Gettan defeated, Shadow forces him to say what is needed. If he refuses, Shadow beats him up until he does so. While lamenting things would’ve been different if he had that power, he thinks maybe he didn’t want them to take it from him. All he wanted was just to protect. Gettan dies and leaves Yukime in Shadow’s care. As Shadow buries Gettan, Iris inspects Garter’s vault. It is empty and she arrests him. Alpha approaches Yukime and passes her a letter from Gettan. She believes the cult was the reason that led Gettan astray. Telling Yukime the truth about Shadow Garden and all, she wants Yukime to join their side against the cult. She agrees. Mitsugoshi survives the credit collapse since they have stacks of gold lining up for the people. Shadow and Delta are digging through the snow to find his stolen coins. None. Delta trying to get Shadow to make good his promise but he is trying to shift the goalpost and confuse the hell out of her with some guilt trip.

Episode 8
Skel and Po go bug Cid to go hit on some chicks. However he is not in but they see some premium tickets to some hotspring inn. Losers decide to take them and invite some Mitsugoshi chicks. But when they see them in possession of those tickets, they are captured and interrogated! They want to know how they got those tickets. Did they steal them? Obviously they lie that Cid gave it to them to invite the girls. Unsure of this, the rest of Shadow Garden convene to discuss about this. Could this be another secret test from Shadow? Flashback shows long ago when Shadow defeated some guy over some Dragon’s Tears, he told Shadow Garden to keep digging to find it. Well, it hit a hotspring mine and that’s how the inn was established. Since there are 6 tickets and assuming half of it is reserved for the guys, this means only 3 of them can go. Since Shadow Garden wants to be with him, you bet they’re going to fight for it. Well, just rock-scissors-paper. And the lucky ones are Beta, Delta and Zeta. They are not pleased Skel and Po showed up. Where’s Cid? They lie he’ll come later so okay, let’s get going. Of course other Shadow Garden girls are in disguise. Looks like all having an awful lot of fun time as Alpha thinks this is Shadow’s way of giving them some time off. Of course the losers decide to go peep on the girls’ bath section. Security sprays gas into their eyes. It seems their tears cause the water to react. This has Shadow Garden remember the Dragon’s Tears legend. A dragon and a princess were close friends until war broke out. With her kingdom in ruins, the princess cried but the dragon cried more, flooding the entire area. When the princess came to be, the dragon was nowhere to be found and the area is now a lake. So everybody bullies Beta into shedding some tears. The water then activates and turns into a dragon spirit. Shadow Garden goes into action to subdue it. They believe it is Shadow’s intention to free the dragon. The result now rains golden tears. They take advantage of this ‘special event’ to sell them to customers. Alpha has only thanks for Shadow for giving them a great day off. Yeah, Shadow/Cid was never to seen anywhere this episode! The losers return home, not remembering much of what happened today but they think they ascended into adulthood. Dream on!

Episode 9
Rose still has nightmares of killing her father. Now she joins her fellow comrades as well as #559 to do recon over the cult’s suspicious activities at some ruins in Oriana. #559 claims that only she and #666 have received special blessings from Shadow. However she doesn’t trust #666 and will see if she is worthy to serve under Shadow. As they spy at the ruins, they see the cult gathering to activate something and retrieve some ring. However, to #666’s shock, the one who is the key to activate this is her mother, Reina! It seems royal blood is needed. #559 orders to kill everyone and obviously #666 can’t kill her mother and protects her. Reina even pleads for help. #559 deems this as betrayal as the fight rages on. Meanwhile Cid has been wandering around as he notes the situation in Oriana continues to be in chaos. As there is no official ruler since the king’s death, now the fight is between Perv’s faction and those who are still loyal to the old regime. Cid has this idea of a mysterious character coming in to save the kingdom’s situation. He wants to make Rose the next ruler and since she might become lost and a tyrant, he too will step in to guide her to the correct path. Such great dreams. Cid is currently eating at a diner Marie is running. However, ruffians come in to extort their usual protection money in which she doesn’t have. Cid plays the lame pathetic guy to tell them to lay off Marie and gets his ass whooped. Of course later he goes to their hideout and kills all of them and takes all their loot. As Marie is having financial trouble, she is about to resort to selling her body again but Shadow leaves a bag of gold coins. She is happy that Shadow has been watching her. #559 is about to lose to the cult’s general but the moment she sees Shadow in the background, she powers up and kills this f*cker! She is thrilled with his presence as she tells about #666’s betrayal although the other comrades try to reason her actions. It seems #666 has left Shadow Garden and returned to her previous life as Rose. Shadow doesn’t understand a thing they said until he finds out Rose is getting married! He gets angry! What was the killing of her father for then? This is betrayal! She will pay dearly! Shadow dashes off into the sky to hunt down Rose.

Episode 10
I don’t know how but Cid is able to walk into the royal palace because Epsilon is working as some associate to Perv. Whatever. Due to some changes in protocol, ordinary people like Cid are not supposed to enter but Perv will have him demonstrate something. And so Cid dazzles everyone with the piano with his Moonlight Sonata. During that, Cid steals from all the unsuspecting guests their rings and jewellery. Especially that ring from Perv. When Cid wants to go tour the place, a maid who once served Rose, volunteers to do so. Because she has zero silicon as boobs?! WTF?! I don’t know what she’s blabbing about but all Cid cares is asking about Rose whereabouts. Of course she tells him but she also notes how much she hates her because she killed her father and threw the kingdom into chaos. Cid then bumps into some fat ugly guard who starts ranting away about his jealousy because he is in love with that maid. Whatever. Cid sneaks away and makes his way to where Rose is held. She misses him a lot but when he asks about her marriage, she changes her tone and wants him to forget all about her. He reminds her of all the struggles she made up till this point. Is she going to throw it all away and go back to that perversion? All Rose wishes for is for Cid to find his own happiness. That is all. Later, we see Perv abusing Rose. He reminds her that Reina’s life is in his hands so she better improve her attitude. Obviously Cid witnesses it all and now his mind is set. Epsilon talks to #559 about Rose and wasn’t the latter’s fault since the mission failed as she was not told about Rose’s mom. In fact, Shadow Garden knew about it but hoped Rose would never find out. They talk about some ultimate destruction as described in the legends that will destroy the land. They continue to believe Cid has a further goal since he is handling this case himself. Speaking of which, he returns and claims it has been solved. Wow. So magnificent. Meanwhile Perv reports to Mordred that their plan is moving along smoothly. If all goes well, their power in the cult will be secured. This means Perv will be granted a seat in Rounds. And what’s this? Perv having an affair with Reina?!

Episode 11
Cid ponders the situation of Rose being forced into this marriage because Perv holding Reina as hostage. WTF the maid and Epsilon trying to fight over Cid? How unsightly. So much so, Cid had to strip and escape from their clutches and play Moonlight Sonata in his undies to the crowd. Yeah, a better option. Later Epsilon talks to him about some Black Rose legend but Cid’s priority now is to find Reina. Not hard to find. Making out with Perv as they plot they won’t need Rose anymore once the ceremony is over. Rose is surprised when Shadow shows himself before her. He takes her to see the truth. Oh man, how long have they been doing it because Perv and Reina are still making out! More revelation as they reveal they were the ones who drugged the late king. Rose is in so much shock that she faints. When she comes to, she sees Cid playing his piano. Realizing she has nothing left, no more kingdom, betrayed the organization who took her in, only Cid was the one who stayed by her. Let’s run away from this madness. Well, not sure what cryptic lines Cid said but I believe it’s more like don’t give up. He gives her that ring. Cid is now confident that with everything in place, the rebellion will take place at the wedding and that is when the lion will awake. Before the ceremony, Perv realizes his ring is gone. Panicking, he thinks of making an excuse to delay the ceremony but a call from Mordred confirming once this is over, a seat of Rounds will be his. As the wedding starts, Rose makes a shocking statement when she says she will not marry Perv. She accuses him of all the plot and with this ring her father left for it, she puts it on. Suddenly a recording pops up all over the kingdom. It is her father doing his last recording. He knows he is being drugged and by the time this video is out, he will already be dead. He points out Perv as the mastermind behind all this but assures his citizens not to fear because Rose will be their new leader. His final words are his love for his daughter. With the video over, all the nobles turn against Perv. Don’t want to be associated with this scumbag. Just then, Perv gets decapitated. Yeah, his head rolling before Reina’s feet doesn’t even move her! Feeling bored?! She too gets decapitated! The culprit: Mordred. He then activates Rose’s ring to summon the Black Rose. This is the truth behind the legend. A huge demon named Ragnarok starts decimating the place. The kingdom going into ruins again? Not if Shadow comes to play!

