I may have been one of those who got tricked. Oh, you know. The big busty character should be the mom and the loli character her child. Who’d knew it was the other way round. Yes, people. Only in anime that mothers can look like a little girl and thus satiating the legal loli definition, bringing joys to sick lolicon lovers all around the world. Heh. But yeah, looks can be deceiving and it is definitely the case for Dekoboko Majo No Oyako Jijou. As usual, mother and daughter are not actually blood related but they’ve grown up close enough to be even closer than those with real blood ties. Heh. But don’t worry. This is not some complicated family drama. It’s comedy and whole lotta fun for the family! The daily (mis)adventures of the loli mom and busty voluptuous sexy daughter! Wowee! Something is definitely mismatched here.

Episode 1A
Many years ago, Alyssa the witch picked up an abandoned human and raised her to be her own. Well, who would have thought that this cute little loli is Alyssa the mom and this huge busty curvy babe is Viola the daughter! In town shopping together, Viola bugs mom to buy some phoenix summoning stone. Since she won’t, she throws a tantrum. Embarrassing. Alyssa is forced to as she patrons the shop of Lira. Oh yeah. Being a parenting is hard, right? Must be in their rebellious teen phase. If you’re like Lira, she’d smack her son’s butt until it becomes a six pack?! With many guys trying to flirt with Viola, obviously they back out seeing how unfriendly she is. Of course Viola thinks they want to flirt with mama and vows to protect her. Especially from those sick lolicons! Back home, Alyssa’s friends pay a visit, Giriko and Luna. Viola shows them the phoenix she summoned. This discount Big Bird? Anyway, the friends despite being over 200 years old just like Alyssa, doesn’t like being called aunty. Sister is always the better word, right? Alyssa tries to talk to Viola about dating since she is of that age. This makes Viola misinterpret that mama has found a guy she loves. That will not do! Fearing she will be stolen, she begs her not to and is willing to create this golem as papa! Alyssa clears the air that she has never considered dating. She is always happy with her.

Episode 1B
Viola wants to summon a familiar. So Phoenix wasn’t enough? Well, Alyssa can’t afford to keep fancy beasts so how about something more standard? Too bad Viola thinks such creatures will steal mama’s love! Especially cats! If she needs something soft, here are those boobs! Oddly, Viola wants to summon those that can shoot laser beams? Asking about her friends’ familiars, Giriko has a snake and Luna, well, BDSM men?! Alyssa soon tells her to think about summoning a familiar because it is a huge responsibility and she needs to take care of it. Take it from mom who has raised her since an infant. Next day, Viola has given a lot of thought about this and would start on a flower seedling instead. Too bad Phoenix feels left out and thought he was only summoned for fun! So I guess he is staying. He also helps to tend to the seedling and proves he can do better like, uhm, stretching his neck into the skies?! When Alyssa returns and trips on a cucumber, Phoenix gets scared just like a cat.

Episode 2A
Lira reminisces when Alyssa came in with Viola. Apparently she waited for a long time for someone to pick her but since none showed up, Alyssa decided to take care of her by herself. After all, it was dangerous to leave a baby human filled with lots of magic power all by herself. Lira would love to break every bone of that irresponsible parent who abandoned Viola. But she is willing to help Alyssa raise Viola. After all, she has the boobs the breastfeed! We see Lira offering weird Spartan advises whenever Alyssa was at her wits end to calm a crying Viola. Alyssa sometimes felt useless as a parent and compared herself to Lira due to all the mistakes she made. But thanks to this, Lira has also paid more attention to detail. Maybe, a bit too much. Yeah, she cooked a huge pot of rice for baby food! Sure, every family raises their kid differently. And if they’re smiling, it means you’re doing it right. Lira wants her son to come meet them but since he is too busy holing up in his room and being rude, she rushes up to beat the sh*t out of his ass! Yup, different parenting method there.

