I may have been one of those who got tricked. Oh, you know. The big busty character should be the mom and the loli character her child. Who’d knew it was the other way round. Yes, people. Only in anime that mothers can look like a little girl and thus satiating the legal loli definition, bringing joys to sick lolicon lovers all around the world. Heh. But yeah, looks can be deceiving and it is definitely the case for Dekoboko Majo No Oyako Jijou. As usual, mother and daughter are not actually blood related but they’ve grown up close enough to be even closer than those with real blood ties. Heh. But don’t worry. This is not some complicated family drama. It’s comedy and whole lotta fun for the family! The daily (mis)adventures of the loli mom and busty voluptuous sexy daughter! Wowee! Something is definitely mismatched here.

Episode 1A
Many years ago, Alyssa the witch picked up an abandoned human and raised her to be her own. Well, who would have thought that this cute little loli is Alyssa the mom and this huge busty curvy babe is Viola the daughter! In town shopping together, Viola bugs mom to buy some phoenix summoning stone. Since she won’t, she throws a tantrum. Embarrassing. Alyssa is forced to as she patrons the shop of Lira. Oh yeah. Being a parenting is hard, right? Must be in their rebellious teen phase. If you’re like Lira, she’d smack her son’s butt until it becomes a six pack?! With many guys trying to flirt with Viola, obviously they back out seeing how unfriendly she is. Of course Viola thinks they want to flirt with mama and vows to protect her. Especially from those sick lolicons! Back home, Alyssa’s friends pay a visit, Giriko and Luna. Viola shows them the phoenix she summoned. This discount Big Bird? Anyway, the friends despite being over 200 years old just like Alyssa, doesn’t like being called aunty. Sister is always the better word, right? Alyssa tries to talk to Viola about dating since she is of that age. This makes Viola misinterpret that mama has found a guy she loves. That will not do! Fearing she will be stolen, she begs her not to and is willing to create this golem as papa! Alyssa clears the air that she has never considered dating. She is always happy with her.

Episode 1B
Viola wants to summon a familiar. So Phoenix wasn’t enough? Well, Alyssa can’t afford to keep fancy beasts so how about something more standard? Too bad Viola thinks such creatures will steal mama’s love! Especially cats! If she needs something soft, here are those boobs! Oddly, Viola wants to summon those that can shoot laser beams? Asking about her friends’ familiars, Giriko has a snake and Luna, well, BDSM men?! Alyssa soon tells her to think about summoning a familiar because it is a huge responsibility and she needs to take care of it. Take it from mom who has raised her since an infant. Next day, Viola has given a lot of thought about this and would start on a flower seedling instead. Too bad Phoenix feels left out and thought he was only summoned for fun! So I guess he is staying. He also helps to tend to the seedling and proves he can do better like, uhm, stretching his neck into the skies?! When Alyssa returns and trips on a cucumber, Phoenix gets scared just like a cat.

Episode 2A
Lira reminisces when Alyssa came in with Viola. Apparently she waited for a long time for someone to pick her but since none showed up, Alyssa decided to take care of her by herself. After all, it was dangerous to leave a baby human filled with lots of magic power all by herself. Lira would love to break every bone of that irresponsible parent who abandoned Viola. But she is willing to help Alyssa raise Viola. After all, she has the boobs the breastfeed! We see Lira offering weird Spartan advises whenever Alyssa was at her wits end to calm a crying Viola. Alyssa sometimes felt useless as a parent and compared herself to Lira due to all the mistakes she made. But thanks to this, Lira has also paid more attention to detail. Maybe, a bit too much. Yeah, she cooked a huge pot of rice for baby food! Sure, every family raises their kid differently. And if they’re smiling, it means you’re doing it right. Lira wants her son to come meet them but since he is too busy holing up in his room and being rude, she rushes up to beat the sh*t out of his ass! Yup, different parenting method there.

Episode 2B
Fennel the merchant elf once again pays a visit to buy some herb stocks. However Viola dislikes him and you bet the duo have a lot of hate with each other. Obviously over Alyssa. She thinks he is trying to score with mama and yes, he does have a crush on her. It all began when they first met and he joked to Viola to think of him as her dad! Alyssa always have to apologize for Viola’s rudeness. So we see all the weird pranks Viola tries to pull off on him just to make him irritated. Too bad it hurts as hell when Alyssa mentions they are just normal friends and nothing going on between them. Viola not convinced, though. One time Fennel almost got a heart attack to hear about papa. It’s that golem. Phew. He wants to say something that will make Alyssa notice him but he flubs his lines. Lame. This allows Viola to tell him why he never got rid of him once and for all. Because he is such a loser, he cannot get anywhere! But she can’t let her guard down and will continue to irk him. It gets worse with Phoenix as Viola’s accomplice to torment Fennel. Sorry, that’s not a friendship kiss when he stuck his whole head in his mouth! Poor mama has to apologize and scold them again. As Fennel leaves, Alyssa thanks him for everything and hopes he’ll keep caring for Viola. I guess that’s the sign that it is no competition when it comes to Viola.

Episode 2C
Fennel is not going to play this shady jinn eel fishing game that Viola has hatched. Eventually he is forced to because she claims there is this secret photo. He assumes it is some picture of Alyssa so you bet he is going to put all his effort to reel in an eel. Something seems to be amiss with this whack-a-mole clone and as he is going to reel in the big golden eel, it turns out to be Phoenix. He soon realizes she was never going to let him win in the first place. Just to embarrass himself.