Episode 12
As Shadow relishes fighting Ragnarok, Mordred fights off Beta and Epsilon. He thinks his special sword can best them but how wrong he is and it will be him who will soon know his place. Rose and other Shadow Garden members help fight off other magical beasts. Yeah, the whole kingdom is a mess. Again. When Mordred is defeated, it’s time he spills the beans. He starts off explaining that there are several other dimensions and realms. However as observed, these many worlds revolve around a single point. Maybe that is supposed to be God. However the more interesting stuffs are the revolving worlds. Taking a certain planet as an example, magic did not exist until a world collided into it. Magic then flowed into it. Damn, are they saying this was what wiped out the dinosaurs?! This also begs the question if humans came from another dimension! With this logic, there are also stuffs that went to another world. Lost city of Atlantis is an example. Holy sh*t! You mean that is not fiction?! Thus it is also believed Diablos came from another realm. So back to Oriana’s history, in some war when monsters from another dimension popped up to slaughter all, the cult rescued them by closing the gate. This means the royal blood would be the price to pay and this means Rose was to be offered to the cult when she was an infant. The king refused to do so and look what happened. You think Ragnarok will destroy everything? Well, look at how Shadow is having fun mincing it to bits despite its regeneration! Mordred can’t accept this absurdity so he merges with Ragnarok to become some hideous monster. Even so, no match for Shadow. Yeah, nots sure what Shadow rants about some scientific stuffs. But he kills off Mordred and a light so bright that can be seen from the entire galaxy! Amazing nobody went blind. Shadow sees a strange vortex and touches it. He gets absorbed into it and disappears! Oh no! Well people, you remember Akane? Yeah, it has been years and she has been doing her own investigation over ground zero. She’s still bitter about that tragedy and each time she looks at the moon, she is reminded of him. Then she is kidnapped by punks. This time they are part cyborg! Déjà vu as she might be raped and beaten to death but a familiar sound crashes in. Yeah, it’s that Stylish… Uhm, whatever! But nope. Not him anymore. Because he has upgraded to Shadow! Your worst nightmare is back!

Shadow(per)verse & Shadows House
So haven’t you heard already? Well, there is good news and bad news. I’ll tell you the bad one first. If you’re wondering why this season is shorter than the first season, that’s because there is going to be a movie sequel! Oh my God. The next arc is a movie?! Yeah, that’s bad news to me. But the good news? Because it is a movie so you bet it gives me an excuse not to watch it! HAHAHA!!! I’m set free from this! Hooray! I don’t have to watch this crap anymore! Unless they make another season after that and returning to the TV format… Oh boy… Then I would have missed another arc… Sighs… Why am I even agonizing over this…

As you can already very well tell, I am still not impressed with this season. It continues to confuse me and truth to be told, I don’t even know what is happening but more or less the same thing. Oh you know, Cid playing his Shadow persona and being the overpowered motherf*cker he is, continues to throw his weight around seeing nobody else is close to give him a challenge. Then as usual, his Shadow Garden harem are so trusting of him that they believe all his actions have to do with the good of the future that they can see, only which Shadow himself has envisioned. Yeah, makes you wonder if he is so damn good, why does he need Shadow Garden in the first place if he can do everything himself. Oh right, I almost forgot. He doesn’t. They’re just tagging along and assuming everything by themselves and hence the biggest chuunibyou following ever. Heh. Though I have to admit that the final episode revelation about different realms did sound interesting a bit. No, not because of the existence of many other isekai worlds but rather how the worlds collide and transfer/disappear its essence into the other. Have to admit that is the most interesting theory I’ve heard. And now that Shadow is back to his own world, maybe he can do make do what’s right. He is more powerful than before. Yeah, now he can literally stop an atomic bomb with his own bare hands!

Just like last season, this one splits its season into smaller story arcs. Looks like they stayed true in destroying everything whenever the arc finishes. Yeah. So we start off with this Lawless City thingy and as usual, I don’t really understand what that arc is all about. Perhaps to introduce some new characters and that vampire thingy which I don’t see how relevant is that for this season. Maybe in future arcs but as far as this season is concerned, I was left confused. Next we got that economic thingy arc that also confuses the hell out of me. Spice And Wolf it was not and yeah, perhaps it was just some revenge thingy for Yukime and Shadow Garden to secure more funding. Why need so much more money? Aren’t they already dominating everything? Money is never enough! Finally, Rose’s arc. Oh yeah. I guess I was wrong predicting Rose will get a training arc because screw that and let’s throw Rose into more despair! But hey, at least it gives her character some closure and kill off that pain in the ass Perv. So I guess he won’t be the main antagonist in the long run. Just a small fry. Good riddance. Yeah, looks like Mordred too. Just when he makes his full proper appearance, Shadow erased him. Now he can be one with God. Oh sorry, these people will be burning in hell. Now I have to wonder if the many layers of hell is it because of all the different dimensions’ version of hell clashing together!

Also as you might have guessed, I don’t see the characters changing in much ways and I am still not impressed with them all. Especially Cid/Shadow. Yes, this guy because he is so overpowered, he can do anything he wants. Then as usual, he spews us a lot of his sarcastic monologue. I supposed this is supposed to be the punch line and joke to whatever but I don’t really understand them. Yeah, seeing how bias I am towards this character, I will continue to accuse him that such monologue jokes just fall flat! I don’t find them funny, Cid! I still hate his character of wanting to show off in the shadows despite wanting to be the biggest mob AKA background character. In fact, there was one episode that puts Skel and Po into the limelight. To be honest, that was actually the best episode and my favourite episode of this series! Really! These background characters might be idiots but at least they stay true to their perverted goals. Yeah, surprised that I actually find them more likeable than Shadow and his female operatives. And as cherry on top of the icing, that filler episode has no presence of Shadow or Cid whatsoever! So refreshing!

The other big disappointing characters are Shadow Garden themselves. Here I thought we would at least get a better fleshing out of their past but unfortunately, none of that. Yeah, with only a dozen episodes, looks like the fleshing out will have to wait for future stories in future seasons. But because of that, it feels like they are insignificant. Which is an irony since they are shadowy operatives and should be shrouded in mystery. The closest drama that came was when Alpha thought Shadow abandoned them because she and the rest couldn’t live up to his standards, My dear girl, all of you can never be on par with his standards! It’s not like Cid really cares about it all and lets them do as they wish. And because of that, their perception of Shadow as God puts him so high on the pedestal that it has blinded them in so many ways. Shadow can never do any wrong! There must be a reason why he did so! Because Shadow’s success is 100%, this continues to further clout and cloud Shadow Garden’s perspective of him as they grow bigger and bigger. Yeah, Shadow Garden is just a huge Shadow fan base, RIGHT???!!!

Then the other girls too are disappointing. Again, blame the lack of episodes but it feels that those that have appeared in last season, are even more insignificant here. Remember Alexia and Iris? Yes, still around but they have no prominent role. Just cameos to remind us they are still around. Better than Annerose and Beatrix who didn’t even pop up at all this season. What a disappointment. Better than those useless guys, Goldy and Quinton. Still remember these jokers? The most disappointing of them all? Remember Sherry? Oh yeah. I thought she would return this season to exact revenge on Cid/Shadow. But I guess this is not her season. Hey, can’t rush revenge. Sadly, didn’t even appear here either. Even Akane gets a final episode cameo. This shows she wasn’t a one-off character and might have a bigger role to play. Let me guess, will she be part of Shadow Garden in the future or a new Shadow Garden will be formed in this original world?! So I guess this girls whom Cid/Shadow have all broken before, I suppose don’t want to break them again. Because look at Rose. The sh*t she has to go through before she regains her pride and strength. This all part of your plan, Shadow? And to think he really got mad when he heard Rose went back to be Perv’s bride. Oh yeah. I thought I should see more of that expression especially when his plans don’t go as planned. Oh right, almost forgot about Claire. From the way things look at the end of Lawless City, looks like she is a broken woman. That’s another girl to add to your broken list, Cid. Now it’s your sister. Happy now?

Action wise, still pretty much the same stuffs. By now I should resign to the fact Shadow is so overpowered that not even God can touch him. He isn’t as flashy as last season only because there isn’t any huge events like fighting Aurora or Iris. Art and animation remains like last season and yes, still a lot of dark scenes. While last season’s seiyuus were retained, I thought Cid/Shadow sounded different when he impersonated John Smith. Yeah, they employed another legendary seiyuu for that: Jun Fukuyama. Don’t forget other cameos like Saori Hayami as Elisabeth, Shizuka Itou as Yukime and Tomokazu Sugita as Crimson. The other new casts are Daisuke Namikawa as Gettan (Rock in Black Lagoon), Tsuyoshi Gugita as Juggernaut (Vassago in Sword Art Online: Alicization), Miku Itou as #559 (Miku in Go-toubun No Hanayome), Mao Ichimichi as Marie (Bada in ClassicaLoid), Ai Kakuma as Mary (Rossweisse in High School DxD), Chafurin as Garter (Henpeita in Gintama) and Yuuko Minaguchi as Reina (Akiko in Kanon).

OxT is retained this season to sing the opening theme, Grayscale Dominator. Although their trademark rock style is still there (in fact, sometimes I sound it’s like a copycat of their other songs), this one doesn’t impress me like last season. This season’s ending theme is Polaris In The Night although all have different versions sung by a different Shadow Garden member who did not sing in the first season. So now it’s their turn, huh? This means the ending credits animation remains the boring fashion like in the first. Just a still picture of the Shadow Garden girl in focus as the special effects slowly reveal the whole picture. Yawn… But I have to admit that the special ending theme for episode 7, Everything Is Changing by Mayu Maeshima as a slow rock sounds better than the rest.