Episode 2B
Fennel the merchant elf once again pays a visit to buy some herb stocks. However Viola dislikes him and you bet the duo have a lot of hate with each other. Obviously over Alyssa. She thinks he is trying to score with mama and yes, he does have a crush on her. It all began when they first met and he joked to Viola to think of him as her dad! Alyssa always have to apologize for Viola’s rudeness. So we see all the weird pranks Viola tries to pull off on him just to make him irritated. Too bad it hurts as hell when Alyssa mentions they are just normal friends and nothing going on between them. Viola not convinced, though. One time Fennel almost got a heart attack to hear about papa. It’s that golem. Phew. He wants to say something that will make Alyssa notice him but he flubs his lines. Lame. This allows Viola to tell him why he never got rid of him once and for all. Because he is such a loser, he cannot get anywhere! But she can’t let her guard down and will continue to irk him. It gets worse with Phoenix as Viola’s accomplice to torment Fennel. Sorry, that’s not a friendship kiss when he stuck his whole head in his mouth! Poor mama has to apologize and scold them again. As Fennel leaves, Alyssa thanks him for everything and hopes he’ll keep caring for Viola. I guess that’s the sign that it is no competition when it comes to Viola.

Episode 2C
Fennel is not going to play this shady jinn eel fishing game that Viola has hatched. Eventually he is forced to because she claims there is this secret photo. He assumes it is some picture of Alyssa so you bet he is going to put all his effort to reel in an eel. Something seems to be amiss with this whack-a-mole clone and as he is going to reel in the big golden eel, it turns out to be Phoenix. He soon realizes she was never going to let him win in the first place. Just to embarrass himself.

Episode 3A
Alyssa’s friends are here to visit. Oh, Luna brought her familiars! Send them home! Not safe for kids! As the friends show their old photo album, Viola would love to see mama in her younger days. Well, she looks exactly the same. So we see them being weird, especially Giriko and Luna who were doing really weird and shady stuffs so much so Alyssa always had a hard time trying to look out for them. But of course they also helped her a lot especially when she got bullied. She is thankful to have friends like that. Apparently this is enough to make Viola jealous. Because she thought they have friends she doesn’t know. Who? Oh, those BDSM men in the album! Okay aunties, time to go home before loli mom blows her top!

Episode 3B
Viola is in denial that she is sick! Too bad Phoenix can’t help much since an immortal like him has never been sick! Eventually she has to admit that she is as she envisions her cute little cells fighting against the alien virus! Time for some healthy chicken soup. No, it’s not you Phoenix taking a hot bath!!! As Viola sleeps, sometimes this gives Alyssa some bad memories. Because in that state, her magic goes out of control. The dream manifests itself and somehow they abuse Alyssa. Phoenix prepares a bucket for Viola to puke out excessive magic built up although it is explained it is not puking. I don’t get it. As Alyssa needs to go to town to get supplies, Viola doesn’t want to be left alone. Especially for fear Alyssa will be kidnapped! Here, at least take papa golem with you! Phoenix puts a sleeping spell on her. Hope it is safe. Then a small strange dream as we see a woman abandoning baby Viola and hopes she will only hate her. Viola wakes up and asks mama if any dream manifested. Not in particular. Next day, Viola is all back to normal. Too bad Phoenix caught her cold since he is her familiar. I guess there’s a first time for everything. Flashback 10 years ago when Viola thought she wetted her bed and manifested strange stuffs. Especially a water spirit attracted to her magic and wanted to be friends. Alyssa told her about spirits as well as other stuffs like fairies and mythical beasts. This inculcated some interest in her so she wanted to bring a bunch home and live with them! Sorry, this isn’t going to be a zoo…

Episode 4A
Glind the orc wants Fennel to introduce him to a girl. They’re best friends, right? Who has helped him set up his business? Oh well, Fennel introduces Viola to her and you bet she isn’t happy. Of course he is forced to swallow his pride if Viola is going to play along with this date thingy. And so here they are having this date at the café. Glind might be totally falling for her but of course Viola is just being sarcastic and finding any chance to pull a fast one. In the end, with Viola talking so much about her mom since her interest is all about her, Glind would love to meet her too. Too bad Fennel and Viola take it the wrong way he wants to hit on mom! He promises not to but they think Alyssa is not good enough for him! Which is it?! At least Viola is being honest that this relationship will never progress beyond friendship. So there you have it, Glind. Later Fennel talks to Glind and it is obvious he is pushing him to be Fennel’s lover because if that violent girl gets a boyfriend, Alyssa’s overprotectiveness may be lesser and this means he will have a chance with mama. 2 birds with 1 stone. Oh boy, Viola heard that… When Viola brings Glind to meet Alyssa, poor orc says he will never defy Viola! Phrasing! What just happened?!

