Tensei Kenja No Isekai Life

15 January, 2023

Now imagine this. What if Rimuru reincarnated in another world but instead of becoming the most powerful slime, he reincarnated as a powerful tamer who controls slimes? Well, yeah. That was my first thoughts about Tensei Kenja No Isekai Life (f*ck its freaking long ass second title of being a second character class and being the strongest sage). Yes people, it is another blatant generic isekai genre of the season. They didn’t even try to hide it in the title nor in its synopsis. So you expect the usual stuffs in here. Yup, main character died in his real life (from overworking in a black company, what else?), gets reincarnated to a fantasy world where he becomes overpowered as f*ck. Becomes the hero as he fights bigger, stronger and even more dangerous monsters. And yeah, perhaps becoming the hero who will fulfil some prophecy and save the world. Don’t worry, he won’t do it all alone. He’s got slimes as his familiars! Yeah. Slimes!

Episode 1
Gale tells his fellow adventurers about a slime breathing fire. They don’t believe him as it could never happen. Meanwhile Yuichi Sano brings back loads of special flowers to the guild. Lily had to call her boss, Aegis about this. Don’t worry, they’ll buy it all from him. Just then, monsters are reported sighted outside town. Yuji’s slimes report that they are heading towards this town. Because they number in tenths of thousands, Aegis wants the adventurers to flee. And abandon the people?! Better to save the adventurers?! But of course, Yuji knows a way to save everybody. He has this dragon bone that can recreate a dragon’s fire breathe to burn everything. He needs time to prepare. Gale believes in him as the adventurers set out to hold the fort from the monster vanguard. At the same time, Yuji receives report from Dryad of a suspicious man with a magic stone lurking in the forest. Yuji has his slimes tackle and capture him and neutralize the stone. However the man kills himself shortly. Once the preparations are done, everyone retreats back into the town walls. Yuji then creates a huge barrier to protect the town from the hellfire that rains and burns the monsters. Sad that the forest had to be sacrificed… Unfortunately there are some monsters left. Yuji is already weakened. His MP is negative but needs to spend some HP to cover it. Going to be a bit pain but he can tough it out. As we all know, he isn’t an ordinary tamer because anyone doing this would be suicidal. Yuji does a second round of hellfire that eventually burns everything clean but soon collapses after that. When he wakes up, Lily is taking care of him and telling him everyone is having a big celebration outside and talking about Yuji as their hero. Yeah, I guess being a tamer is much better than his previous stressful programming job, eh? Aegis finds something unsettling next to the corpse of the culprit. As Yuji isn’t one to join in the party, he and his slimes leave the town. No goodbyes? To the next town then. Aegis notices the symbol of an item the dead culprit and notes it is from that cult.

Episode 2
In the next town, Yuji tries to join a guild but it seems they accept him not because he is a tamer but rather he has this ability to track enemies. He then joins a party made of Rodis, Tina and Lisa. Rodis isn’t too happy that Yuji can’t fight since he’ll be an excess baggage. But the ladies threaten to kick him out. So if Yuji joins, he gets to stay. Their quest takes them to find an earth dragon’s hiding. Yuji’s tracking allows Rodis to take out the monster enemies beforehand. That night as they camp, Yuji dreams when he first came to this world. Too much overtime in his company? Then he tamed a slime next to him. It then led him to a house with loads of books. Reading some books, he then tamed the whole bunch of slimes there. Yuji wakes up after hearing reports from his slimes and Proud Wolf that Rodis is gone. So are the girls. They follow shady Rodis meeting Heihachi Gelios (some infamous bandit) and that bastard intends to sell his comrades to him. He also knows the girls have tailed him and once they trip on the traps, he’ll know they’re here. Gelios then spouts about some calamity prophecy. Something about the moon turning blue. When the girls are caught and think they have to fight, Proud Wolf and the slimes disguise themselves as monsters to scare off the bandits. With Yuji initiating some frost spell, the entire hideout is frozen. So everybody froze to death? Yuji is even kind enough to have the slimes put up a proper camping tent to rest before they return to town. Yuji can’t help think about that calamity thingy.