Episode 3A
Alyssa’s friends are here to visit. Oh, Luna brought her familiars! Send them home! Not safe for kids! As the friends show their old photo album, Viola would love to see mama in her younger days. Well, she looks exactly the same. So we see them being weird, especially Giriko and Luna who were doing really weird and shady stuffs so much so Alyssa always had a hard time trying to look out for them. But of course they also helped her a lot especially when she got bullied. She is thankful to have friends like that. Apparently this is enough to make Viola jealous. Because she thought they have friends she doesn’t know. Who? Oh, those BDSM men in the album! Okay aunties, time to go home before loli mom blows her top!

Episode 3B
Viola is in denial that she is sick! Too bad Phoenix can’t help much since an immortal like him has never been sick! Eventually she has to admit that she is as she envisions her cute little cells fighting against the alien virus! Time for some healthy chicken soup. No, it’s not you Phoenix taking a hot bath!!! As Viola sleeps, sometimes this gives Alyssa some bad memories. Because in that state, her magic goes out of control. The dream manifests itself and somehow they abuse Alyssa. Phoenix prepares a bucket for Viola to puke out excessive magic built up although it is explained it is not puking. I don’t get it. As Alyssa needs to go to town to get supplies, Viola doesn’t want to be left alone. Especially for fear Alyssa will be kidnapped! Here, at least take papa golem with you! Phoenix puts a sleeping spell on her. Hope it is safe. Then a small strange dream as we see a woman abandoning baby Viola and hopes she will only hate her. Viola wakes up and asks mama if any dream manifested. Not in particular. Next day, Viola is all back to normal. Too bad Phoenix caught her cold since he is her familiar. I guess there’s a first time for everything. Flashback 10 years ago when Viola thought she wetted her bed and manifested strange stuffs. Especially a water spirit attracted to her magic and wanted to be friends. Alyssa told her about spirits as well as other stuffs like fairies and mythical beasts. This inculcated some interest in her so she wanted to bring a bunch home and live with them! Sorry, this isn’t going to be a zoo…

Episode 4A
Glind the orc wants Fennel to introduce him to a girl. They’re best friends, right? Who has helped him set up his business? Oh well, Fennel introduces Viola to her and you bet she isn’t happy. Of course he is forced to swallow his pride if Viola is going to play along with this date thingy. And so here they are having this date at the café. Glind might be totally falling for her but of course Viola is just being sarcastic and finding any chance to pull a fast one. In the end, with Viola talking so much about her mom since her interest is all about her, Glind would love to meet her too. Too bad Fennel and Viola take it the wrong way he wants to hit on mom! He promises not to but they think Alyssa is not good enough for him! Which is it?! At least Viola is being honest that this relationship will never progress beyond friendship. So there you have it, Glind. Later Fennel talks to Glind and it is obvious he is pushing him to be Fennel’s lover because if that violent girl gets a boyfriend, Alyssa’s overprotectiveness may be lesser and this means he will have a chance with mama. 2 birds with 1 stone. Oh boy, Viola heard that… When Viola brings Glind to meet Alyssa, poor orc says he will never defy Viola! Phrasing! What just happened?!

Episode 4B
When Viola sees Alyssa with an egg, she thinks she just laid one! Oh silly! It is the egg of the lizardkin. It seems they left her to take care of it for a while since they have their own business to attend to. Along with Phoenix, they talk on how they should care for it. Like singing to it or reading a book. They also talk about how it will turn out once it hatches. Seriously Viola, a seaweed? At the end of the day, Alyssa returns the egg to its rightful parents who are grateful for their help. The mom lets Viola carry it. At first she is scared in fear of dropping it but looks like she is doing pretty fine. This gives Viola hope to support it till it turns into a seaweed. Eh? What?

Episode 4C
Fennel is happy to get invited for dinner with Alyssa. Happy too soon as he steps on Viola’s trap that whisks him away to the playground. So is this some grudge for that café date with the orc? Well, she puts it this way. Since he went out his way to introduce a friend to her, she is doing the same to him. Yeah, this plant monster who literally wants to eat him! And also, this should have him back off mama for the time being. So if Fennel is going to reject this plant’s ‘kindness’, please note those kind of people are those that mama hates the most! So will he accept this new friend? Oh well, he gets eaten…

Episode 5A
Fennel rushes all the way to Alyssa’s place. Yes, Viola is out shopping so this is his chance! But look who is here? It’s Glind! Here to repair some furniture and also requested by Viola to keep Fennel in his place! There goes his plan. So the trio talk about some elf culture and lore. Sorry to destroy your fantasy about elves as Fennel explains the reality of the elf village. Like all those hot elf babes are just old MILFs who married young. Uhm, new awakening for Glind? And also they are good in archery because they had nothing else better to do. Alyssa remembers staying there during her days learning magic and that was how she met Fennel. In the end, she loves the village so this makes Fennel suggest she should return with him to his homeland. Well, Viola’s back and overheard the whole thing. She takes it as he wants to die in his homeland! We can see how this will turn out.

Episode 5B
Alyssa and Viola go to help do some potato digging at the farm of Lira’s husband, Pound. But what’s this? Potatoes running everywhere?! Well, Pound wanted to do selective breeding and since his crops weren’t doing well, he sought help from Giriko. Well, now we know the cause of this mayhem. Alyssa wants to call Giriko to fix this but Pound won’t allow her. He claims they are like his children as he has put in the effort to raise them. Yeah, time to meet a few strange ones like the Ouroboros kind sucking on its own tail, a potato that is burning by itself and even a mermaid version! You thought the slime one is normal? Wait till you see it turn into a hand! This farce is put to an end as Lira beats up her baka husband and using the Excalibur potato to destroy everything. Eventually Giriko returns them back to normal and looks like everybody will be having potato based diet for a week. One day, Alyssa is shocked to see a mandragora in her garden that she didn’t plant. Viola has her hide in the shed and be quiet. Then there is a couple of giant potato monsters fighting each other and gobbling up the other weird mandragora. Apparently Giriko wanted Viola to test this potion on mandragora so she splashed the whole thing in the garden. So it’s her fault again. The only way to catch them is to have them wear out from the battle. Just when it looked like it is going to end, they combined instead and is even deadlier! Time to call Giriko and put a stop to this. But for a while, Viola now has a strange obsession with combining.