Overall, for the umpteenth time, I am not impressed with this series despite my initial fake optimism hoping to change my mind. The stubbornness is strong within me. Mainly Cid/Shadow as the main culprit who bulldozes his way through everything. Yeah, sounds like I’m jealous of him. Okay, maybe I am. Even Superman has a lot more realistic issues than this pure fantasy garbage! Heh. Bet you don’t even remember this was an isekai anime until the final episode to somewhat remind us, right? Only true fans will continue to love this trash because for viewers like yours truly who are still not impressed in the end, this season is more or less the same like the first but only worse because more confusion in the story and characters. Sure, the light novel is still ongoing but you know me, don’t read the source, don’t even want to watch the upcoming movie and certainly hell no I didn’t play the mobile game version that was released back in late 2022. YOU MEAN THERE WAS AN RPG MOBILE GAME OF IT???!!! Don’t tell me they’re going to come up with a Broadway-like stage play! Considering Cid/Shadow, it might crazily happen! How much f*cking attention does Cid/Shadow wants?! All I want is to be a background character and happily watch some decent animes. Is that too much to ask?!

You know the drill in almost every typical isekai genre. Main character gets killed off and reincarnated as an overpowered character with almost every skill, magic, talent whatsoever at his disposal. The same could be said for Kage No Jitsuryokusha Ni Naritakute but the difference is that our main character doesn’t want to stand out and prefer to dispense his justice from the shadows. So uhm, the main character is trying to be a background character? That’s how I would interpret it. Pretty confusing and conflicting. But that still doesn’t take away the fact that he is an overpowered character in an isekai genre. Yeah, so can we still hate his guts for that?!

Episode 1
Akane Nishino hates this classmates of hers, Minoru Kageno. It isn’t that fact that he always mispronounces her name incorrectly, rather he has never looked into her eyes directly and is always off starring in the distance. Akane continues to play the popular girl liked by everyone and even becoming the teacher’s pet. This is due to a trauma in middle school. She was in show business but a scandal happened that forced her to quit and now she is hiding behind another mask. One day, her driver fails to pick her up. So she walks home and a couple of ruffians kidnap her. Before losing consciousness, she sees Kageno in the distance. She wakes up in the warehouse as the ruffians reveal they kidnap her for ransom. This is in fact her second kidnapping after that scandal. Then, she was almost raped by her stalker and now this ruffian wants to do the same. Of course here comes Kageno to save the day. Oh sorry, it’s the balaclava wearing Stylish Bandit Slayer! WTF?! He easily beats up this punk and faces off with the other who is an ex-military man who is looking for some fighting thrill. Kageno manages to fight on par and eventually get the better of him thanks to his expertise in using crowbars. Yeah, poor guy beaten to a pulp. After freeing Akane, he disappears into the shadows. He notes that if this is the rate he takes to defeat a military guy, he will never become an Eminence in Shadow. Thanks to Akane’s father pulling the strings, this incident is covered up as she returns to her normal school life. She is surprised Kageno finally calls her name correctly. This thought of hers that he too might be wearing a mask like her. But there is no way for her to tell anymore because the next day, he gets killed by a truck! Now we hear Kageno narrate his love for becoming a hero started young. He continued to be passionate about it as he grows up while being a nobody. He soon realizes that despite all the martial arts he can learn and the strengths he can hone, there will be a limit. Because he is only human. I mean, what can he do when a nuclear bomb strikes him? Just evaporate and die, right? So in order to achieve his dream, he has to overcome his limits. And now with this isekai treatment, he has that wish. Because now he has magic as he orders his team to start their mission. He is one who doesn’t want to be a hero or a last boss. But one who operates from the shadows while showing everyone their greatness AKA an Eminence in Shadow.

Episode 2
In this fantasy world, he retains memories of his former life despite being born as a baby. Cid Kagenou as he is reborn as, the son of a baron aristocrat in some backwater town. The family produces dark knights for generations but the one in focus is his older sister, Claire. Because of that, Cid is free to do as his wish as he becomes the Eminence in Shadow fighting bandits at night. After another usual kill and taking their stolen loot, he finds a cursed rotting blob and brings it home. After so many experiments, the blob then reverted into her original hot chick elf form. Cid makes up a story that she is the descendent of the heroes who slew the Demon Lord and thus their enemies are the Cult of Diablos whose aim is to revive the Demon Lord. Calling her Alpha, he introduces himself as Shadow and invites her to join his group, Shadow Garden to hunt in the shadows. As nobles turn 15, they are sent to an academy in the royal capital to further train as dark knights. Claire is supposed to be ready for that but on the night she is supposed to depart, she got kidnapped. Cid talks to Beta (one of the many comrades she picked up for Shadow Garden) about the possible hideouts the baddies has taken Claire. Has Cid ever been wrong? They will storm that place tonight. Claire is kidnapped by Viscount Grease but when he notes about Cid’s abnormality and wants to know more about him, this makes Claire very mad as she breaks out of her chains. Nobody messes with her family. Or does she want the exclusive right to torment her brother?! Too bad she is punched out. Grease then hears how his elite men are dying like ants because of some invaders. Shadow Garden is here to rescue. Grease gets mad thinking they know about the Cult of Diablos and fights Alpha but realizes he is no match and escapes. Bad luck because now he has to fight Shadow who even gives him some sword lessons. Greases doesn’t think Shadow knows about the deep depths of darkness but Shadow remains confident he will only dig deeper. Some short snippets about desperate Grease dabbling in darkness for his daughter but I guess we don’t care at this point. Grease is defeated and the rescue mission is a success. Claire returns home agitated but the next morning pretends like it was nothing and heads off to the capital. Cid wishes to go there too as it is a big exciting place. Don’t worry, in 2 years he’ll be there. In the meantime he will have Shadow Garden work for him. Hate to break it to you but Alpha and the rest tell him it’s time to leave him. WTF?

Episode 3
Alpha claims they are off to fight the cult on the international scale. Cid takes it as her nice way of saying they know all this were made up so they’re leaving him. A few years later, Cid is now on his way to the academy as we see a flashback of Kageno wanting magic so badly (smashing his head against a rock?!) and then he got hit by a truck. At the academy, Cid relishes his life as a lowly background character with his equally loser pals, Skel and Po. Because Cid lost a bet by getting last in his grade, he is forced to play a penalty game to confess to the popular Princess Alexia Midgar and get brutally rejected. Wow. You mean Cid really wants to experience this?! So we see him all nervous but that is just an act. Surprisingly Alexia accepts! WTF?! Now the entire academy is in shock. Who is this bugger who became Alexia’s boyfriend?! She even joins him for lunch and tries to be rude to get dumped. It didn’t work. She then pulls some strings to join her class in a fencing class. As he spars her, he thought she was matching his moves but realizes it is all just really bland. Of course after a few observations and all, Cid has a gist of everything. You see, Alexia is arranged to be engaged to Zenon Griffey who is the academy’s fencing instructor. Hence she took Cid as her boyfriend to spite him and get out of this engagement. It’s not working since Zenon is a patient guy. Alexia will have him play this role until the engagement is off since she also knew about the penalty game after his panicky friends ratted out. So why Cid agrees? She bribes him with money! Yeah, need the funds to fund his shadowy operations! See Cid bark and wag his tongue like a dog for every coin she tosses! The act continues but no progression whatsoever. Cid wonders her problem in marrying Zenon since he is perfect in every way. She claims he is pretending to be perfect but is very flawed underneath. The problem is, she doesn’t know any of his weaknesses. Then he talks about her plain fencing skills as Alexia tells him about her wish to become a great fencer like her sister, Iris. However it is evident she does not have the same thing as she has and now she is even nicknamed as an ordinary fencer. But when Cid says he likes her style, this riles her as she thinks he has an ulterior motive. He just says he hates it when people diss the things he likes. Just like that, Alexia says goodbye. End of relationship? Next day as Cid heads to school, Zenon and his knights surround him. Last night, Alexia didn’t return home. It is assumed she is kidnapped and the last person seen with her is Cid. Care to come answer some questions? All Cid knows is that he is in big sh*t!

Episode 4
Alexia wakes up in a dungeon. Some mad scientist infatuated with taking her royal blood for his whatever experiment. Yeah, what’s Alexia got to do but to lethargically play along. Meanwhile Cid is being tortured. Actually he can withstand the pain. So as not to lose out as a background character, he screams and begs for his life! Zenon offers his help to Iris to find her sister since she doesn’t have enough men at her disposal to look. She has him maintain order at the academy. It’s going to be tough since Claire is like a bull, stubborn on insisting Cid won’t do anything kidnapping. Cid is released. He notices a few spies following him but are disposed by Alpha. Yes, she is back. He thinks they’re still playing along with his game as they come back to visit him from time to time. Alpha reports that their influence is growing although not strong enough yet to take on the cult. She then reports about the cult infiltration the knights so they can’t trust them. It is a reason why Alexia is kept alive because they can’t have her blood if she’s dead. Cid then prepares his room with all the opulence, awaiting Beta’s return. He really wants to impress her, huh? As she reports the action her team will take tonight, Shadow says he is going to take part in tonight’s operation. Because tonight they will also let the world know of their existence. When Cid’s torturers want to frame him for kidnapping Alexia, he kills them off! Mad scientist thinks they are on to him. So he injects the blood into this monster. She becomes strong and first thing she does is to kill him for the mistreatment. Now the monster goes on a rampage. Alexia frees herself and as she makes her way out, is shocked to see Zenon. He admits this is his facility and funded the guy for research. His aim is to get into Rounds, the elite of the knights. Her royal blood will be that ticket. Initially he targeted Iris but Alexia will do. Alexia attacks Zenon but her ordinary skills means she can’t beat him. Okay Shadow, time for your great timing to pop up.