Episode 3
Yuji remembers when he joined the adventurer’s guild, the newbies were given some aptitude test. Safe to say, Yuji was too strong in all of his abilities, shocking the instructor. So now he tries to tone down his magic by using weaker ones. When the sky suddenly turns dark and ominous, something drops down. Turns out to be a huge powerful dragon. Tina suggests to take shelter in the canyon because of the wind that keeps powerful monsters away. However they encounter that earth dragon hiding underground. Well, no wind underground. Yuji puts his spells to the test and eventually fries it with his hellfire. When they return to the guild and submit proof of the earth dragon’s skull, they get rewarded and even more so for stopping Gelios. Yuji is then roped in for an important meeting since he is the only one who has seen this blue dragon dropping out from the sky. He uses his magic to visualize it and let others see its form. Father Steyl then tells everyone about this dragon from the book of legends. In short, it will destroy this world in 3 days. However the only thing that can stop it is a divine emissary whose powers can rival the gods. Why does this sound like it is going to be Yuji? Can’t blame everyone to think there is no such divine emissary in this day of age. It is believed this dragon could have descended from a church ritual to ward off a spirit a week ago. They are not sure of its results but it could be they summoned the dragon instead. The sky turns dark again before reverting back and as Yuji reports, the dragon has grown bigger. It is decided for everyone to go slay the dragon at first light tomorrow. Later Steyl sees Yuji to give him a Dagger of Kethis. The church has not find any purpose for it but looks like Steyl deems the gods have deemed him the rightful owner. This just sounds so fishy… That night Yuji thinks about tomorrow’s battle and he better not be holding back or using weaker magic! Lots of lives on the line, you know!

Episode 4
As expected, Yuji faces off with the dragon. Hellfire not working so better use the dagger and infuse it with hellfire. Of course as you can see this is all for dramatic effect. Yuji thinks he has won but not yet. The dragon gets back up but he tries harder and another method. Eventually the script says the dragon must lose so Yuji decapitates its head with his hellfire infused dagger. So easy. The world is saved! The mind boggling part is how the next day everybody is acting so normal about it. Oh, no dragon to fight? Whatever. Like as though that threat was never meant to be! Because nobody partying like mad to even celebrate the threat is over. So nobody knows the true hero, huh? Weird. After Yuji leaves town, Dryad has an emergency. Seems the place where Yuji defeated the dragon is sprouting special mushrooms. She needs his help to collect them to make special potions. But it is too potent, she needs some clear water. Folks, behold as Yuji introduces distilled water! While waiting for the process, we get a glimpse of how Yuji met Dryad. He found her cursed and almost dying and of course he broke that spell. Simple. Dryad then explains about the dragon’s grace. It is neither good nor evil but if used wrongly, can decimate the entire forest. As Yuji makes his journey to the next village of Ricaardo, the thick fog has him lost his way. In this creepy gloomy village where all the villagers are smiling at him, the chief invites him to stay. He won’t. How about a meal? Not hungry. After learning he got lost, he allows Yuji to leave. Little does Yuji know, the chief then makes contact with a shady guy and ensures Yuji is no threat. They will carry out tomorrow’s plan of extracting dragon’s grace from the canyon. Yuji finally reaches Ricaardo. Uhm, is it normal for it to be snowing?

Episode 5
Entering the famed restaurant, it seems the place is closed for today. And tomorrow too. With the cold, the firewood will be used to keep warm instead of cooking. Since Yuji won’t give up, he goes out to chop some wood. With his slimes, you bet he can chop as many as he wants. If the chef is being picky with the humidity of the firewood, Yuji can always tell his slimes to do some absorption on it. Easy. The chef starts cooking and Yuji gets to enjoy what is basically steak and veggies. Yeah, all worth it. However, using up all the wood for cooking won’t be good as the entire town needs lots of them to stay warm. Hence Yuji goes to the guild and takes up quests to chop wood. So you think they have strict guidelines and standards on the wood. But don’t worry, Yuji shocks everyone with his efficiency and precision. Yeah, don’t need you guys to chop wood. Not only that, he cuts so much and is enough to keep the town warm for a few days. Somebody tell Yuji about deforestation, please?! Now that the job is done, Yuji can return to eating. The chef whips up more delicious food for him. Oh damn, Yuji experiencing some psychedelic LSD or something?! Is this series going to be a food show, the way Yuji narrates his food! Since this isn’t the chef’s best cooking, he claims he needs to use certain herbs only grown in certain places. But monsters have been eating them up lately. Well, time for Yuji to get down to business. As the slimes look for the monsters, they stumble into a strange orb instead. Yuji thinks it is dragon’s grace and it might turn into cursed magic stones. Even Dryad believes this stone is absorbing magic in this area. Yuji then discovers 108 of these babies all perfectly lined up in a circle. Something must be in the centre. Oh no, Yuji going to burn the whole forest down just for that? More deforestation! What does Dryad have to say? Okay, go ahead. The forest can regrow again but if something is cursed, who knows what effect it will do to the ecosystem. After causing a huge crater, they discover a secret door. Care to go for a little adventure? You bet because good food is on the line for Yuji. Is it me or does Yuji have irritating sparkles in his eyes for this episode? Sorry, don’t find it cute.