Episode 4B
When Viola sees Alyssa with an egg, she thinks she just laid one! Oh silly! It is the egg of the lizardkin. It seems they left her to take care of it for a while since they have their own business to attend to. Along with Phoenix, they talk on how they should care for it. Like singing to it or reading a book. They also talk about how it will turn out once it hatches. Seriously Viola, a seaweed? At the end of the day, Alyssa returns the egg to its rightful parents who are grateful for their help. The mom lets Viola carry it. At first she is scared in fear of dropping it but looks like she is doing pretty fine. This gives Viola hope to support it till it turns into a seaweed. Eh? What?

Episode 4C
Fennel is happy to get invited for dinner with Alyssa. Happy too soon as he steps on Viola’s trap that whisks him away to the playground. So is this some grudge for that café date with the orc? Well, she puts it this way. Since he went out his way to introduce a friend to her, she is doing the same to him. Yeah, this plant monster who literally wants to eat him! And also, this should have him back off mama for the time being. So if Fennel is going to reject this plant’s ‘kindness’, please note those kind of people are those that mama hates the most! So will he accept this new friend? Oh well, he gets eaten…

Episode 5A
Fennel rushes all the way to Alyssa’s place. Yes, Viola is out shopping so this is his chance! But look who is here? It’s Glind! Here to repair some furniture and also requested by Viola to keep Fennel in his place! There goes his plan. So the trio talk about some elf culture and lore. Sorry to destroy your fantasy about elves as Fennel explains the reality of the elf village. Like all those hot elf babes are just old MILFs who married young. Uhm, new awakening for Glind? And also they are good in archery because they had nothing else better to do. Alyssa remembers staying there during her days learning magic and that was how she met Fennel. In the end, she loves the village so this makes Fennel suggest she should return with him to his homeland. Well, Viola’s back and overheard the whole thing. She takes it as he wants to die in his homeland! We can see how this will turn out.

Episode 5B
Alyssa and Viola go to help do some potato digging at the farm of Lira’s husband, Pound. But what’s this? Potatoes running everywhere?! Well, Pound wanted to do selective breeding and since his crops weren’t doing well, he sought help from Giriko. Well, now we know the cause of this mayhem. Alyssa wants to call Giriko to fix this but Pound won’t allow her. He claims they are like his children as he has put in the effort to raise them. Yeah, time to meet a few strange ones like the Ouroboros kind sucking on its own tail, a potato that is burning by itself and even a mermaid version! You thought the slime one is normal? Wait till you see it turn into a hand! This farce is put to an end as Lira beats up her baka husband and using the Excalibur potato to destroy everything. Eventually Giriko returns them back to normal and looks like everybody will be having potato based diet for a week. One day, Alyssa is shocked to see a mandragora in her garden that she didn’t plant. Viola has her hide in the shed and be quiet. Then there is a couple of giant potato monsters fighting each other and gobbling up the other weird mandragora. Apparently Giriko wanted Viola to test this potion on mandragora so she splashed the whole thing in the garden. So it’s her fault again. The only way to catch them is to have them wear out from the battle. Just when it looked like it is going to end, they combined instead and is even deadlier! Time to call Giriko and put a stop to this. But for a while, Viola now has a strange obsession with combining.