Episode 6
Viola is shocked there is talking butt! Well, sorry to break it to you, she’s a fairy. And her name is Hip. What… Anyway, she needs their help. She takes them to the mansion of Anna Fiatoio and has a beautiful flower garden. The problem seems to be suddenly no flowers are blooming and so Anna has tasked them to investigate. It seems the root of it is Hip’s brother, Ketts (Sweet Cheeks?!). Oh God, another butt! Oh man, this butt is very angry and distrustful of outsiders. He is the one who made the flowers stopped growing. Why? It seems Anna has a boyfriend named Torino and oh man, he looks like one of those sleazy useless dudes! Hence taking away the flowers is his sign of protest until they break up. Let’s not jump to conclusions so they take a peek into Torino’s life via this magic mirror. Well, well… He is actually a very good man! Don’t judge a book by its cover! Ketts is still unconvinced and thinks he is a human trafficker?! With Anna returning, Viola thinks the fairies should take to each other. However Anna is stumped. In short, Anna like any normal humans with no magic, cannot see fairies. Flashback shows Ketts has always watched over Anna since young since she loves hanging out in her father’s garden until the day he died. In some ways, he comforted her with the flowers but essentially, Anna doesn’t know about the fairies. Ketts realizes his err and will end the protest to make the flowers bloom again tomorrow. But it seems the next day the witches return and this time they have a suggestion to have Anna see fairies. However they need her approval. They talk to her if she has felt any presence in the garden. Anna starts off by saying how much she loved her father’s garden and even when he died, it brought her some peace. She believes there is a presence but believes it to be of her father’s because that presence has always been watching over her. In the end, Ketts doesn’t want his selfishness to cause her to grieve further and will quickly restore the place. After all, knowing that someone is watching over her even though he isn’t her father is good enough. And so the flowers bloom again. Ketts notes that it is not that he wanted to be her father nor her love as gratitude. But for her to be happy. Soon Viola gets a letter from Anna about getting married and they’re invited. Hip and Ketts may be lonely for a while but Viola stays positive that one day Anna might awaken to some power to see fairies.

Episode 7A
Viola bakes chocolate cookies that look like turds?! Alyssa can’t help stare in disbelief and is in a dilemma to tell it to her because she put all her heart and soul into making it. Then it turns out to be those jinn eels. Alyssa is so ashamed of herself for thinking in such a way that she is acting strange. But still, she cannot bring herself to look at these shapes as turds. Perhaps bake them in different colours? Yeah, now we have colourful turds! Jinn eels, you mean! Even so, Alyssa can’t bring herself to think otherwise. Bad mother? Eventually, the gang gathers and enjoy these delicious turds cookies together.

Viola reading a story for someone to go to sleep. Who? It’s the sandman!!! Yup, there he is in the flesh sitting dejectedly in the corner. Sandmann relates he is having trouble sleeping lately. Lots of stress. Oh you know, adult stuffs like his wife leaving him and age related problems. Because of his insomnia, he crashed into Viola’s room during his flight. Not sure why he can’t use his own sand magic but I guess it’s laced with drugs or something. Don’t worry, he used the proper dosage on others. And no Viola, shooting beams won’t solve anything! Even if she suggests using Phoenix’s beams, he is away vacationing so can’t bother him. More stress when Sandmann notes his rival, Ole Lukoje being flash in his job. Yeah, he pours milk on your eyes. Go read up on the legend. Uh huh, Viola prefers that one, huh? Milk > sand. So as they try to put him to sleep, looks like a horror movie because his big sleepless eyes keep staring at us! Then he warns us about sleeping better because it effects health, etc. IS HE TRYING TO HINT US LATE NIGHT OTAKUS SOMETHING???!!! Eventually he wants to leave so as not to further impose on them. There is only 1 thing left for the ladies to try. The next morning, they take him to see a doctor who prescribes him what needs to be done. So in the end, always seek professional help rather than doing it yourself if unsure. Sandmann is grateful and gives Alyssa a bottle of sand. Alyssa then tells Giriko about it and she starts getting dramatic on how much money it fetches so keep it safe and guard it at all times! Because of that, Alyssa can’t sleep a wink…

Episode 8A
Luna pleading to Alyssa to teach her to cook. Of course Alyssa stays adamant in not doing so. She knows better as her cooking always blows up the kitchen! It’s not about the money and compensation, Luna! Yeah, rich witch even has her own chef to cook meals for her. Since Viola feels bad to send her away without so, I guess Alyssa has to relent for her daughter. So we see Luna doing very simple cooking. Somehow all of them end up becoming living things?! Not sure what process we missed in between! She then offers Phoenix to taste and he turns into a different bird?! Later as they clean up, Alyssa knows that this cooking is only a diversion because whenever such happens, something is on her mind. Indeed. Luna had a vision of a certain someone coming. This sends Alyssa into panic mode. Then one of the foods blows up. Our characters stay safe thanks to Phoenix’s barrier. Kitchen destroyed. But Luna compensates as promised.