Episode 6
Yuji and his slimes investigate the secret underground path. Apparently this leads them to some doomsday machine. They see a couple of guys panicking that the machine is acting up and need to go tell their leader, Javier. The slimes follow them and they come up in that creepy gloomy town before Ricaardo. It seems Javier and his men realize somebody is tampering with their magic stones and that they need all 108 to start the ritual. Hence they are going all out to kill anyone who gets in their way since witnesses are not needed. Yuji has the slimes continue to investigate. A room filled with valuable texts and treasures! Gobble them all up, please! Some slimes also take out the henchmen so when Javier and the remaining survivors get suspicious of this, they’re going to get extreme in hastening their plan to cleanse the world. This means they kill themselves so their blood activates the doomsday machine. Yuji has his slimes fly out of the place while he seals the town in a barrier to contain the explosive explosion. Even though Yuji has gone into deep negative territory of MP, he continues to hold up and not give up. Eventually the explosion is gone. He returns to Ricaardo and the villagers wonder if it was a comet. Either way, they are glad it happened since the snow now starts to melt. Yuji is the guest of honour as he tastes the best dish our old chef whips up for him. Definitely worth all the overpowered cliché. Later as he goes over the texts, he notices some magic spell is causing its words to disappear. Only this text is left. Sorry, can’t read these strange lines so not sure who the f*ck Yuji recognizes at the end of the list. He thinks they are the names of the cult’s targeted people. But that will soon be put to rest as a couple of crazy killers too have a similar text. That name reads Yuji!

Episode 7
The crazy killers are watching Yuji who is on his way to Boginia since he heard there is someone who can make armours for monsters. As the duo continue to watch him, they ponder about continuing to observe him or kill him right away since he is on the list of prospective targets. Of course Yuji knows they are tailing him thanks to his slimes so he is not making any sudden moves. In Boginia, they see him being chased away by shops since he has not enough money and even being clumsy bumping into other people. Of course this is all a ploy to make the assassins think he isn’t a powerful guy as they think. Though, they are not entirely convinced and will continue to observe. This has Yuji take up a request to take down some monster bulls. But how can he fight without fighting? Well, as a tamer, it’s up to Proud Wolf to do the job! That’s right. Your turn to take the monsters down. Proud Wolf panics but accidentally kills one of them. He then remembers he used to be strong. Flashback shows how they first met. Proud Wolf ambushing Yuji but was easily caught. Then he begged for his life and pleaded not to be killed. He agreed to be tamed by Yuji. Yeah. That was how strong he was. Because Proud Wolf can still manage this on his own, Yuji has to heal the monsters and make them rampage again just to show they are weak. This process goes on for a while. Just when a dead bull charges at Yuji, he instinctively summons his sword and strikes it down. Oh dear. Cover blown. What to do now? He acts confused. Even the crazy duo are confused on what they see. Is he that powerful of a person? Then they conclude he is just an ordinary tamer and not a threat. Phew. However his slime reports their next target is Steyl. So now it’s Yuji’s turn to monitor them as they report to their boss that Yuji is no threat. They are then told of another threat that Messias has fallen and the perpetrator could be the one pulling the strings. They are told to determine if the target is the threat. You mean the whole thing being burnt down was not enough as a threat?! So as they are determined to go kill Steyl, Yuji realizes they’ll be too dangerous to be left alone and uses his spell to freeze them. He then ponders why the Blue Moon of Salvation is out for him when he is one of their leaders. Yuji returns to Boginia to see Geigel who can make the armour. He views the slimes to be too powerful and doesn’t have that kind of armour. He can make a new one but he’ll need some raw materials. That’s right. Yuji have to venture into some volcano and fight some dragon, right?