Episode 5
Zenon is going to kill Shadow and earn his ticket into Rounds. We know how this will turn out, right? Meanwhile monster girl is on a rampage. The knights are trying to deal with her but she regenerates. Even Iris dealing her combo after combo of damage didn’t do any good. Until Alpha steps in and says that she is only hurting her. Then she strikes some beam at the monster to end everything and reverts that monster to her original form. It his hinted she is Grease’s daughter. Back to Zenon’s fight with Shadow, the former is left to eat his words as we already know Shadow is superior without even breaking a sweat. Like a typical baddie, Zenon devours experimental pills supposedly to power up. Normal people will die because they cannot control its tremendous power. And yeah, chosen ones like Zenon can. So this discount Super Saiyan is all we get? No wonder Shadow is not impressed. He is shown his place as the beat down continues. Shadow notes he won’t be strong because his power is borrowed. Then a brief about how he wanted to overcome some nuclear and trained himself until he becomes nuclear himself! So this next move is his atomic move?! Woah! A big chunk of the city got destroyed! Iris finds Alexia amidst the mess and is glad she is not hurt. Likewise, Alexia is glad to see her sister. In the aftermath, the incident is covered up and to the public, whatever the case was, it is solved. Alexia thanks Cid for allowing her to find her passion for fencing again. Because Zenon’s body vaporized without a trace, she thinks they should continue this relationship a little longer. See where this is going? Cid rejects her. She smiles and after that we see a huge splatter of blood across the wall. No body was found. As Shadow Garden revel in their recent success, they also note an impending issue: Somebody is going around using their name and also covering up their tracks. Iris thinks there is more to Shadow Garden and the cult. She suspects the knight order to be behind this and it won’t be a surprise since Zenon was one. She appoints her trusted Marco Granger and Glen to investigate this. For starters, the only clue she’s got is this strange artefact and she needs someone to decipher its functions.

Episode 6
A Shadow Garden imposter kills somebody. Iris appoints Sherry Barnett to decipher this artefact. Hesitant at first, her father who is the school’s assistant principal puts faith in her that she can do this. Skel and Po take Cid to a new store to buy chocolates believed as the key to win a girls’ heart. Heh. With the long queue outside, a staff takes Cid away for a survey. She brings him to the base on the rooftop. Cid realizes this whole getup is by Gamma. She is the smartest among his girls but also the clumsiest. As Cid has told stories of his past life, she has taken that knowledge and created and sold stuffs not seen in this world. Business is booming. Yeah, a billion in profits! As she talks about the recent serial killing, Cid thinks he knows who is behind this and will investigate. Gamma has their latest recruit, Nu to assist. On the way back to the academy, Cid feigns he needs to take a dump so he could see what the clashing commotion is in the alley. He believes his rejection on Alexia has turned her into a serial killer. He has no qualms about that but using Shadow Garden’s name is off limits. Too bad, he sees her fighting the imposter and his reinforcements. She gets injured so time for Shadow to step in. She has questions but he tells her to stay out. Shadow goes after the imposter rather than tending to Alexia’s wounds. He manages to kill a couple of them but lets the last one to be interrogated by Nu. Oh he wished he was killed. The mastermind has lost contact with the imposters but it seems he has found the item he has looking for. Alexia and Iris exchange notes that someone is impersonating as Shadow Garden who is fighting against the cult. Iris considers both her enemy as they are wreaking havoc in her kingdom. Skel tries to confess to a senior but too bad her fiancé takes him away for a ‘chat’. He’s a goner. Po? He gets apprehended for being a stalker! So Cid just leaves his chocolates to the girl next to him who is Sherry. When father sees this, he tells her that it could mean the boy likes her and please be mindful to return his feelings.

Episode 7
Nu reports to Cid on her interrogation. Looks like the cult has used a powerful brainwashing method to destroy his mind. No matter what techniques she used, he did not break. She also informs about the cult taking in orphans with magic aptitude to create such underlings. However there are those who maintained their sanity and those are called Named. She confirms there is one in the capital and he is Rex. It is believed their goal is to lure Shadow Garden out. Cid is forced to participate in a sword tournament courtesy from his buddies. He is faced with Rose Oriana who is the student council president. When they clash, Cid feigns a dramatic defeat. But soon gets up and wants to fight. This is to show off how to lose as a background character?! Eventually the referee calls Rose the winner and has Cid taken away. Too bad can’t show off all his moves! Rose admits she might have won the match but lost in terms of willpower. Sherry then sees Cid. She returns his feelings by baking him cookies and hopes they can start out as friends. He is fine with it. Cid realizes who her father is and needs to minimize his interactions with him if he wants to remain as obscure as possible. As Sherry slowly develops feelings for Cid, she remembers him dating Alexia. So she goes to see her. Sorry, it’s not about her research. She asks if she is still dating Cid. Alexia claims they have broken up and in fact, they were just pretending to be dating. Sherry is so relieved and happy. I guess Alexia needs to wait till she leaves before she smashes something. Yeah, frustrating, huh? I bet she lost… While Cid and his classmates are being briefed about the student council elections, the Shadow Garden imposters make their move. They barricade the entire academy with their barrier. Cid notices something wrong as he cannot use his magic although everyone else is oblivious. Alexia returning from outside, realizes something is wrong when she sees blood and dead bodies. Imposters soon hijack the class. Rose will not tolerate this and attacks. She realizes too late her magic cannot work. The imposter is going to make an example out of her but it is Cid who protects her and gets slain.

Episode 8
It seems Cid purposely gets himself killed. Because this is what a background character is supposed to do! A distraught Rose thinks Cid did this because he loves her. After all the students are moved to the auditorium, Cid revives. Yeah, some magic to stop his blood flow, blah, blah, blah. Sherry is still doing her research when Rex barges in. He has orders to take the artefact. However before he can do anything, Glen and Marco fight him to let her escape. Cid revels in this terrorist situation. Something he always wanted to do? Since he has to wait till night for Shadow to make his entrance, for now he snipes at the terrorists. Noticing that Sherry is still running around, he secretly kills the terrorist who are trying to take her out. Yeah, so good that she thinks it’s her imagination. Eventually he meets up with her and learns that she is trying to make her way to her father’s room as there could be more info on the artefact. She eventually finds some details on this Eye of Avarice. It absorbs magic and nullifies them. Because the students are all held in the auditorium, it is possible it is there for its range to be effective. As the terrorists could use magic, it is possible the artefact can be tuned to allow certain frequencies of magic. There is also a danger of the Eye of Avarice absorbing too much magic than it can contain. Yup, a huge explosion. Of course to counter Eye of Avarice is this artefact that she is researching. She needs to fine tune it and then sneak into the auditorium to be used on the Eye of Avarice. Since she left her tools back in her room, Cid offers to go get it. Knight boss is mad at Rex for not getting the artefact as it will interfere with their plans. Rex warns that there is a real skilled person taking out their men. Knight boss won’t be cowed as soon his plans will be realized and be reinstated in Rounds. As Rex makes his way, he gets beaten up by Cid. Too fast for him to even react. Nu investigates the lifeless body of Glen and Marco. Cid then pops up. She reports Shadow Garden has infiltrated the academy and are awaiting orders for him. But Cid has her help him find the tools. Going to neutralize Eye of Avarice before sundown.

Episode 9
Wow. Sherry just found the solution! Now she will go alone to neutralize Eye of Avarice. Flashback reveals her mom was killed before her eyes. Hence her father isn’t related by blood as he took her in as his own as mom was his friend. With the terrorists taking random shots at hostages just for fun, Sherry arrives in time to activate her artefact. The neutralizing has Rose lead the other students to fight back. When the going gets tough, the true Shadow Garden drops in to help. At this point, knight boss just set the entire school on flames and escape! Then he goes to burn all the research books and if you didn’t guess his identity by now, Cid is here to confront and reveal to us it is Sherry’s dad. Yeah, why am I not surprised? So he asks why he is doing this. Apparently he was once a top swordsman but got bored with it. Until he found this Eye of Avarice and was interested. He funded Sherry’s mom to research it but then she suggested it was dangerous and to let the government keep it safe. I guess it’s ludicrous to depend on your government, haha! That’s when he killed her. And foolish Sherry doesn’t know a thing about it. Enough talking, time to fight. Cid easily gets killed off?! Well, time for Shadow’s entry. Even the old fart can tell he is more powerful so what better way than to use the artefact to turn himself into a stronger monster. He is bragging how powerful he has gotten but Shadow just slices him off easily and kills him the same way he did to Sherry’s mom. Even with his loss, he thought Shadow Garden is done for as he has did everything to frame them. The world will be against them. Shadow doesn’t care. If he can do it, so be it. He will take all the blame and sins because they don’t walk the path of righteousness or evil. They walk their own path. As Shadow leaves, Sherry becomes very distraught upon seeing her father dead. In the aftermath, Shadow is now a wanted criminal. Shadow Garden thought they have always stood for justice but it seems this is not how their master sees it. Time to re-evaluate. Sherry talks to Cid one last time. She will be going abroad to study science. After all, there is nothing for her here anymore. Can feel that sadness in her tone :’(. Cid’s like, okay, good for you girl. So not going to be in his harem? Jokes aside, he asks what her goal is and she says it’s a secret. I could swear those eyes screamed it’s to kill Shadow.