Episode 6
Viola is shocked there is talking butt! Well, sorry to break it to you, she’s a fairy. And her name is Hip. What… Anyway, she needs their help. She takes them to the mansion of Anna Fiatoio and has a beautiful flower garden. The problem seems to be suddenly no flowers are blooming and so Anna has tasked them to investigate. It seems the root of it is Hip’s brother, Ketts (Sweet Cheeks?!). Oh God, another butt! Oh man, this butt is very angry and distrustful of outsiders. He is the one who made the flowers stopped growing. Why? It seems Anna has a boyfriend named Torino and oh man, he looks like one of those sleazy useless dudes! Hence taking away the flowers is his sign of protest until they break up. Let’s not jump to conclusions so they take a peek into Torino’s life via this magic mirror. Well, well… He is actually a very good man! Don’t judge a book by its cover! Ketts is still unconvinced and thinks he is a human trafficker?! With Anna returning, Viola thinks the fairies should take to each other. However Anna is stumped. In short, Anna like any normal humans with no magic, cannot see fairies. Flashback shows Ketts has always watched over Anna since young since she loves hanging out in her father’s garden until the day he died. In some ways, he comforted her with the flowers but essentially, Anna doesn’t know about the fairies. Ketts realizes his err and will end the protest to make the flowers bloom again tomorrow. But it seems the next day the witches return and this time they have a suggestion to have Anna see fairies. However they need her approval. They talk to her if she has felt any presence in the garden. Anna starts off by saying how much she loved her father’s garden and even when he died, it brought her some peace. She believes there is a presence but believes it to be of her father’s because that presence has always been watching over her. In the end, Ketts doesn’t want his selfishness to cause her to grieve further and will quickly restore the place. After all, knowing that someone is watching over her even though he isn’t her father is good enough. And so the flowers bloom again. Ketts notes that it is not that he wanted to be her father nor her love as gratitude. But for her to be happy. Soon Viola gets a letter from Anna about getting married and they’re invited. Hip and Ketts may be lonely for a while but Viola stays positive that one day Anna might awaken to some power to see fairies.

Episode 7A
Viola bakes chocolate cookies that look like turds?! Alyssa can’t help stare in disbelief and is in a dilemma to tell it to her because she put all her heart and soul into making it. Then it turns out to be those jinn eels. Alyssa is so ashamed of herself for thinking in such a way that she is acting strange. But still, she cannot bring herself to look at these shapes as turds. Perhaps bake them in different colours? Yeah, now we have colourful turds! Jinn eels, you mean! Even so, Alyssa can’t bring herself to think otherwise. Bad mother? Eventually, the gang gathers and enjoy these delicious turds cookies together.

Viola reading a story for someone to go to sleep. Who? It’s the sandman!!! Yup, there he is in the flesh sitting dejectedly in the corner. Sandmann relates he is having trouble sleeping lately. Lots of stress. Oh you know, adult stuffs like his wife leaving him and age related problems. Because of his insomnia, he crashed into Viola’s room during his flight. Not sure why he can’t use his own sand magic but I guess it’s laced with drugs or something. Don’t worry, he used the proper dosage on others. And no Viola, shooting beams won’t solve anything! Even if she suggests using Phoenix’s beams, he is away vacationing so can’t bother him. More stress when Sandmann notes his rival, Ole Lukoje being flash in his job. Yeah, he pours milk on your eyes. Go read up on the legend. Uh huh, Viola prefers that one, huh? Milk > sand. So as they try to put him to sleep, looks like a horror movie because his big sleepless eyes keep staring at us! Then he warns us about sleeping better because it effects health, etc. IS HE TRYING TO HINT US LATE NIGHT OTAKUS SOMETHING???!!! Eventually he wants to leave so as not to further impose on them. There is only 1 thing left for the ladies to try. The next morning, they take him to see a doctor who prescribes him what needs to be done. So in the end, always seek professional help rather than doing it yourself if unsure. Sandmann is grateful and gives Alyssa a bottle of sand. Alyssa then tells Giriko about it and she starts getting dramatic on how much money it fetches so keep it safe and guard it at all times! Because of that, Alyssa can’t sleep a wink…

Episode 8A
Luna pleading to Alyssa to teach her to cook. Of course Alyssa stays adamant in not doing so. She knows better as her cooking always blows up the kitchen! It’s not about the money and compensation, Luna! Yeah, rich witch even has her own chef to cook meals for her. Since Viola feels bad to send her away without so, I guess Alyssa has to relent for her daughter. So we see Luna doing very simple cooking. Somehow all of them end up becoming living things?! Not sure what process we missed in between! She then offers Phoenix to taste and he turns into a different bird?! Later as they clean up, Alyssa knows that this cooking is only a diversion because whenever such happens, something is on her mind. Indeed. Luna had a vision of a certain someone coming. This sends Alyssa into panic mode. Then one of the foods blows up. Our characters stay safe thanks to Phoenix’s barrier. Kitchen destroyed. But Luna compensates as promised.