Episode 8
Geigel further explains about the jewel from lesser fire dragons that could help make his desired armour. They are crawling all over the volcano and it will be hard to defeat them. You don’t know who you’re talking to, eh? Plus, there is this rare blue lesser fire dragon that yields a more powerful jewel and that means a more powerful armour. Yuji returns to the guild and will take up all the quests to exterminate the lesser fire dragons. He is shocked to learn that their weakness is normal water but nobody defeats them because who the heck is going to haul up water all the way up the volcano? What about using water magic? Don’t be silly! Nobody has that kind of magic! Yeah, you don’t know who you’re talking to, right? Also, there’s a river to cross to get to the volcano that a man eating piranha dwells. Along the way, Yuji tames several red slimes. Then at the river, the slimes detect nothing and since they can’t swim, Yuji infuse them with some waterproof magic as they go under to investigate. Well, there’s that piranha hiding and now it wants to eat! Yuji fishes it out and freezes it. Easy! When they arrive at the volcano, the slimes are starting to get scared because they have some sort of fear of lesser fire dragons. Then Yuji just sprays a few litres of water on one of them and it really dies! So easy! Now the slimes have their confidence back as they go spray water on other lesser fire dragons. Then they encounter the blue lesser fire dragon (uhm, isn’t it purple + pink?) and of course this one will take more than just water spraying. Even if freezing doesn’t help, all Yuji need is to increase the freeze’s intensity and voila! We got its jewels, boys! Then they have time to go defeat the rest of the other lesser fire dragons. So you bet the guild receptionist is shocked he completed all his quests. Geigel even shocker to see Yuji return with loads of jewels. He crafts the armour for his slimes and Proud Wolf. Now they can move faster and have endurance. Later Geigel hints he can make an even stronger armour but it will need materials from a fire dragon. Oh, you’ve seen how powerful Yuji is so why get cautious about nobody has ever defeated it? You see, the fire dragon just peeks its head out of the volcano and that’s it. Yeah. That’s it. Later as Yuji ponders about this, he receives news that the lesser fire dragons are acting strange. He sends his familiars to investigate. Then there’s the fire dragon popping out. WTF this Godzilla clone…

Episode 9
A couple of shady bandits are spotted walking up the volcano. It seems their target is the fire dragon. Yuji tries to secretly capture them but they are high on their guard as they evade his magic nets. Eventually they get caught and seeing they believe Yuji is behind this (although they are surprised his name was taken off the list), they kill themselves. Yuji believes they are from the Blue Moon of Salvation. Inspecting the barrels they are carrying, it seems it contains poison water. Not enough to kill the fire dragon but enough to agitate it. After purifying it, it starts raining. The townspeople quickly evacuate because legend has it that raining + fire dragon = flattened town. As the fire dragon makes its way across the river, it is so hot that the river completely evaporates and all the fish dead! Yuji tries some frozen spell. Didn’t work. Next, he releases a gush of water he has been holding like a dam. Didn’t work either. Yeah, it’s going to take a lot more water than that. So is third time the charm? Because now he uses his ultimate freezing spell in this fire vs ice showdown. Eventually cold beats heat as the fire dragon freezes up and shatters. Aside its jewel, the slimes also spot a weird machine. After Yuji takes the jewel for Geigel to craft an armour, he goes to ask the guild about the town of Ordarion (as heard from the bandits). He learns it is not favoured by many adventurers as the town doesn’t like outsiders. As for this machine, it is a rain making machine that almost every town has during drought seasons. Funny, the guild or town that the machine belongs to is nowhere to be seen on it. This only has Yuji wonder if somebody set this up. After Yuji gets his armour from Geigel, he takes his leave, still refusing to tell his name since he is keeping a low profile.