Episode 10
With the summer vacation, many students will be going back to their hometowns. Cid receives a letter from Alpha and this means it’s time to head to the sacred city of Lindwurm. A few filler-like distractions like Beta and Epsilon facing off with each other over Shadow. They think bigger boobs will do the trick? Then there is Alexia and Iris visiting Gamma’s shopping paradise. As they are here to get stuffs for Alexia’s trip to Lindwurm, Alexia hints she wants to buy certain clothes. Gamma then shows her line of sexy lingerie and this of course shocks the hell out of Iris. I believe Alexia is trying to confuse her sister by twisting some sort of logic as she tries on the skimpy garment with intention to buy them. Since when did Iris become her mom and object to everything? But since Alexis is so cool and confident (not sure what she’s bragging about either), eventually Iris relents. Previously, Rose found Cid alive and heavily bandaged in the infirmary after the battle. She realized her love for him. Because he gave his life, it is her turn to give her heart. And that is why on this train trip to Lindwurm, Rose is clinging onto Cid like a leech! Yeah, can’t get away from this lover girl. Then they talk about the Goddess’ Trial at Lindwurm which is part of the 3 holy sites in the divine teachings. Yeah, Cid thinks she wants to convert him to this faith! At Lindwurm, Cid notices a book signing ceremony by a famous author. But those bestselling books… Parodies or plagiarism?! OMG. Titles like Ashderella, Little Crimson Riding Hood, Romeo E Julietta and even pop culture like Star It’s A Trap Wars (OMFG!!!!) and Dragon Bowl and even this series that shall not be named! It’s like somebody else got the isekai treatment! Then we find out that author is no other than Beta under the alias Natsume Kafka. Apparently Cid told her his stories for inspiration but never thought she would rip them off blatantly. When it’s his turn to get her sign, she writes the mission details inside via ancient letters. Meanwhile Alpha stumbles upon the dead corpse of Archbishop Drake at the cathedral. Cid meets Epsilon as she updates him about the mission. Something about the target has been eliminated by the cult’s executioner who is now in hiding.

Episode 11
Cid enters the hotspring. Not sure if he doesn’t notice or doesn’t give a f*ck that Alexia is right there! Yes, the latter. Sorry, no cliché moment of she squealing and slapping him. So the cool heads talk about the Goddess’ Trial in which it is a fighting ritual whereby candidates summon ancient warriors to fight. You are deemed worthy if those warriors pop up. Otherwise, you’ve wasted paying a high entry fee for nothing. Cid’s not entering and certainly not Alexia too. She is here to investigate the murder of the archbishop which has not been made public yet. The talk shifts to Cid’s ‘Excalibur’. Alexia mocks it as a worm but Cid proudly shows it off and that it is currently sheathed. You can see the shock on her face when the holy sword is set free! Previously, Alexia went to see the acting archbishop, Jack Nelson but was then told her royal investigation is cancelled and that the church will be handling it. Alexia is not pleased but there is nothing she could do. She could get her father to write an overriding authority letter but that will take days. By that time, the evidence will be all gone and she suspects this baldy to be main culprit. For now, she is to just watch the Goddess’ Trial. Sitting next to her is Gamma. Alexia starts sizing her up as some shady author and must be corrupted inside. Must be those boobs. Gamma too sizes up Alexia and is not pleased how she fake dated Cid since she wanted to play that role so much. This princess must be corrupted inside. With the ritual beginning, many potentials come and go. Only did 1 warrior among the many showed up. Yeah, must be a boring day. Finally, Cid’s name is called to participate! Well, we can thank Rose for that. Oh Cid, weren’t you contemplating on wanting to enter this tournament as a mysterious character? Yeah, staying as a background character is for the best, huh? Now he weighs his options. If he does enter, it will reveal his identity especially if a warrior shows up. If he runs away, his life is over. Definitely his sister won’t forgive him. He’ll go for the third option: He drops in as Shadow to cause confusion. An ancient witch named Aurora shows up. She is known to cause chaos and destruction. For her to respond to Shadow shows Shadow has reached her level. As she mercilessly attacks him, Shadow seems to be on the defence. However he is happy he gets to fight like this. Eventually he puts a quick end to this, shocking many as he easily defeats Aurora and disappears. Then a strange door engulfs the entire place.

Episode 12
Cid thought that by pulling off that Shadow trick, everyone will talk about him and forget about Cid. Then he notes about that door. He ignores it but everywhere he goes, the door follows. Oh well, if it wants him to enter, so be it. While everyone is being evacuated from the arena, Shadow Garden pops up and heads into the door which Nelson reveals leads to the Sanctuary. They also take him along. Before the door closes, Alexia and Rose also leap in. They find themselves inside a huge facility as Alpha narrates the dark true history they’re about to witness. Legend has it that the hero Olivier severed the Demon Lord’s left arm and this is where they sealed it. First truth comes out as Olivier is actually a woman and not a man. And she looks like Alpha. More deductions about the cult’s goal which is more than just reviving the Demon Lord. Hence this Sanctuary locks away all those memories that they are about to witness. Meanwhile Cid enters a room to see Aurora in a strait jacket. Upon her request, he frees her. She notes they have the same goals. He wants to get out, she wants to be free. The only way for that is to destroy the core of the Sanctuary. Once that happens, everything will disappear. Aurora doesn’t mind disappearing into nothingness. Alpha and co begin their tour of the memories. The cult gathered orphaned children here to experiment on them. Many died and only a handful like Olivier survived. The excuse given was to infuse demonic cells into the kids if they were going to fight the Demon Lord. Despite Olivier’s mission was to slay the Demon Lord, it was actually to extract new cells from him. After severing the left arm, some ancient magic was used to seal it and gain its life force contained in the cells. They created very powerful pills but its side effects were too strong and not what the cult wanted. This is the cult’s true objective: Immortality. See that guy over there? Looks a lot like Nelson, right? However the drug AKA Beads of Diablos contains 2 major flaws: It has to be taken at regular intervals or the effects wear off and they can only produce very small amounts every year. 12 to be precise. Does that number correspond with the number in Rounds? Alpha knows Nelson is part of Rounds and has yet to perfect Beads of Diablos. Before Nelson could attack back, Delta kills him off. Oh dear, did she forget she isn’t supposed to do that until he spills everything? Don’t worry, he isn’t dead yet as he revives as a monster. At the same time, Sanctuary’s security activates and separates them.

Episode 13
Even if the Sanctuary takes away their magic and absorbs it into Nelson, Delta is happily cutting away all of Nelson’s clones. Yeah, violent b*tch feels like she’s living for this moment to break everything! Meanwhile Epsilon’s side stumbles into valuable info of the Sanctuary. Start recording them! Cid and Aurora find themselves in the middle of a battlefield filled with dead soldiers. The epicentre is a young Aurora. Aurora borrows Cid’s sword with intent to slice her but looks like they have to deal with zombies! They can go on cutting the zombies but they can’t go on forever. So Cid just cuts the young Aurora to break free of this illusion. Aurora recognizes this as the centre of the Sanctuary. A sword before a door with chains. Have to get through it, right? Cid laments his sword can’t cut through and furthermore, he is not the chosen one who can lift this sword which is the key to cut the chains. Only a direct descendent of the hero can. So they’re going to just sit and wait? Okay. Cid learns Aurora’s wish to be free is not really to disappear into nothingness but to leave this place as it repeats for eternity those memories. Delta is so violent that it returns them back to the Sanctuary. Nelson calls for Olivier for help. With Epsilon getting what is necessary, Alpha orders a retreat. Sorry, no epic fight going to happen. They’ve got what they’ve want so they can come back any other time. Bye. Nelson tries to think of an excuse for this situation when he detects intruders in the centre. Cid and Aurora can finally be happy the main character has arrived! Oh nope. It’s just that baldy. Nelson sends Olivier to kill them. Cid fights her but takes a beating. But he looks happy. Cid can tell Olivier doesn’t have a heart and thus this fight is boring. Aurora doesn’t want Cid to die and will do what she can to help him escape. Nelson offers her to cooperate with him in exchange for Cid’s life. But Cid doesn’t appreciate this since it’s like saying he will lose and that he doesn’t her help. Olivier then stabs through Cid but it’s all part of his plan. Wow. What form is he going to activate now?