At times, she starts going crazy and about to lose herself so Sheeta has to get tough on her to restrain this mad woman. Phoenix is impressed with her will to gain knowledge and allows to be studied upon. Of course as we would come to expect, Kicla will be making lots of weird requests like wanting to see his private parts (and she’ll show him hers?!) as well as turning it into some love triangle soap drama because Phoenix is closer to Viola. Sheeta is this close in beating the sh*t out of her! Eventually after all the exams and the results are… They still know nothing on what caused Phoenix’s change! The real doctor returns to examine Phoenix. Yeah, sorry for Kicla and please don’t so. First he asks if Phoenix has taken a dump. Speaking of which he hasn’t and by doing so, he returns to normal! Oh my, quick flush it away before Kicla scoops it up!!! As they return home, Phoenix feels his body is heavier. Kicla sticking to him… B*tch not gonna let him go!

Desperate about that person may be a homewrecker or something, she goes to ask Lira but she too has no idea. So they talk the possibility of that person could be her ex-boyfriend. Or ex-girlfriend? This attracts a hot looking hunk, Auri as he claims he is looking for Alyssa. This idiot tries to hit on Viola but Lira beast him up for all the cheesiness. Believing he is the homewrecker, Viola tries to strike first by saying she is Alyssa’s daughter and all. This sends Auri into shock and he soon ‘dies’. Victory? Then Alyssa comes in and to her shock, what is her daddy doing here???!!! OMG, Auri is her papa???!!! So he is here to visit his daughter. After hearing them out, his shock was because Alyssa had a daughter despite not being married. It seems father and daughter have not been in contact with each other since Alyssa picked up Viola. This is because she believes daddy would not allowed her to take Viola in. Damn right he wouldn’t. He claims she is still too young to rear a child and should continue be his girl. Alyssa intended to introduce Viola eventually but always had to reconsider since he is a bad influence. So, why hasn’t he contacted her in 16 years? Apparently he was arrested! Bad dad? Some flirting with somebody and he got framed but his case got dismissed. Alyssa not impressed. Well, here are some bad memories of when she was a kid, he told some adult experiences to Luna and Giriko. Viola impressed with Auri now? Lira is surprised he accepts his granddaughter quickly. Strangeness runs in the family because you see, Auri’s wife is his sister?! HOLY SH*T?! WHAT?! Actually, he helped co-parent his sister’s daughter. So technically Auri is the uncle? Auri decides to leave so as not to trouble them. Alyssa somewhat wants to forgive him and let him stay for the night. Until she learns he was trying to hit on Viola. Out you go and don’t come back! In actual fact, Lady is a tsundere who is in love with Lira. However each time she tries to speak, it all comes out messed up like as though she wants to find trouble with her! This means instead of trying to be nice and praise Lira, she challenges her to see which of them can socialize more. Lira sees no point in participating but since Lady is being haughty, she accepts and the loser must never come to this park again. When Lady sees Alyssa and notes how close a friend she is to Lira, she gets jealous. Only, Viola senses it all and threatens her! So we see Guita trying to socialize with weird groups. A group of daddies and jinn eels? In the end, Alyssa announces the results: It’s a tie. While the mothers were doing great, they failed to consider the needs of their babies and they didn’t have much fun. So both scored zero and it’s a draw. Both sides start to apologize to each other as Alyssa tries to set up Lady to shake hands with Lira. Lady wonders if Alyssa knows her true feelings. What a great lady. Don’t love her too much because Viola can sense it and won’t allow it! But as expected, Lady screws up and slaps away Lira’s hand. B*tch mode activated as she claims it’s not like she likes this loser. She runs away while lamenting her stupidity but is somewhat happy since she got to touch Lira’s hand. Phoenix tries to be a gentleman and teach him stuffs but it’s just not working out. Eventually Koala misses Viola and wants to see her badly as Phoenix finally lulls him to sleep. When the ladies get back, they see the place in a mess and they think Phoenix didn’t do a good job being a senpai. Understandably, Phoenix now throws a tantrum and wants to quit being a senpai!