Episode 10
Arriving in Ordarion, Yuji goes through the list of jobs in the guild but in the end chooses nothing. He leaves but not before he notices a couple of strange men watching him. Of course they head to the back to talk and Yuji knows everything as he is listening via his spying slime. So these guys are from Blue Moon of Salvation too and know about Yuji on the list but was taken off recently. One of them thinks of just killing him to save the trouble but the other doesn’t want him to do rash things that will put all their years of hard work for nought. This includes the artificial rain machine they created. If anything, they have to consult their master, Walter. Surprisingly Steyl is here to talk to Yuji after receiving some divine revelation. This is to reveal about Walter whom he knows. Long ago, Steyl was an unruly adventurer and formed a small organization called Church of Blue Moon to honour their fallen comrades. But they soon attracted followers and one of them was Walter. However he had extremist views and he was popular among some followers. When his ambition grew, he saw Steyl as a threat and wanted to take him out. His followers tried to kill him but Steyl’s faithful followers let him escape and all got killed. Walter soon took over the church in what we now know as Blue Moon of Salvation whose cause is cleansing this world. Steyl came here to warn Yuji about this since it is in the prophecy. Yeah, sounds like it is very open for wide interpretation. Even so, Yuji is a tamer and not an emissary. Well, those who hold the dagger is the emissary. Dang. Now I see why. Later Steyl’s assistant, Johan wonders why he didn’t tell Yuji the rest of the prophecy. It is to protect him because if he had done so, he might turn his back on the faith. Walter receives report of Yuji and makes his preparations. From his revelation, looks like he predicts Steyl’s death. Next morning, Yuji needs to ask Steyl something but looks like he has left. Indeed. He has gone to Walter’s secret underground temple hideout to confront him. It might sound like a suicide mission but he is okay with that. He won’t make the mistake of running away again. Yuji and his slimes track down Steyl. They are shocked to see trail of unconscious cult members. Yeah, Steyl has some good kung fu despite those goons brandishing weapons! Steyl is captured as he is surprised Walter has mastered magic. Well, Johann is the traitor as he is the one who knocks him out. Walter then talks about Yuji put a damper to their plans ever since he arrived. Not sure how this makes their operation go to the next level. So to say Yuji didn’t hinder their plans! Walter turns all his men into zombies. Before he can kill Steyl, Yuji breaks in. Is it a good time to ask a question? Oh Yuji, trying to be funny, huh?

Episode 11
Walter lets his zombies deal with them while he and Johann retreat to his chamber. Walter activates a device that will make him stronger. Just in time because Yuji just finished kicking those easy zombies’ ass. Walter turns into a monster and subsequently a dragon. Yup, powered up by the dragon’s grace. We can tell the outcome but of course some drama and fighting to get our money’s worth. Heck, Walter even doing some discount Gomu-Gomu No Gatling Gun on Yuji’s barrier! Eventually Walter is defeated but he is not panicking. In fact he claims his God to take his and all the followers’ life to make the revelation come true. When that happens, who this rejected Marvel villain? Oh, he’s called Sage? Oh Steyl, you pick a fine time to tell Yuji the rest of the revelation, huh? Because it seems he misinterpreted the whole thing. He thought his own death would made Yuji the sage who will save the world but it turned out that death is Walter’s. And legend has it that a sage fought a dragon but lost. Hence Walter could be doing this to revive that sage. Since Sage isn’t God, I guess Yuji has the green light to defeat him. But wait. Sage pulls off a devastating hellfire move that devastates the place! Yuji never thought he would have to face someone with such magic (is that magic exclusive only to him?) so he and his slimes go all out to fight Sage. However as gallant and pulling out all the stops, Sage remains unharmed and continues to fire back even more powerful hellfire moves. Yuji deduces his MP is infinite. Oh well, Yuji’s is draining rapidly with his rapid succession use of hellfire. Yeah, this fight may end the world instead! But Sage feels it is time to bring salvation to the world. Activating the rain machine all around the continent, looks like the sky is turning ominous. Definitely not looking good.

Episode 12
The monsters all over are getting more aggressive. Oh dear. Can Yuji fight Sage and protect everybody? To show that those towns he saved aren’t useless, everybody revs up to protect their town. Because if Yuji can do it, they can too! I hope they remember they aren’t as overpowered as Yuji… Yeah, with his slimes everywhere to send assuring visuals that these towns can take care of themselves, Yuji can now focus on Sage. Yup, Yuji remembers he never asked anyone for help and it became the norm for him to work alone. Sometimes working as a team isn’t so bad. But still, he needs to help everyone so I don’t know how he helps boost everyone to be faster and more powerful. Sure it won’t drain his magic or something? And what’s this? Dryad has made a potion that can restore his mana back to where it was 10 minutes ago? So if I take 2, will it reverse time to 20 minutes? And so forth?! I love this f*cking loophole! Sage asks why Yuji wants to save this place. Nothing in particular. Sage once had those same sentiments but after being defeated, he has lingering regrets and his goal of destroying the world is to break this cursed cycle of the next round having stronger monsters. WTF I don’t even… Anyway, Yuji thinks this world is okay as it is. So don’t go breaking things that aren’t broken.