At times, she starts going crazy and about to lose herself so Sheeta has to get tough on her to restrain this mad woman. Phoenix is impressed with her will to gain knowledge and allows to be studied upon. Of course as we would come to expect, Kicla will be making lots of weird requests like wanting to see his private parts (and she’ll show him hers?!) as well as turning it into some love triangle soap drama because Phoenix is closer to Viola. Sheeta is this close in beating the sh*t out of her! Eventually after all the exams and the results are… They still know nothing on what caused Phoenix’s change! The real doctor returns to examine Phoenix. Yeah, sorry for Kicla and please don’t so. First he asks if Phoenix has taken a dump. Speaking of which he hasn’t and by doing so, he returns to normal! Oh my, quick flush it away before Kicla scoops it up!!! As they return home, Phoenix feels his body is heavier. Kicla sticking to him… B*tch not gonna let him go!

Desperate about that person may be a homewrecker or something, she goes to ask Lira but she too has no idea. So they talk the possibility of that person could be her ex-boyfriend. Or ex-girlfriend? This attracts a hot looking hunk, Auri as he claims he is looking for Alyssa. This idiot tries to hit on Viola but Lira beast him up for all the cheesiness. Believing he is the homewrecker, Viola tries to strike first by saying she is Alyssa’s daughter and all. This sends Auri into shock and he soon ‘dies’. Victory? Then Alyssa comes in and to her shock, what is her daddy doing here???!!! OMG, Auri is her papa???!!! So he is here to visit his daughter. After hearing them out, his shock was because Alyssa had a daughter despite not being married. It seems father and daughter have not been in contact with each other since Alyssa picked up Viola. This is because she believes daddy would not allowed her to take Viola in. Damn right he wouldn’t. He claims she is still too young to rear a child and should continue be his girl. Alyssa intended to introduce Viola eventually but always had to reconsider since he is a bad influence. So, why hasn’t he contacted her in 16 years? Apparently he was arrested! Bad dad? Some flirting with somebody and he got framed but his case got dismissed. Alyssa not impressed. Well, here are some bad memories of when she was a kid, he told some adult experiences to Luna and Giriko. Viola impressed with Auri now? Lira is surprised he accepts his granddaughter quickly. Strangeness runs in the family because you see, Auri’s wife is his sister?! HOLY SH*T?! WHAT?! Actually, he helped co-parent his sister’s daughter. So technically Auri is the uncle? Auri decides to leave so as not to trouble them. Alyssa somewhat wants to forgive him and let him stay for the night. Until she learns he was trying to hit on Viola. Out you go and don’t come back! In actual fact, Lady is a tsundere who is in love with Lira. However each time she tries to speak, it all comes out messed up like as though she wants to find trouble with her! This means instead of trying to be nice and praise Lira, she challenges her to see which of them can socialize more. Lira sees no point in participating but since Lady is being haughty, she accepts and the loser must never come to this park again. When Lady sees Alyssa and notes how close a friend she is to Lira, she gets jealous. Only, Viola senses it all and threatens her! So we see Guita trying to socialize with weird groups. A group of daddies and jinn eels? In the end, Alyssa announces the results: It’s a tie. While the mothers were doing great, they failed to consider the needs of their babies and they didn’t have much fun. So both scored zero and it’s a draw. Both sides start to apologize to each other as Alyssa tries to set up Lady to shake hands with Lira. Lady wonders if Alyssa knows her true feelings. What a great lady. Don’t love her too much because Viola can sense it and won’t allow it! But as expected, Lady screws up and slaps away Lira’s hand. B*tch mode activated as she claims it’s not like she likes this loser. She runs away while lamenting her stupidity but is somewhat happy since she got to touch Lira’s hand. Phoenix tries to be a gentleman and teach him stuffs but it’s just not working out. Eventually Koala misses Viola and wants to see her badly as Phoenix finally lulls him to sleep. When the ladies get back, they see the place in a mess and they think Phoenix didn’t do a good job being a senpai. Understandably, Phoenix now throws a tantrum and wants to quit being a senpai!

With all the good food and being fed every day, you bet Phoenix has grown huge and fat! Sure, Phoenix’s extreme answer is to not eat for year but the rest suggest improving eating habits and exercise. So who invited Kicla to help out with this? I guess she invited herself. You sure she’s not here to experiment on the big bird? Maybe… She wants to suck his fats out anyway… Thankfully she has an exercise regimen for him. At the lake, WTF Kicla already out of breath? Somebody needs the exercising… So we see Phoenix do a few exercises like running, swimming and push-ups but with hilarious effects. At the end of the day, Kicla also comes up exercising plans for the ladies for them to stay fit. Phoenix thanks Kicla and also apologizes since he thought she was only here for his body. She notes, when she sees his family worrying about him, it makes her want to help. So Phoenix follows the recommended regimen. And now he turns into a small little bird! I don’t even know… But the ladies are now desperately trying to fatten him up back to shape.

Episode 11C
Our virgin boys (Fennel and Glind if you don’t know who I’m talking about) must be desperate. Desperate to let Auri out of his cell so he can give them some tips on how to get dates. You sure you picked the right guy? I mean, this skirt chaser is flirting with women for totally different reasons. So aside having a handsome face, Auri talks about being considerate of others. Then he narrates his experience of being turned into a woman by his sister as an experiment. Thus you can’t say he is wrong that he understand female emotions better than them. After a few talk and basically our virgins realize there is no secret to it all, Auri does mention there is a shortcut to it. I don’t know what this scene is about but he is going to make them his toys? Is he going to rape them or what?! You bet they’re shivering in their pants! Luckily Alyssa is nearby and she beats him up to stop this farce. Alyssa so disappointed… His reputation has further tanked.