Episode 14
Cid grabs hold of Olivier and bites her! OMG! So much blood! Cid isn’t seriously wounded or anything as long as he protects his vital organs. Nelson sends more Olivier clones to fight him but of course Cid is still superior. Since he intends to end all this and not go through all that troublesome procedure of having a hero descendent to use the sword to cut the chains, he’ll just blast everything! The results are the same, right? Because now Cid can use his magic and damn, it’s overflowing! His explanation is if his magic gets absorbed, all he needs to do is turn it into some solid state and that’s why he is covered with slime. The blast is so powerful that even those outside the Sanctuary could see this beautiful light show. Cid is now before Diablos’ arm. It’s obvious, right? Cid finds himself outside with Aurora slowly fading. She thanks him for everything and although she doesn’t mind disappearing, there are some memories she doesn’t want to forget. How does it feel like to kiss a ghost? Meanwhile Alexia curses her own incompetence and that she knew and could do nothing. She promises to form an alliance with Rose and Beta to get more info and recruit allies in their quest to find the truth. With Lindwurm now turned into Venice, Alpha and Epsilon talk about the sacred sword vaporized into thin air as well as Beta joining the princesses to infiltrate their inner circle. Then there is this discovery of Aurora’s other name: Diablos. Gamma sees a real estate guy and buys up all the property for development. Alexia talks to Iris about finding the truth behind all this and that the divine teachings need to be investigated. Something of this large can’t be possibly be kept hidden in public. However Iris already brought this up to father who told her not to do anything so as not to rock the boat. Thus if they are to convince him, they have to find definitive evidence or show proof they have the power to overcome any difficulty. Speaking of which, conveniently the upcoming international tournament, Bushin Festival. If they win it, it will make the people have confidence with them and their father and his council will be forced to listen to what they say. Alexia cautions the cult or Shadow Garden already having a hand in this since they have also done so in every major event. However Iris has seen their artefacts and believes she will not lose to them. Iris is feeling pressured as her closest trusted subjects are now sceptical of her since her newly formed knights had some of her best men killed. Obviously they hate her and she needs to regain their trust again. As Rose practises her sword, she notices a mark growing over her chest.

Episode 15
Bushin Festival is here. Yup, lots of strong looking weirdoes. I’m sure this is not a cosplay event. But sorry, all of you are just minor background characters! Cid sees Gamma and has a request of her. As his goal is to participate in this tournament, he doesn’t want to stand out, he is going to be the underdog and make everyone think he is a powerful dude. Hence he takes on the identity of this really plain guy. Yeah. Mundane Mann. Living up to his name, huh? So Cid assumes this identity because nobody would care about this real life loser, right? With Gamma’s technology, he just looks like the real deal. As he walks through town, Annerose Nichtsehen (the only one who summoned and fought an ancient warrior at Goddess’ Trial) warns him not to participate since he is too weak. Cue for this obnoxious tough guy, Quinton to show up and beat the crap out of Mann. Of course he doesn’t fight back and gets beaten up, claiming his fists aren’t for such low level fights. This is perhaps all part of Cid’s plan to get Annerose be fascinated with him and her reaction certainly looks so. Skel is trying to bet and make it big for this tournament. Yeah, collecting data, no? The favourites are defending champ Iris (winning this will make her the first to defend her title), Rose and Annerose. Later Rose talks to Cid and it sounds like she dreads to go meet her fiancé her father has introduced. Then she talks about sticking to her ideals and a flashback of how she was awed by the scene of somebody (Cid in a paper bag of course) saving her from bandits. To her relief, Cid will continue to believe in her. As the preliminaries begin, we see Skel trying to collect data. Yeah, bugging Cid for funds, huh? Then this obnoxious golden armour hunk tries to give his advice to Skel about data collection. Because that’s how he wins, right? Skel is so freaking fascinated. I bet he is duped. So now it’s Mann’s turn to fight his opponent. Observation shows Mann will lose and not last a second, right? Well, data is all how you interpret it. Mann defeats his opponent so fast that nobody saw what happened! Only Annerose did. A double punch to the chin. TKO. This is part of Cid’s plan to get Annerose have that reaction. Next match will be Mann against golden armour boy. You know who to bet, right? Next morning, Skel is banging on Cid’s door. Heard the news? Rose stabbed her fiancé before running off and is now missing.

Episode 16
Beta and Alexia discuss about Rose who has fled but is still believed to be in the vicinity of the kingdom. Both Midgar and Oriana kingdoms would like to treat this as a personal affair since it will be bad for both relationships. Because Beta hints about not helping Rose (as she didn’t tell them, it is a sign she didn’t want to drag them into her affair), Alexia on the other hand is not happy because they made a pact and so she swears to help her friends in need. For a start, they’ll look into her fiancé whom everyone calls as Perv Asshat (a title that he too gladly accepts!). It seems Beta knows a lot more info on Rose’s whereabouts but chose not to tell Alexia so as to make her stop and think. After Cid watches another match, on his way down, he meets an elf girl named Beatrix. She asks if he has seen an elf girl who resembles her. That elf girl she is looking for is her sister’s daughter. Clearly she looks like Alpha but Cid lies and says no. Beatrix then attacks him as a test. Thanks to his commoner reaction, Beatrix believes he possesses no threat. Now we see Mann against our golden boy. Annerose and Quinton are watching this and they know he is no ordinary fighter as his moves were too fast for them to even make anything of it. Either he relies on some artefact or he has not shown his true power. So when Goldy boy attacks first, once again too fast for everyone to see what happened as Goldy gets injured. From Annerose can make out, he cracked his neck? Then when Goldy unleashes his fiery dragon power, another too fast a move to see that sends Goldy to his defeat. Annerose saw a sneeze? If Mann wins his preliminary group by beating Quinton, Annerose will be her first round opponent in the tournament proper. Yeah, Annerose practising cracking her neck and sneeze?! Meanwhile Iris sees Perv and unlike the exaggerated reports, he is actually fine and healthy. He warns her to do as he says or else. Since this is a family matter, they will handle it their way. Everyone is in shock with yet another victory from Mann. They are confused about his potential as Mann crushes Quinton. Annerose then confronts him and claims she has seen all his moves so it won’t work on her. Then he drops his hand weights. Oh my. Did the floor just break?! Yeah. Fun time’s over. So as not to be cowed, she tries to show off her neck cracking move! DAFAQ?! Not that Mann knows what the f*ck that is anyway. Meanwhile Rose is still on the run and continues to wound guards hot on her tail.

Episode 17
OMG. Can’t Skel just shut up about getting the money from Cid?! Yeah, this time he thinks of hunting down Rose for the reward. Not that Cid cares anyway since Rose being missing is what he wants. Then as he strolls downtown, he hears Beethoven’s Sonata Moonlight. This reminds him of a time his family used to make him play the piano. At first he thought it was a useless thing but soon realized the benefits of doing so because people left him alone. In fact, he thinks this piece should be the anthem of Shadow Garden. But who is playing that piece now? Oh. Just Epsilon. Yeah, the crowd loves it. Later she tells him she has been receiving money for ‘plagiarising’ many of the pieces Cid thought her and has lots of profitable work in Oriana Kingdom. Cid needs to know Rose’s whereabouts. Epsilon isn’t sure and thinks is in the sewers running away. All what Cid needs to know. Alexia and Beta talk about Perv being a puppet of the cult but they have no solid proof and will be branded by heretics if they make the wrong move. Both are heading down the sewers, which is actually a large maze that is connected to the royal palace and was constructed as an escape path. They’re going to find Rose here without any maps or keys whatsoever? Rose continues to run as she remembers what happened. When she went to greet her father the king, she was devastated to see his zombie face. Obviously he along with his other subjects were being controlled by Perv (grinning like an idiot). She got so mad and attacked him. Of course the guards descended upon her and she ran. Now she regrets what she thought was the right thing to do, she was only acting based on her feelings and rage. As the curse is acting up, she even thinks of giving herself up (as Perv suggested) and at least she could avoid a war. Then she hears Moonlight Sonata and follows it. OMG WTF Shadow playing that right in the middle of nowhere?! Too bad he is not here to be praised by you as he asks what her goal is. Because she laments she failed to protect, he wonders if she has given up. He is willing to give her this power if she wants to continue fighting. Of course she does. And this power of his destroys her curse?! His final advice is that it all depends not on power but on who you are. As proof Rose is ready, she kills all those cultists in a single strike! Woah! She really powered up. She makes her way back and stumbles into Alexia and Beta. Alexia wants to know what happened but Rose isn’t saying. Alexia is not happy she has ignored their promise just so as not to get them involved. In that case she will fight and force the answer out of her. Too bad Rose wins. Now if you excuse her, she’ll be on her way to settle things.