With Sage trying to wear him down, Yuji needs to do something more. Steyl receives a new divine revelation to defeat Sage: The sun and moon must be aligned with the sky. Holy sh*t! What kind of plot convenience is this?! I bet God Yuji can do it! Yuji spots some dragon skill and repeatedly strikes Sage down. OMFG. Is this a joke? Although he has taken some damage, Yuji needs to go in for the kill so this is where the dagger comes in. So the sun (in the backdrop) and moon (which is the dagger) aligning is when Yuji dropping down from the sky to do some barrier that locks Sage in and then stabbing him with it? Well, whatever. It did the job. Big explosion. Everything returns to normal. The world is saved! Must be easy to interpret the divine revelation when you look back at things now in retrospect, huh? Yuji leaves for another solo adventure. His slimes tell all the towns are celebrating and partying like there’s no tomorrow. Yeah, all thanks to Yuji’s help, right? But members of Blue Moon of Salvation are seen taking their next step. What’s this Purifier that will decimate the world going to be ready soon? And some black dragon they must defeat? Why didn’t they do this from the start? Oh well, always have a backup plan. Of course Yuji hears all this but he has to deal with some monster tigers first. After killing them and sending them to the guild to claim his reward, the receptionist notes about all his party members will get the reward too. When Yuji says he works alone, she thinks his comrades all died in battle and he is in denial! She lets her superior appraise the monster and after she learns Yuji is a tamer, now everyone realizes he is that super famous tamer who defeated dragons and saved towns! It’s Yuji! Oh my. So much for keeping a low profile.

That Time I Reincarnated As A Slime Master
Oh wow. Imagine being able to save the world all by yourself. Who needs assistants and comrades when you are so overpowered and can just literally do anything. So I bet whatever backup plans the Blue Moon of Salvation has, even if it is more powerful than its predecessor, I’m sure Yuji can easily take care of them. At this rate, he is already God! Yeah, the real problem is when the people start to worship him as one. The only thing Yuji can’t handle is socializing and mixing with crowds of humans, eh? Yup. As a fellow introvert, I understand how he feels. Hence his biggest challenge yet isn’t to defeat powerful dragons or those stubborn Blue Moon of Salvation suicide lovers, but to get away from the crowd! Oh boy, being popular is tough, isn’t it? Isn’t there a spell to erase everyone’s memories?

There is no solid story the way I see how this season went. Basically this season divides itself into several mini arcs as we see Yuji in random adventures as he enters a new town and unwittingly helps out the townspeople, inadvertently intervening and putting an end to whatever nefarious schemes some baddies planned to. Sure, it is all part of a bigger plot because of the Blue Moon of Salvation’s goal to bring salvation, sorry, destroy the world. That is basically the underlying plot of the entire series that I can see for now but otherwise, Yuji being a wandering adventure, going from town to town and getting into his own mini adventures, that is how I see what this series is mainly about. In other words, BORING!

I believe they want to make this series as an action genre because common sense tells us if you have an overpowered character who already has all the powerful spells and possibly the full set of magic arsenal from the get-go, it will be a waste not to showcase that. At first it seemed like something fascinating that Yuji transfers his spells to his slimes to attack. But that novelty soon wears off very fast because that’s all he can basically do. Uh huh. It doesn’t matter what kind of spells he transfers, it all pretty much has the same results. I think that’s primarily why the slimes are needed in the first place. Uh huh. You wonder why Yuji can’t do the spells himself and for whatever reasons I am not interested in, this is why the slimes play an ‘important’ role.

Anyway, the action scenes feel mediocre and just passable. Not very exciting because we’ve already come to expect Yuji as an overpowered character who can do everything and thus cannot be defeated. This means whenever Yuji is faced with some beast that is way stronger than he is and even the legend puts it as undefeatable, blah, blah, blah, there is no way in hell Yuji will lose. Am I right? I mean, this guy took on the most powerful legendary beasts whom locals are afraid of (probably nobody is as overpowered as f*ck like Yuji so can’t blame them for being scared or do nothing) so what is there for him that he cannot defeat? That is why Walter and Sage’s battle was so boring and predictable. Yuji fought and defeated dragons so you think mere humans can stop this guy? Sure, humans are the worst kind of creatures but in terms of physical strength, for Yuji to defeat dragons, well, not even God and Satan cooperating can bring him down! Hell yeah! And of course, to get our money’s worth, they can’t let the fight end so fast so they have to add a little bit of drama and show he is somewhat struggling but at the end of the day, Yuji always prevails. Always. Don’t stray from the script.