Episode 12
Alyssa still not wanting Auri to get close to Viola. Bad influence! With Giriko and Luna here for entertainment, Auri realizes they have known about Alyssa having a child all along but chose not to tell him since Alyssa wanted them to keep a secret. Then he realizes that Fennel would also know. He calls that elf to get his ass here to get his beat down! Otherwise he will go over there and kill him! Viola would love grandpa to kill him but of course sweet Alyssa will not allow any bullying on him. Viola tries to warn Auri that Fennel is trying to hit on mama. What?! Auri approves?! He knows Fennel and it is better than some random stranger jerk, right?! Though, he still doesn’t think he will have any chance with her. Auri soon goes into despair that Glind also knows about this. It’s like he is the last one to know. So gonna call him and beat his ass up? Viola wonders about grandma and it seems Alyssa finds it hard to describe her. Yes, she is a witch and not a monster! However she gives off this mysterious aura as Alyssa remembers her giving some great advice in raising a child. Grandma is a great person who wished happiness for every moment in her life. Then they go over photos of baby Viola. Yeah, let’s reminisce those days. WTF Auri taking it all out on Fennel? You thought Giriko and Luna have it hard trying to care for Viola (little baby doesn’t want her aunties to go but as soon as mama returns, she forgets them and rushes to her!), you should’ve seen her treating Fennel. Yeah, how many times has he withstand her kiddie beatings? Worse, one day walking with her in the street, Viola claimed he was a stranger so super old granny thought he was a kidnapper and beat the sh*t out of him!!! Then Auri talks about Alyssa as a baby. Always sick but yeah, he was still a bad influence on her. As Viola is still a baby in the eyes of the adults, the same can be said for Alyssa in Auri’s eyes. Phoenix commends them for doing a good job and to him, all of them are still babies in his eyes. Uhm, WTF this big galaxy hug? Nice and warm… In the aftermath, the townspeople still mistakes Viola as the mom and Alyssa the child.

Growing Pains: Everybody Loves Alyssa!
There is nothing happier than a dysfunctional family continuing to be a dysfunctional family. It’s the only way that they can stay happy and make us laugh at the same time. I highly doubt things will change because if it would, there’s going to be a hell lot of resistance. Like Alyssa getting a real life partner to settle down with! Oh you bet our Viola will never ever going to allow that even if God has decreed it Himself! So stay healthy and happy via status quo. Everybody wins this way. Yes they do.

Those wishing for some sort of storyline and plot to follow might be disappointed because there is basically none here. In fact, reading the synopsis should already give you a hint on how this series would play out. Unless you’re a newbie in the world of anime. Hey, what do you expect? Viola’s real parents suddenly showing and being the repentant parents they are, want to reclaim Viola back into their fold? And hence the battle of custodies inside and outside of court! Lots of tension and drama as well as confused feelings welling up from both sides of the divide. Uhm… Oh gee… That’s actually kinda possible… I can actually foresee imagine that… But nah! It’s not that kind of anime! Hence it was pretty much expected from my side that the series will mainly be random skits and double that as most of the episodes are divided into 2 separate skits so the funny moments don’t overstay its welcome. Once we’re done with that joke in that particular skit, leave it behind and let’s move on to the next fresh one.

Without an actual storyline to follow, it falls on the characters to deliver the charms and I should say they don’t disappoint. Obviously as the series is of this comedy genre, wacky personalities are to be expected. You’ll cringe and laugh at them but I guess that is how they play out. Most of the characters stay the same from start to finish so once you get to know the character, you can pretty guess how he/she pretty much acts for the rest of the series.

So let’s start off with our main mother and daughter pair, Alyssa and Viola since the series mostly centres around them. Obviously Alyssa is your good natured witch-cum-mom who wants the best for her adopted daughter. Smothered with so much love, probably that contributed to Viola being overly possessive about her mom. Nobody is going to take her away from her beloved mommy! I bet she would even kill just to protect that privilege! But don’t worry, it’s not that kind of anime so nobody is going to die here. Hopefully. Viola may look like a busty mature woman but she has a mind of child and that means she likes all those kiddie stuffs like monsters and robots, sometimes making her a little bit like a tomboy. But that’s okay, no matter what Viola turns out, Alyssa will always love her, right? Not as much as Viola loves mommy… I hope the irregular witch won’t turn into an irregular b*tch… Lolicon lovers out there better not fawn too much over Alyssa if you know what is good for you! Viola will make sure you turn into teen or MILF fetish!!!

I wonder if Phoenix is the pet mascot of the series considering how cartoonish his looks. But yeah, if he was drawn in a surreal form even if it is for comical purposes, I don’t think we can handle how majestic he looks! Anyway, being a familiar of Viola, he helps take care of the household and sometimes provides advice since as some legendary bird, he has lived long enough. I don’t remember how Koala was summoned and before I knew it, it was already part of the family? Did I miss something somewhere? Hey, at least better than their ‘father’. Oh you know, that clay person whom Viola created just in case mommy needs a daddy. It’s like they call him one moment but the next second, oh sorry you’re not needed anymore. Yeah, some sort of running joke…