With all the good food and being fed every day, you bet Phoenix has grown huge and fat! Sure, Phoenix’s extreme answer is to not eat for year but the rest suggest improving eating habits and exercise. So who invited Kicla to help out with this? I guess she invited herself. You sure she’s not here to experiment on the big bird? Maybe… She wants to suck his fats out anyway… Thankfully she has an exercise regimen for him. At the lake, WTF Kicla already out of breath? Somebody needs the exercising… So we see Phoenix do a few exercises like running, swimming and push-ups but with hilarious effects. At the end of the day, Kicla also comes up exercising plans for the ladies for them to stay fit. Phoenix thanks Kicla and also apologizes since he thought she was only here for his body. She notes, when she sees his family worrying about him, it makes her want to help. So Phoenix follows the recommended regimen. And now he turns into a small little bird! I don’t even know… But the ladies are now desperately trying to fatten him up back to shape.

Episode 11C
Our virgin boys (Fennel and Glind if you don’t know who I’m talking about) must be desperate. Desperate to let Auri out of his cell so he can give them some tips on how to get dates. You sure you picked the right guy? I mean, this skirt chaser is flirting with women for totally different reasons. So aside having a handsome face, Auri talks about being considerate of others. Then he narrates his experience of being turned into a woman by his sister as an experiment. Thus you can’t say he is wrong that he understand female emotions better than them. After a few talk and basically our virgins realize there is no secret to it all, Auri does mention there is a shortcut to it. I don’t know what this scene is about but he is going to make them his toys? Is he going to rape them or what?! You bet they’re shivering in their pants! Luckily Alyssa is nearby and she beats him up to stop this farce. Alyssa so disappointed… His reputation has further tanked.

Episode 12
Alyssa still not wanting Auri to get close to Viola. Bad influence! With Giriko and Luna here for entertainment, Auri realizes they have known about Alyssa having a child all along but chose not to tell him since Alyssa wanted them to keep a secret. Then he realizes that Fennel would also know. He calls that elf to get his ass here to get his beat down! Otherwise he will go over there and kill him! Viola would love grandpa to kill him but of course sweet Alyssa will not allow any bullying on him. Viola tries to warn Auri that Fennel is trying to hit on mama. What?! Auri approves?! He knows Fennel and it is better than some random stranger jerk, right?! Though, he still doesn’t think he will have any chance with her. Auri soon goes into despair that Glind also knows about this. It’s like he is the last one to know. So gonna call him and beat his ass up? Viola wonders about grandma and it seems Alyssa finds it hard to describe her. Yes, she is a witch and not a monster! However she gives off this mysterious aura as Alyssa remembers her giving some great advice in raising a child. Grandma is a great person who wished happiness for every moment in her life. Then they go over photos of baby Viola. Yeah, let’s reminisce those days. WTF Auri taking it all out on Fennel? You thought Giriko and Luna have it hard trying to care for Viola (little baby doesn’t want her aunties to go but as soon as mama returns, she forgets them and rushes to her!), you should’ve seen her treating Fennel. Yeah, how many times has he withstand her kiddie beatings? Worse, one day walking with her in the street, Viola claimed he was a stranger so super old granny thought he was a kidnapper and beat the sh*t out of him!!! Then Auri talks about Alyssa as a baby. Always sick but yeah, he was still a bad influence on her. As Viola is still a baby in the eyes of the adults, the same can be said for Alyssa in Auri’s eyes. Phoenix commends them for doing a good job and to him, all of them are still babies in his eyes. Uhm, WTF this big galaxy hug? Nice and warm… In the aftermath, the townspeople still mistakes Viola as the mom and Alyssa the child.

Growing Pains: Everybody Loves Alyssa!
There is nothing happier than a dysfunctional family continuing to be a dysfunctional family. It’s the only way that they can stay happy and make us laugh at the same time. I highly doubt things will change because if it would, there’s going to be a hell lot of resistance. Like Alyssa getting a real life partner to settle down with! Oh you bet our Viola will never ever going to allow that even if God has decreed it Himself! So stay healthy and happy via status quo. Everybody wins this way. Yes they do.