There are probably a bunch of stuffs which I don’t understand especially the workings of this world. Either they didn’t explain that or I wasn’t paying attention. Most like the former. I said THE FORMER, okay?! Anyway, one of them includes how it boggles my mind how Yuji can have negative MP and he can still be alive. And it’s not by a few hundred points but a few hundred thousand! Yeah, he has infinite MP if you ask me. I think he explained it but I still can’t wrap my head around it. Not sure what loophole allows him to continue breathing but hey, I guess that is one of the perks of being an overpowered main character. He wouldn’t be so if he can’t have such privilege, right? I am thinking this is for dramatic effect just to put us on the edge of our seats as we wonder if Yuji is going to make it out alive. Well, we veterans know better. This is one of the main factors why when watching Yuji fight stronger opponents, I am not worried about Yuji dying. Who knows? Some loophole may allow him to have negative HP too! And that’s why his final fight with Sage feels boring because when you consider Sage vs God, it is obvious who will win, right?

Yuji as the main character, what else can I say about him? He is so typical and cliché as an isekai main character, there is literally nothing else to say. Okay, okay. So just let me comment about it. He is just boring. That enough? We only see glimpse and short clips of his previous life and I suppose they don’t want to bore us with such details. Because of that, he tries to keep a low profile in this world as he is also a taciturn character. I guess I can accept that because it beats characters who are flamboyant and all. Because that would be so annoying. So at least with Yuji being somewhat reticent and introverted, I give him a few plus points in my book. He is more of a solo adventurer and doesn’t have permanent members in his party. Yeah, his party members are just a wolf and a bunch of slimes.

Speaking of the slimes, I believe they are the series’ pet mascot. I think they could be the selling point of trying to bait us into watching this series. To be honest, they are mostly hit and miss with me. Because Yuji is so boring and monotonous, hence the ones who light up the situation no matter how tense or dangerous are the slimes. Because they are so lively and happy go lucky, you think that would make them so cute and lovable, eh? Well, maybe. I am having this dilemma if I should classify them as annoying. How could I? Aren’t those creatures freaking cute?! Oh well, like I’ve said, the slimes are there to help Yuji transmit his magic and nothing else. Okay, maybe to put a bit of smile on your faces because of how cute they sound making all sorts of simple comments. Danger or not, you can count on these slimes to be their usual happy mood. Even if they do panic, it’ll be for a short while because Yuji’s teleport will always save their asses from getting owned. Phew. Yeah, it’s so fun having these slimes around, no? Other than that, they are so abundant and can be useful to disseminate info. Why, just put an invisible slime next to somebody and eavesdrop to your heart’s content! Oh sh*t! This is getting creepy and scary the more I think about it! Yeah, Yuji f*cks your privacy! Well, better to know others than for others to know him. No wonder he is sweating in his pants when he is starting to have a legendary reputation all over the world.

I don’t even know why they had to differentiate a few slimes in the first place but I guess it beats having all the slimes look the same as if they are clones. I mean, there is your basic blue slime which is of course your basic foundation of all slime designs. Then there is one without a moustache, a pair of leaves, a scar, thick eyebrows and an eyepatch. Now we suddenly have a red flaming one. Can’t have us seeing blue all the way, huh? There is also a plain slime without any differentiation at all who is part of this group of main generic looking slimes. Not sure why but couldn’t they just another feature like a mini Mohawk hairstyle or wearing a little ribbon or tie? Anyway despite these slightly visually different aesthetic slimes, their characters are all the same so there is no point for viewers like us to have any initiative to differentiate them. They’re all the same. Don’t think much of slimes, do we?

To show that Yuji is a tamer and not really a slime master, that is why he has Proud Wolf in the pack. There’s your other beast for variety. I think Proud Wolf is some sort of mini comic relief character because he is mostly a coward. However he gets things done when needed to. Barely. Otherwise he is your other pet mascot if you don’t think the slimes look too animal enough for you. Other minor characters in this series feel forgettable since they only appear for that particular mini arc. Even more so they don’t join Yuji so that’s that. Like Tina and Lisa. I guess in a way it is good they didn’t join lone wolf Yuji because people like me will start coming up with silly harem conspiracy theories. Yeah. That too saves this series from being cheap. I thought Geigel was some karate master but who knows? Dressing can be deceiving so he turns out to be a blacksmith instead. There’s all his character role is and I don’t see how Yuji’s slimes are faster or better because the results are still the same. Yuji wins. For many of them, I guess that’s why they make their cameo in the final episode so as to remind us they’re still around. Not that it matters anyway.