Then there is Fennel who wants to be Alyssa’s lover but no prizes in guessing who is always cock blocking him. That’s right, it’s often the father who is not amused when his daughter is dating some boy. But in this case, the daughter is the one stepping up to that role and not going to let any man (not just you Fennel) to get an inch closer to mommy dearest. Yeah, it’s like she has monopoly rights over mom. Well, keep trying. But I’m old enough and a veteran to know how it will all turn out. Then you have the lonely orc Glind who just wants to find a girl to date and Alyssa’s crazy witch pals. Thank goodness Luna doesn’t come around often or her BDSM fetish might be a bad influence on Viola. Perhaps the character you don’t want to mess with is Lira because she’s really a fierce woman and her muscles are tell-tale signs she is stronger than you pipsqueaks. This woman doesn’t hesitate to get violent if she’s not amused with you. Beating you up is always an option! Just ask her henpecked husband and her son whom we have never seen his face. I guess every family has their own different ways of upbringing. Different strokes for different folks. If you need daughter-who-is-not-impressed-with-father trope, Auri’s your guy. Better late in finding out the truth rather than never, no? It’s a wonder with all the bad influence, thank goodness Alyssa didn’t turn out like him. Even at such a young age, she can feel disgust with his methods.

While it may be surprising that this series considerably has a small amount of main and supporting casts, the rest are mainly guest characters and only appear for a single episode before they are never heard of again. From those butt fairies to that insomniac sandman and a certain tsundere b*tch. Yes, more quirky characters to laugh at and although they won’t be appearing anymore (or rather as often), I bet this doesn’t mean that we would hear the last of them. The most memorable one being Anna and the butt fairies’ episode because that was really heart-warming and touching in the end. And you thought this entire series was going to be slapstick all the way, huh? And yes, don’t judge a book by its cover!

Art and animation are pretty standard but with the colouring and hues vividly bright and colourful, one might mistake this to be targeted for younger audiences. Especially Phoenix’s design that is just so cartoonish (don’t forget those jinn eels too) and so out of place if you compared to the rest. But of course when you have Luna’s BDSM servants, fairies that look like butts and a perverted nurse, it is anything for little kids. Don’t be fooled by Alyssa’s cute loli looks. Unless you’re a lolicon… Then better watch out because Viola is going to get you!!! This anime is done by A-Real and I don’t blame you if you haven’t heard of them. Aside from Kenka Banchou Otome, they only animated the dreaded Urawa No Usagi-san and its even more dreadful sequel, Musashino as well as that sleazy Iya Na Kao Sare Nagara Opantsu Misete Moraitai. Yes. That pantsu show. But don’t expect to see any panty slips from Alyssa. Because Viola is going to gorge your eyes out and smash your brains flat if you do so!!!

Voice acting, it seems there are a bunch of recognizable seiyuus. The one taking the cake is Aoi Koga as Alyssa. Well, if you know how Kaguya-sama sounds like in her scatterbrain mode, this is what Alyssa feels like. Kaguya-sama 24/7. No kidding. Then there are Nana Mizuki as Viola, Junichi Suwabe as Auri, Romi Paku as Lira, Daisuke Ono as Glind, Yui Horie as Hip, Yuuki Kaji as Ketts and Miyuki Sawashiro as grandma. I was sure Kana Hanazawa as Lady but WTF it’s not? Instead she’s the narrator and Kotono Mitsuishi was the voice of Lady. Are you sure they did not mix up that one?! I’m pretty cocksure it’s Kana Hanazawa’s voice as Lady! What do you mean it’s not! Yeah, she’s the narrator alright… Somehow evading my radar is Aki Toyosaki as Sheeta and to my ultimate surprise, Ikue Ohtani is Koala?! I wouldn’t have guessed it in a million years since Koala has no spoken dialogue and only huffing and growling. And so Pikachu and Chopper has become a poisonous koala!!! OMG!!!

The rest of the casts are Takaya Hashi as Phoenix (Inuarashi in One Piece), Takayuki Kondou as Fennel (Oishi in Prince Of Tennis), Katsuyuki Konishi as Pond (Fuegoleon in Black Clover), Akira Sekina as Luna (Kuon in Tenkuu Shinpan), You Taichi as Giriko (Anzu in Prison School), Minako Kotobuki as Kicla (Tsumugi in K-ON!), Rika Nagae as Anna (Mitsuha in Rougo Ni Sonaete Isekai De 8-manmai No Kinka Wo Tamemasu) and Takaya Kuroda as Sandmann (Dagger In Show By Rock). As we all veterans know about Nana Mizuki’s powerful vocals and she herself has been a successful singer, therefore it is only right for her to show off her talented singing chops via opening theme, Sugar Doughnuts. Personally, I only find this rather okay. I mean, this piece feels a lot like a jazzy fanfare and some funk in it. But the ending theme is weirder. If you are familiar with the comical nature of Hamefura’s first season’s opening theme, it is somewhat the same vibes here. Because yes, it is Angela singing Welcome. It has this silly carnival atmosphere feel to it so it’s only apt for our characters doing their cute dance to match the liveliness of the song.

Overall, I find it quite a funny and entertaining series, tickling my bones and in some ways also creeping me out. Oh you know, Viola being super obsessive about her mom! If you can look past that, it’s all in the name of comedy, right? Well, I don’t think it will be anything near funny for Viola… But this anime should be right up your alley if you want something light-hearted to watch (don’t mind the slapstick comedy like Viola and Lira violence) rather than following some convoluted plot that has more than 100 episodes, a handful of zany characters then this should be a recommended series of the season to watch. Season of the (dekoboko) witch? Uhm, Tweeny witches maybe? Sorry for lame witch puns… Hey, I’m not trying to steal Alyssa’s heart or anything, okay!