Those wishing for some sort of storyline and plot to follow might be disappointed because there is basically none here. In fact, reading the synopsis should already give you a hint on how this series would play out. Unless you’re a newbie in the world of anime. Hey, what do you expect? Viola’s real parents suddenly showing and being the repentant parents they are, want to reclaim Viola back into their fold? And hence the battle of custodies inside and outside of court! Lots of tension and drama as well as confused feelings welling up from both sides of the divide. Uhm… Oh gee… That’s actually kinda possible… I can actually foresee imagine that… But nah! It’s not that kind of anime! Hence it was pretty much expected from my side that the series will mainly be random skits and double that as most of the episodes are divided into 2 separate skits so the funny moments don’t overstay its welcome. Once we’re done with that joke in that particular skit, leave it behind and let’s move on to the next fresh one.

Without an actual storyline to follow, it falls on the characters to deliver the charms and I should say they don’t disappoint. Obviously as the series is of this comedy genre, wacky personalities are to be expected. You’ll cringe and laugh at them but I guess that is how they play out. Most of the characters stay the same from start to finish so once you get to know the character, you can pretty guess how he/she pretty much acts for the rest of the series.

So let’s start off with our main mother and daughter pair, Alyssa and Viola since the series mostly centres around them. Obviously Alyssa is your good natured witch-cum-mom who wants the best for her adopted daughter. Smothered with so much love, probably that contributed to Viola being overly possessive about her mom. Nobody is going to take her away from her beloved mommy! I bet she would even kill just to protect that privilege! But don’t worry, it’s not that kind of anime so nobody is going to die here. Hopefully. Viola may look like a busty mature woman but she has a mind of child and that means she likes all those kiddie stuffs like monsters and robots, sometimes making her a little bit like a tomboy. But that’s okay, no matter what Viola turns out, Alyssa will always love her, right? Not as much as Viola loves mommy… I hope the irregular witch won’t turn into an irregular b*tch… Lolicon lovers out there better not fawn too much over Alyssa if you know what is good for you! Viola will make sure you turn into teen or MILF fetish!!!

I wonder if Phoenix is the pet mascot of the series considering how cartoonish his looks. But yeah, if he was drawn in a surreal form even if it is for comical purposes, I don’t think we can handle how majestic he looks! Anyway, being a familiar of Viola, he helps take care of the household and sometimes provides advice since as some legendary bird, he has lived long enough. I don’t remember how Koala was summoned and before I knew it, it was already part of the family? Did I miss something somewhere? Hey, at least better than their ‘father’. Oh you know, that clay person whom Viola created just in case mommy needs a daddy. It’s like they call him one moment but the next second, oh sorry you’re not needed anymore. Yeah, some sort of running joke…

Then there is Fennel who wants to be Alyssa’s lover but no prizes in guessing who is always cock blocking him. That’s right, it’s often the father who is not amused when his daughter is dating some boy. But in this case, the daughter is the one stepping up to that role and not going to let any man (not just you Fennel) to get an inch closer to mommy dearest. Yeah, it’s like she has monopoly rights over mom. Well, keep trying. But I’m old enough and a veteran to know how it will all turn out. Then you have the lonely orc Glind who just wants to find a girl to date and Alyssa’s crazy witch pals. Thank goodness Luna doesn’t come around often or her BDSM fetish might be a bad influence on Viola. Perhaps the character you don’t want to mess with is Lira because she’s really a fierce woman and her muscles are tell-tale signs she is stronger than you pipsqueaks. This woman doesn’t hesitate to get violent if she’s not amused with you. Beating you up is always an option! Just ask her henpecked husband and her son whom we have never seen his face. I guess every family has their own different ways of upbringing. Different strokes for different folks. If you need daughter-who-is-not-impressed-with-father trope, Auri’s your guy. Better late in finding out the truth rather than never, no? It’s a wonder with all the bad influence, thank goodness Alyssa didn’t turn out like him. Even at such a young age, she can feel disgust with his methods.

While it may be surprising that this series considerably has a small amount of main and supporting casts, the rest are mainly guest characters and only appear for a single episode before they are never heard of again. From those butt fairies to that insomniac sandman and a certain tsundere b*tch. Yes, more quirky characters to laugh at and although they won’t be appearing anymore (or rather as often), I bet this doesn’t mean that we would hear the last of them. The most memorable one being Anna and the butt fairies’ episode because that was really heart-warming and touching in the end. And you thought this entire series was going to be slapstick all the way, huh? And yes, don’t judge a book by its cover!