Episode 18
Claire trying to strangle Cid to death?! Yeah, he forgot about his promise to come back to their hometown together during the break. And Cid can joke about strangulation?! Claire has been tasked to replace Rose at the tournament. Hence she passes Cid VIP tickets to watch her match. He better. Meanwhile Alexia visits Rose’s dorm but looks like everything has been cleared out although Rose left some documents regarding the Oriana Kingdom’s companies, religious organizations and relationships with various monarchs. As Cid enters the VIP seating, he realizes he will be sitting next to Iris. She knows about him as Claire often talks about him. Iris wants to apologize to him for the Zenon incident. Then they talk about the tournament and the potential fighters. While Annerose catches her eye, she doesn’t have any opinions of Mann since she didn’t watch his matches. Though, her lackeys think he is all just luck and no skill. Cid is happy to hear the reputation he has built. Iris also notes about Beatrix. Although she won’t be participating, looks like she’ll be spectating. Cid takes his leaves and speaking of the devil, bumps into Beatrix. Seen her niece? Nope. Okay. Cid then becomes Mann to face Annerose. Perv comes to sit next to Iris as they talk about Annerose’s potential. Of course the curious one is Mann whom they have never heard of but yet he doesn’t look as weak as he is supposed to be. Iris deduces that Mann has that absolute confidence, the reason why he probably keeps winning. The match begins as Annerose moves in fast to prevent Mann from moving. Even so, Mann is able to dodge and block her attacks. Then she realizes he is still way faster than her. She waits to counterattack but also fails. She loses in a flash. With Mann’s win, Perv wonders if Iris can beat him since he is her opponent in the next round. She believes he is still hiding something but maintains her confidence she can win. She is a bad loser after all. As Iris goes to prepare for her match, Perv has his assistant find more details on Mann. He believes Mann is from the underworld and could be backed by some lawless city. If that’s the case, it would be troublesome and he would like to get rid of it before anything trouble arises. As for Mann being part of Shadow Garden, Perv believes Shadow Garden has no reason to cause a scene here. Annerose admits her defeat to Mann as she vows to get stronger. Why does her eyes say she is longing for him? Iris easily defeats her opponent. No contest. She sees Beatrix watching the crowd and goes to talk to her. Cid is happy things are going his way and plans how to live out the remaining scenario. Only, Claire is waiting at his doorstep wondering if he watched her match. He’s so dead this time.

Episode 19
Since young, Iris has always been praised by many for her exceptional skills. But as she grew older and wanted to use those skills to help the less fortunate, she was told to use it for greater stuffs. And now with the recent events when she confronted her father, only to be told he will not stray from the status quo and oppose the divine teachings. From his view, Iris is desperate to do what is right just to put Midgar in danger. Iris invites Beatrix to watch the match with them so you bet everyone is in awe the war goddess is here. It is proven that Perv has been drugging Rose’s father to control him as his puppet. He believes Rose will return to save him and her curse makes her the prime material for the cult’s experiment. Assuming Rose fails to show up, he is forced to use Oriana’s king to kill the king of Midgar. Oriana will lose and Perv himself will lose everything. Though, everything has been set up to install a puppet king in Midgar. Worse, he found nothing about Mann and is now concerned about Shadow Garden. Perv’s problem is compounded when he learns Beatrix is here because now he needs to find a way to kill her too. Now it is Mann vs Iris. As it starts, Iris gets decapitated???!!! Oh my. Just an illusion? However each time Iris is about to move, she feels a deep cut that a body part has been severed. This confuses the crowd as some fear why she is just staggering back and forth. Is she afraid? When she finally gets close to strike him, Mann just did some simple move to overpower her. Her sword breaks. Did Iris lose? Crowd in shock. Not as shock as Perv. He can take relief that Rose has returned. Father welcomes her back as Rose apologizes for the sins she is about to commit. Catching Perv off guard, father forgives her. She attacks. Perv uses her father as shield. But she stabs through him! Rose is now going to kill herself but here comes Mann. He reveals himself as Shadow. But Rose remembers him as Stylish Bandit Slayer. It was him who made her interested in fencing. Flashback shows Rose was kidnapped by bandits. But Cid happily killed all of them and inadvertently saved her. Rose praises Shadow as never giving up on fighting evil as she was contemplating to take the easy way out. All Shadow says is that her fight isn’t over yet. With that, Rose takes her leave. Perv calls for reinforcements to catch her but looks like all of them are dead. Yup, courtesy from Shadow Garden. But Beatrix will take up Perv’s offer since she wants to fight the strongest. And now the strongest mad people start clashing their swords while Perv escapes.

Episode 20
When Iris saw Shadow revealing himself, she became so pissed! Beatrix is being kept on her toes. Each time, Shadow popping up behind her. Iris joins in as she wields this mighty legendary mythril sword. Shadow laughs at the crutch she is using. Nobody can defeat him on borrowed power, right? Oh Shadow, you really want to piss her off further, huh? So we see the duo fight all across the kingdom. Damn, are they destroying everything?! Meanwhile Rose ponders what she will do as Alpha approaches her and gives her 2 options: Either she fights alone or she fights alongside Shadow Garden. Rose asks how this will benefit her kingdom or it can be saved but Alpha requires it all depends on her and whether she can prove her worth. Rose bites the bullet and goes with her. Iris is willing to sacrifice herself for Beatrix to deal the finishing blow. Didn’t work. Shadow continue to hand their ass to them. When Iris ‘threatens’ all of Midgar will be against him from this point, Shadow laughs like mad. Then he gets mad as he initiates a huge magic barrier. Oh sh*t. All gonna die? Bam! Clouds blown away. It’s sunny and here’s a rainbow to boot. Trolled you all! This is just for show. Shadow escapes. Iris… Oh boy, she’s so pissed and frustrated. In the aftermath, it is reported that Iris and Beatrix chased the demonic Shadow out as he has become a wanted criminal. Rose is also missing. But as Beta puts it, this is what Shadow wants. The kingdom to go after him as distraction so they don’t get involved with the Oriana Kingdom. Perv reports to Mordred about his failure but he assures that Rose will return now that her kingdom is in turmoil after the death of their king. It seems Claire won the Bushin Festival. Is that by default? Anyway, Alpha takes Rose back to Cid’s hometown. Because deep inside some mystical forest, this is where Shadow Garden’s base of operation lies. Damn, Alexandria is like a mini kingdom of its own! Alpha puts Lambda in charge to train Rose who is then stripped of everything. She will not have anything left. Not even the last memento of Cid. Regretting your actions now? From now on, Rose will only be known as #666.

Over(Edge)Lord & Mob Mentality
Well people, I can’t believe it but I guess it means this series is actually popular enough to have a following and that means, wait for it, a second season! So much about leaving this series’ fate to fade in the shadows, huh? With all that development in the end, it is only right that they have another one instead of leaving things as it is. So yeah, for better or worse, we’ll have to wait for the sequel to see what more flashy shenanigans Shadow and his Shadow Garden will do.

Honestly, I have mostly this confused and mixed feelings while watching the entirety of this series. It’s like they want to have everything from action to drama to comedy and perhaps it is all part of the ploy to confuse viewers like me. Because the plot seems like all over the place although it is mostly Cid playing his Shadow character and continuing to flex his muscles AKA dispense his own sense of justice in this other world. I’m not saying that I was bored or dissatisfied but I would at least say that I am not impressed. Like I said, the whole part of this series confused me somewhat so while trying to reconcile those feelings as I watch the episodes, you bet that is the reason why I couldn’t become a hardcore or even a decent casual fan of this series. After all, the series divides itself into small mini arcs of 5 episodes each and that’s why you have this show having a strange number of 20 episodes instead of the usual. Couldn’t they adapt one more arc to make it 25 or do they purposely want to make us wait for the next season? And is it just me that I noticed that at the end of every arc, something huge gets destroyed? Whether it is a big chunk of the city, the school, Lindwurm and Midgar itself, oh boy, as long as Shadow is involved, be warned your city is in danger of being destroyed!

The big source that confuses me is of course Cid himself. As we all know, this guy wants to play justice from the shadows and hence the title of this series AKA Eminence in Shadow. That is all fine and I wouldn’t have no qualms about it even if this will lead me to pigeonhole him as a boring dark character. However the problem that is confusing me a lot is that he wants to do stuffs that background characters do. You see him so earnest and eager in doing those that in a way it makes him stand out. You see where the confusion comes from now? That’s right. So does he want to be the unsung hero or does he want to get some attention? Sorry, it can’t be both worlds. Hence I believe it is the latter. Cid wants some attention. Obviously he is the main character of the series so he gets all the focus. But looking at his intentions, he looks like he wants to be appealing to the mass. Starting off as a nobody or underdog and then impress them with whatever display. You do notice how he revels when the people whisper and gossip about Shadow’s reputation, right? So that only tells me he does want attention. Especially the final episode when the fight was just so freaking flashy and exaggerated, don’t you think Shadow overdid it? So much about staying in the shadows, huh? The irony that Shadow Garden is actually being less flashy than Shadow himself. Oh well, as an overpowered boss, he can do anything he wants. Who is to stop him, huh?!