The other recurring characters also feel negligible like Dryad who is just Yuji’s friend and someone whom Yuji needs help if it concerns the forest. She’s not really part of his party and I suppose they needed some hot chick too. I mean, she looks more like a cute cosplay girl than some mythical being whom one will immediately associate with the forest at first looks. Really. Yeah, and to be extra useful, here, this potion that restore your mana 10 minutes prior. I’m sure maths won’t prevail in this logic but whatever. Then there is Steyl who is like the biggest spectator for the final arc. Yeah, he got first class seats to witness how Yuji saved the world. He only exists to give Yuji that dagger so that the plot can move on to its next phase. Otherwise without him, I believe Yuji will still have to face Walter and his Blue Moon of Salvation goons. But without that connection to Steyl it would’ve made the whole thing out of context so better to connect Steyl to this guy and some history they shared instead of the generic bad-guy-whose-history-we-don’t-know-but-must-be-defeated-for-the-sake-of-the-plot. Yeah.

Well, I got to say that the art and animation of this series is mediocre. Just pretty average if you ask me. In some scenes, you can see the obvious downgrade in quality like as though they were rushing through it. Especially scenes that supposedly have some amount of movements. It’s like they skimp the details on it. Especially Sage whom I feel isn’t even completely drawn and feels like he is left hanging a bit in sketch mode. Perhaps this is on purpose but visually it makes him look weird. Then there are some recycled scenes too. The biggest offender is when Yuji starts to bring up his numerous windows to start casting his spell. Yup. Freaking same animation all the time! Don’t give me that crap excuse that he perfected his move so much that he moves exactly the same! As for the character designs, pretty bland like Yuji looking so typical and his slimes looking well, typical. Yeah, the slimes’ face reminds me of an ASCII character. This series is done by Revoroot who did Slime Taoshite 300-nen Shiranai Uchi Ni Level Max Ni Nattemashita and FLCL Alternative.

Voice acting is just rather okay. Nothing really impressed me. Because Yuji who is voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi sounds exactly (and even probably looks) like another character he voiced in Tomodachi Game: Yuichi. Oh heck, a bit like Asakaze from Sonny Boy. Isn’t that swell. Are they trying to pigeonhole him? And would you believe it that for his main slimes, each of them have their own seiyuu! Well, not that I can tell the difference since all of them try to sound the same with their fake happy slime voice. Yeah. The other casts are Wataru Takagi as Proud Wolf (titular character in Great Teacher Onizuka), Hitoshi Bifu as Steyl (Buccha in Air Gear) and Azumi Waki as Dryad (Special Week in Uma Musume: Pretty Derby).

The opening theme is Muijikaku No Tensai by Non Stop Rabbit. Typical anime rock music that doesn’t inspire me. If you have no reason to love the slimes, perhaps the ending theme will. It’s like a segment of their own. Gohan Da Yo! Dadadadan by the main slimes is a rock denpa songs and the slimes having fun singing their lines. From praising Yuji and eating, these slimes putting on a theatrical performance to their own fellow slimes are sure enjoying themselves, huh? Thank goodness the proper episode do not use such hideous CGI for these slimes’ animation! Ugh! Then right after the song ends, the slimes will go into their fun ranting about the next episode. Don’t you just love how cute and funny these slimes are? If that doesn’t seal the deal for you, then you’re a heartless slime hater! You can hate the series but don’t hate the slimes! Getting off tracked…

Overall, this series is so generic that it is just boring. Both good news and bad news is that it is both not the best (definitely) as well as not the worse isekai themed anime out there. There is nothing new and just a rehash of typical isekai themes that some of us have probably seen a million times. Even if the slimes are super cute, there is only so much they can bring to the table but definitely not enough to save the series overall. Like I’ve said in the past, this isekai formula will continue to permeate in every anime season and from the rate at it is going, it feels like until all the isekai manga, light novel or games have been adapted, it’s not slowing down anytime soon. Unfortunately for us, there is no sage who will bring salvation by cleansing the industry of the dreaded isekai tropes. It will be a holy sh*t moment if this series despite getting tons of negative reviews and points, pull off a Yuji and still survive to get a sequel! Please, NOOOOOO!!! I hope those who have this idea, do a Proud Wolf and cowardly back off instead!