Art and animation are pretty standard but with the colouring and hues vividly bright and colourful, one might mistake this to be targeted for younger audiences. Especially Phoenix’s design that is just so cartoonish (don’t forget those jinn eels too) and so out of place if you compared to the rest. But of course when you have Luna’s BDSM servants, fairies that look like butts and a perverted nurse, it is anything for little kids. Don’t be fooled by Alyssa’s cute loli looks. Unless you’re a lolicon… Then better watch out because Viola is going to get you!!! This anime is done by A-Real and I don’t blame you if you haven’t heard of them. Aside from Kenka Banchou Otome, they only animated the dreaded Urawa No Usagi-san and its even more dreadful sequel, Musashino as well as that sleazy Iya Na Kao Sare Nagara Opantsu Misete Moraitai. Yes. That pantsu show. But don’t expect to see any panty slips from Alyssa. Because Viola is going to gorge your eyes out and smash your brains flat if you do so!!!

Voice acting, it seems there are a bunch of recognizable seiyuus. The one taking the cake is Aoi Koga as Alyssa. Well, if you know how Kaguya-sama sounds like in her scatterbrain mode, this is what Alyssa feels like. Kaguya-sama 24/7. No kidding. Then there are Nana Mizuki as Viola, Junichi Suwabe as Auri, Romi Paku as Lira, Daisuke Ono as Glind, Yui Horie as Hip, Yuuki Kaji as Ketts and Miyuki Sawashiro as grandma. I was sure Kana Hanazawa as Lady but WTF it’s not? Instead she’s the narrator and Kotono Mitsuishi was the voice of Lady. Are you sure they did not mix up that one?! I’m pretty cocksure it’s Kana Hanazawa’s voice as Lady! What do you mean it’s not! Yeah, she’s the narrator alright… Somehow evading my radar is Aki Toyosaki as Sheeta and to my ultimate surprise, Ikue Ohtani is Koala?! I wouldn’t have guessed it in a million years since Koala has no spoken dialogue and only huffing and growling. And so Pikachu and Chopper has become a poisonous koala!!! OMG!!!

The rest of the casts are Takaya Hashi as Phoenix (Inuarashi in One Piece), Takayuki Kondou as Fennel (Oishi in Prince Of Tennis), Katsuyuki Konishi as Pond (Fuegoleon in Black Clover), Akira Sekina as Luna (Kuon in Tenkuu Shinpan), You Taichi as Giriko (Anzu in Prison School), Minako Kotobuki as Kicla (Tsumugi in K-ON!), Rika Nagae as Anna (Mitsuha in Rougo Ni Sonaete Isekai De 8-manmai No Kinka Wo Tamemasu) and Takaya Kuroda as Sandmann (Dagger In Show By Rock). As we all veterans know about Nana Mizuki’s powerful vocals and she herself has been a successful singer, therefore it is only right for her to show off her talented singing chops via opening theme, Sugar Doughnuts. Personally, I only find this rather okay. I mean, this piece feels a lot like a jazzy fanfare and some funk in it. But the ending theme is weirder. If you are familiar with the comical nature of Hamefura’s first season’s opening theme, it is somewhat the same vibes here. Because yes, it is Angela singing Welcome. It has this silly carnival atmosphere feel to it so it’s only apt for our characters doing their cute dance to match the liveliness of the song.

Overall, I find it quite a funny and entertaining series, tickling my bones and in some ways also creeping me out. Oh you know, Viola being super obsessive about her mom! If you can look past that, it’s all in the name of comedy, right? Well, I don’t think it will be anything near funny for Viola… But this anime should be right up your alley if you want something light-hearted to watch (don’t mind the slapstick comedy like Viola and Lira violence) rather than following some convoluted plot that has more than 100 episodes, a handful of zany characters then this should be a recommended series of the season to watch. Season of the (dekoboko) witch? Uhm, Tweeny witches maybe? Sorry for lame witch puns… Hey, I’m not trying to steal Alyssa’s heart or anything, okay!