Sometimes I think I want to compare this series as a discount version of Overlord. In some ways, Cid is a bit like Ains-sama because noticed how Shadow Garden operates on their own and when they report or update him with info, more than often you can hear Cid’s sarcastic inner thoughts that he is very well unclear and has no idea about what they have been doing. And because Cid doesn’t say much or gives vague hints of his next action, as Shadow Garden puts him high on a pedestal, they do not question his ‘wisdom’ and believes he is already many steps ahead of them. Hmm… Doesn’t that feel a lot like a certain skeletal sorcerer? And to think that his Shadow Garden has hot killer babes named after Greek alphabets. Hmm… Doesn’t that feel a lot similar to a certain group of battle maids? Suspicious indeed…

Back to more Cid analysis. If I can call that. As I have pointed out Cid wants some attention, the other part that I think he wants to try to appeal to us viewers that he wants to be this sort of funny guy. As we all have seen how he also mostly does monologues of his own and that is where many of his comeback lines or jokes if I should call it, occur. Heck, this guy sometimes subtly breaks the fourth wall just to bring us his seemingly witty lines. Plus, he acts all so cool and composed since I suppose it would be too weird if he starts having emotional flabbergasting moments. Oh, maybe sometimes he does. Especially when it pertains to stuffs that mob characters do. So which brings the question if Cid is a funny or serious guy? Or is he trying to be both? One moment he could be this badass Shadow dude whose powers and skills are unrivalled. Then the next moment he could quip some deadpan sarcasm while putting off this retard ambiance. Confusing. Sure, there are many other weird moments that felt like supposed it was to be funny like Annerose’s neck cracking copycat and Cid excitingly purposely getting killed as Rose’s body shield. But somehow most felt like cringe than funny. Okay, funny but still cringe in some ways. Still, you can’t hate this guy because of the minimal words he spouts as Shadow. Cool? Provocative? Thought provoking? It’s Shadow being Shadow.

Well, if Cid is confusing and weird, I guess then I would have to say that the most disappointing characters would be his Shadow Garden babes. As far as we have seen this season, we have not seen a lot of fleshing out of these characters. Just snippets and very brief moments how Cid picked them up into his fold. So it’s like they’re a mysterious bunch of killer chicks who remain loyal to Cid only because he saved them and gave them a chance. Thus we don’t know too much about them and what we know are just their weird quirks like Epsilon and her fake bouncy boobs and Gamma being clumsy. I believe there is one being Eta who makes very minimal appearance because she’s like the scientist of the group or something. Not too sure, though. And I’m not sure if Cid regrets it because he taught Shadow Garden in their early days about stuffs from his previous life, then they make it big in this world improvising it and well, Cid is not impressed although he doesn’t complain further. Not sure if this is all part of the plan because it’s not like it is bogging Cid/Shadow down, right?

As for the other characters, just pretty okay in my books. Many of the female girls here feel like potential to become part of Cid’s harem because indirectly they are fascinated by him even though it may not be his intention. Like Alexia who was used as a plot device and damsel in distress, hence her initial weird pseudo dating with Cid only to backfire in the end when would you agree with me that she actually had fallen for him? Now she’s like playing a little detective on her own because she’s trying to uncover whatever shadowy organizations that lurk beneath her kingdom. She’s not making any impact yet since she is powerless in many context. Politics, gender and even age. If Iris has a hard time changing things, you think she could? After all, Iris shoulders more burden as she is the next in line for the throne. Her fight with Shadow in the end I hope did not break her although I could see traces of it. It saddens me since she tried so hard to make what is right but only to have reality slap her in the face. Or rather, kicked her in the guts. So it’s a tragedy to see her on the edge of becoming broken. I fear her becoming insane and then gasp! Turn into a villainess! So much anger, so much pain. What good did it do her? It only also served to prove how powerless she is. Sad. Then there is Rose who became this season’s final plot device because we can’t have her being just bimbo fawning over Cid, right? Got to make her into a stronger woman so that she will be worthy of Cid! And that’s why she’s undergoing training in Shadow Garden. Next time on Rose’s follow up story: Training arc! Heh.

Unfortunately for you Cid, there are more backgrounds characters who are more background character than you! I’m saying that Claire falls into that since from the perspective of us viewers, she is negligible although in the eyes of the house of Kagenou, she is the main star. I believe Cid is more powerful than her and he is only submissive to her so as not to cause trouble. I mean, one less character in the equation saves a lot of mess, right? Maybe she’ll play a more significant role next season. It couldn’t get any more background character than Cid’s buddies, Skel and Po. Yeah, your typical comic relief and joker characters because they do no jack sh*t whatsoever. The perfect background characters that Cid would love to be but only can’t because he is already main character.

If I have to point to most pitiful and saddest character, it would be Sherry. You still remember this girl? I thought she would fall into that typical pitfall and become part of Cid’s unofficial harem but looks like she’s gone. At least for this season. My guts ring hard that she will be back for vengeance next time and it was a very sad state to see how her character ended up once her story arc was over. Yeah. Sad indeed :’(. I hope the next time she returns, she’ll get the justice she needs. Like, give Shadow a run for his money. And not become part of his harem! No, Cid/Shadow already has got enough girls for that! Heck, many girls that got involved with him ended up in some sort of tragedy. Iris broken, Sherry broken, Rose going to be broken, Annerose defeated, Beatrix defeated (didn’t even complete her goal of finding her niece) and Alexia remains, uhm, useless. All part of your plan, Shadow? Definitely I believe Sherry will back next season. Short scene in final episode as a reminder of that possibility. Don’t count her out yet.

Action wise, I can’t say I am impressed either. Because we all already know that Cid/Shadow is just freaking overpowered and he can even do it in style and posing. Ugh. Chuunibyou. So they try to wow us with all the flashy and exaggerated moves that probably happen so fast that the naked eye can’t catch. But yeah, otherwise it would be just boring as f*ck as nobody else in this world is as good as Shadow and his Shadow Garden. Yeah, they literally wipe the floor with all those low level cult members. No challenge. So once in a while you get a pretty strong character like Aurora and Beatrix that Shadow could fight on par with but as the script says, we all know how it will turn out. The biggest slap is when Cid/Shadow impersonates as Mann in the tournament and he just bulldozed through without even breaking into a f*cking sweat! So overpowered that he didn’t even bother to move. Doesn’t that only raise suspicions and attract attention? We must be so disappointed. And green with envy. How nice it must be to get the isekai main character treatment. So untouchable. But be warned, there is quite an amount of blood and gore like limbs being cut off and blood bleeding out enough to form a mini puddle.

Art and animation are rather okay. No complaints from my side except that perhaps there are too many scenes that are quite dark. After all, we’re dealing with shadowy groups and people and thus some scenes that are just, well, in the shadows. And when you have Shadow Garden’s uniform all dark and black to blend in the background, it just adds to that effect. Also, some characters look close enough that it confused me at first like Alexia and Epsilon. I swear that identical hairstyle confused the hell out of me even if their hair colour was different. Even Delta and Zeta since both are beast women with animal ears despite their different fur colour. And red head female leads like Iris, why do they always have similar looks and personalities like Rias from High School DxD, Lisara from Dakara Boku Wa Ecchi Ga Dekinai and Lilith from Trinity Seven? This anime is done by Nexus who did Darwin’s Game, Comic Girls and Rakudai Kishi No Cavalry.

Voice acting is okay and surprisingly I didn’t expect to recognize quite a number of seiyuus. From main supporting characters like Kana Hanazawa as Alexia, Youko Hikasa as Alpha, Sho Hayami as Perv, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Skel and Takehito Koyasu as Mordred, to minor characters or cameo appearances like Yui Horie as Akane, Houchu Ohtsuka as Sherry’s father, Mai Nakahara as Cid’s mom and Nobuhiko Okamoto as Rex. Some I couldn’t like Rina Hidaka as Claire because she’s not in loli mode, Mikako Komatsu as Beatrix because she’s sounding quite subdued. Yeah. Other casts are Seiichirou Yamahshita as Cid/Shadow (Kakeru in Orange), Haruka Shiraishi as Rose (Asirpa in Golden Kamuy), Asami Seto as Alpha (Chihaya in Chihayafuru), Inori Minase as Beta (Hestia in DanMachi), Suzuko Mimori as Gamma (Nanami in Kamisama Hajimemashita), Ai Fairouz as Delta (Takechiyo in Hanyou No Yashahime), Hisako Kanemoto as Epsilon (titular character in Shinryaku! Ika Musume), Shion Wakayama as Annerose (Takina in Lycoris Recoil), Maaya Uchida as Nu (Rikka in Chuunibyou Demo Koi Ga Shitai), Saya Aizawa as Sherry (Kisara in Engage Kiss), Kaori Nazuka as Aurora (Nunnally in Code Geass), Masaya Matsukaze as Zenon (Ren in Jigoku Shoujo) and Mugihito as Nelson (Wombat in Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love).

The opening theme is Highest by OxT. Yes, the same band who sang the great rock openings for the Overlord series. Sometimes you can feel traces of their trademark in their other songs here (especially the chorus part) but I guess I’m just spouting nonsense because that’s how their songs sound like, right? But I don’t know, the opening lines just sound a bit gay too me. As for the ending theme, despite Darling In The Night is the only song, there are 7 different versions since each member of Shadow Garden will have their go at singing this rock outfit. On a trivial note, the ending credits animation is just boring. Still pictures of a Shadow Garden member (whoever is singing this version will be shown) unlike the opening credits that is just filled with lots of explosion, exaggeration and edgy drama. Yeah.

Overall, this series is strangely confusing and although I am not that impressed with it, I have to admit that it is still interesting enough to make me decide to check out next season for more Cid/Shadow shenanigans and bloody Shadow Garden gore. It does have some story and political intrigue but we’ll have to wait for next season and see. Even though this series is your typical isekai genre that has been permeating the industry in recent years. Do I have to admit I am a fan of such genres to keep coming back to watch them season in and season out? Well yeah, better Cid be the main character and hog all the spotlight while I enjoy being an armchair critic, happily watching all the animes I want as a background character. Can’t complain to that, can I?