Mahoutsukai Reimeiki

27 November, 2022

At first there was something that felt familiar to Mahoutsukai Reimeiki but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Turns out that it is actually a spinoff sequel to Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou No Sho. So that’s why. Well, I suppose it is better than keeping that Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou No Sho title because it once confused and trolled the hell out of me back then. Yeah. With new characters and plot, old ones like Zero and Youhei will only make cameo appearances and become secondary characters. Not sure if I am okay with that (since Youhei was ultimately a pretty cool character in my books) but I shouldn’t jump into hasty conclusions first without watching the whole thing.

Episode 1
Saybil is summoned by the headmaster of Wenias Royal Magic Academy. Many think he will be expelled for he is the worst student and the one with the lowest grade. Outside the headmaster’s door, he sees Loux Krystas trying to force her way in to see Albus. She tries to threaten Saybil’s life to get her to open up but Holdem puts a stop to this charade. Albus finally opens up and is shocked to see Loux here. A bit of history how the Church and witches were at war until 5 years ago. Though, there are still witch hunts in the south these days. But the main war happened 10 years ago when Thirteen tried to end persecution of witches and created a place for them. It led to the world being aware of magic and the world’s view greatly changed on witches. Thirteen would eventually be executed by Albus herself. Although magic is being integrated into everyday life, in the south Albus has created a village for witches where they are still not treated equally. Hence she is sending Saybil there as a mage. If after 3 years he is deemed as unfit, he will have his memories erased. Loux will gladly accompany Saybil there. Oh, the witch that was supposed to accompany Saybil? Loux swapped jobs with her! Loux’s goal is after all The Grimoire of Zero. Albus will not allow her to get her hands on that text although she can arrange to meet its author. Before Saybil and Loux begin their journey, they are joined by Hort, a student senior who will be accompanying them on their journey. There is also Kudo but he is not travelling with them and escorting a couple of their mages himself just to avoid his grades getting docked. Saybil and Hort learn about Loux’s living staff, Ludens. It eats anybody’s magic who touches it, causing them to die eventually. Loux is immune due to the pact she made with it so when her magic is fully depleted, Ludens still keeps her alive.

The journey begins and somehow Saybil has motion sickness in this slow carriage ride? They camp for the night as Hort prides on her smile because she claims it is easier to get people to like her. Saybil reveals he has no memories prior to the academy. That is why he must succeed in this task for having his memories taken away, it means he’ll be left with nothing. Also, he cannot cast proper magic. Well, he can but he cannot control them and it will go berserk. Meanwhile a couple of witch hunters sighted a certain lizard and plan to crush him just to give warning there will be no peace between the Church and witches. Next morning at their inn, Loux and co hear Kudo’s escorts complain how he ran away by himself after they were attacked by bandits. But Loux smells something different. Nothing of theirs got stolen and yet they would fetch a higher price than that lizard. It could mean Kudo sensed witch hunters and drew their attention away from them. Loux will go rescue him herself and wants the rest to stay put since they are weak and will likely be a deadweight. Of course the duo will not stay put for long as Hort uses her tracking magic to track Loux down. As for those guys, they’re not willing to risk expulsion for a lizard. Jerks. Saybil thinks they would’ve agreed had Hort flashed her smile. Then they troll us as she smiles and confess that she likes Saybil. As a friend. The duo then stumble into Kudo’s tail. A fake one, right?

Episode 2
They also notice footprints. They recognize those belonging to Kudo and Loux. However the third one as Hort believes could be an Arbiter from Dia Ignis, death row inmates hired by the Church to hunt down witches. She has a trauma of meeting one when she was small. She went to a nearby village to visit a friend but an Arbiter killed them all for being witches. Hort lied that she isn’t one so she could escape. While the logic is to turn back, Saybil thinks it is only right to save a friend. He believes Hort wouldn’t have run had her friend was still alive. Kudo has stumbled into many traps while escaping. His luck runs out when he stumbles into Tyrant. Finding him an amusing creature, he wants his men to bring the cage. This traumatizes Kudo as he doesn’t want to go back there again. From young he was treated as a freak show, his limbs chopped off just because it can grow again. He laments he cannot protect others if he cannot protect himself. When Albus suggested an escort, he declined one. Albus assured him that as long as he is a student of this academy, she will not abandon him. Kudo wonders if he had gone with Loux, would she have protected him. As Kudo tries to resist, Tyrant gets fed up and will just kill him instead. Just in time, Loux is here to save the day. He recognizes Ludens and is now super cautious. He is out of options until he hears Saybil and Hort’s voice looking for them. Trying to help but now they’re dead weights. Tyrant grabs Saybil and threatens to kill him. Although Loux will kill him if he kills any one of them, he wants Loux to give Ludens to him in exchange for Saybil’s life. Since she disagrees, he is fine with everyone dying together. Loux then changes her mind and drops the staff. As Tyrant forces Saybil to get it, he sounds out to Hort and tells her to drop the act. He reveals she is a spy for the anti-witch faction.

Hort goes into trauma mode. Short flashback on her young life. She grew horns on her head and others thought she was a child of a demon. Against her will, they sawed it off claiming it was for her own good. She was then made to work for the Church and then a mission to infiltrate the magic academy. Because Albus treats her nice, she really wanted to graduate as a mage. Then she was put on this mission and had a bad feeling. So she tried to delay their travel and throwing off their schedule and hoped Kudo’s group would get attacked. But she never imagined Tyrant would be here and it jeopardized everything. In the end, she betrayed everyone. Of course Saybil doesn’t blame her. Confused at how he can smile at a traitor like her, Hort then uses her magic to attack Tyrant but it proves futile. As Tyrant is about to kill her, Saybil decides to grab Ludens even if it costs him his life. Against Loux’s wish, Ludens goes out of control. In the aftermath, the surrounding vicinity is decimated. Saybil is still alive. Loux very mad and scolds everyone. Even Ludens is not spared. It seems Saybil has unlimited magic. This is the reason why he has trouble controlling it. Since Saybil’s magic exceeded what Ludens could siphon away, hence that.

Episode 3
Hort feels weird that nobody is mad at her for being a spy. She tells Saybil about her horns and why she is working for the Church, supposedly to cleanse her tainted soul. They talk about how if a beast warrior and witch die and the former’s soul has nowhere to go, it will enter the witch’s bloodline and become her descendent, a part-beast and part-human. Over time, that power dilutes so the beast soul’s influence weakens while taking more of a human form. Hence Hort and Kudo are beastfallens and she is glad for Saybil because he doesn’t speak ill of them. As thanks she gives him a little kiss. It is discovered those guys Kudo escorted were the ones who leaked info. Now they will face the consequences but it doesn’t matter to our little gang. Loux will have Kudo regenerate his limbs and with Saybil’s unlimited power, that is possible. Trolling us they have to kiss to do that? No to gay beastiality! The healing is a success and after a little party, they continue their journey. Stopping by at the next town, Saybil learns from Kudo why he wants to become a mage. The Church Knights have been rebranded as Church & Mage Army after peace was made with the witches and a beastfallen unit was created. But only the top of the cream can join. Kudo being a weakling, his only shot at it is by becoming a mage. He is adamant of becoming one because during his days as a freak show, when a crazy witch appeared to destroy the world and caused destruction, he was trapped in some rubble but a knight found and saved him when he was not obliged to. Kudo wanted to be like him and made the army his goal.

The journey resumes and it went smoothly since Loux knows the people at the stops and the best places to camp. She even teaches them some hunting methods for fun. As this journey is going to end, Loux lets them know her excitement to meet the owner of the Grimoire of Zero. As a witch who has lived so long, as she does not need food, sleep or even love/romance to produce offspring, all that is left for her is to seek thrill and have fun. That’s why she relishes seeing all sorts of events even if one puts the world in danger. Of course recently she learnt it is fun travelling with others and doing so with them was really fun. Suddenly a young boy, Laios tells them to hide because somebody will kill them if they find them. Using his magic to shield them, but this is only temporary as that guy, Youhei sniffs them out. Seems he knows about the trio in the field programme. Loux handles him and has her students escape with the kid. Youhei will not go after them because turning his back on her would be a mistake. However he won’t fight her either as he knows he cannot win. Loux is surprised Youhei knows about Ludens and the field programme. He just needs Laios to return to the village, that’s all. He tells her to go after her students and is confident they’ll meet again.

Episode 4
At the village, they meet the priest, Shinpu. He claims the control of this village changed hands 2 years ago when the previous witch surrendered to an invader without a fight and vanished. Ever since, no one has been able to oppose her. Then they realize they are all troubled students who got sent here and it could mean going back to the academy, expulsion awaits. Kudo thinks of getting help from the Church & Mage Army but Shinpu believes they’re not going to risk losing 1000 soldiers over a strong witch. Especially if this is just trouble in a witch village. Shinpu and Loux engage in some suspicions talk as she suspects him of sharing info from the Church with the witch. Shinpu hints about the best way is to kill anything suspicious but Loux has other ideas. Laios returns to his father, Uls. Laois explaining he is the only kid in this village and a witch casted a spell on him so everyone would like him. As Uls guides them to the house they’ll be staying, there are life sized straw dolls hanging from the roof for those who lived here. This is to stop people from trying to run. Later Loux thinks they should go kill the witch and Albus while at it since she lied to them. Because of there’s no supervising witch, her job can’t end. Hort thinks of getting the Church & Mage Army to help but Saybil thinks they should do it themselves to prevent the whole place from turning into a battlefield. He is confident with his unlimited magic, the rest can cast as many spells they want. Kudo is not happy because he is implying to die fighting in a losing battle. Saybil notes during Tyrant’s attack and when he touched Ludens, it made him realize he was not afraid to die. This does not sit well with Hort since she was trying to tell him not to die. She runs away in tears so Saybil gets a lecture about friendship. Hort just doesn’t want him to die like a dog simply because they’re friends.

As Hort prays at the church, a little girl Lilly tries to comfort her but with Shinpu back, she is sent scurrying back home. Hort realizes too late from the symbol of Shinpu’s stick that he is from Dia Ignis. He doesn’t blame her for betraying the Church since she spent 4 years at the academy. He traps her and is going to have a long talk. When Saybil cannot find Hort, he goes back to get Loux’s help to trace her. Looks like she is in this cave. When blood is spotted on the ground, they know it is a trap but Loux will still push forward. However Kudo will not take this risk and leaves. Despite Loux’s motivation to be brave and valiant, Kudo knows his limits. He is not strong and doesn’t want to die a stupid death. He doesn’t care if he gets expelled. But on the way out he bumps into Youhei who thinks he has deserted his comrades. Care to join him? Because he can also get him into the army and can even enter a witch’s blood contract with him. But when Kudo asks about Hort, Youhei claims he killed and ate her. Kudo rejects him so Youhei goes off to kill his buddies. But Kudo will not allow that and is going to fight him. Loux asks Saybil why he want to save Hort. Because she’s his friend. He’ll do it even if it goes against Loux’s orders. Oh heck, he’ll save her too if she’s in the same position. Saybil and Loux are ambushed by Shinpu. After he takes Ludens, he locks them in a room. So that witch before them is Zero?

Episode 5
Zero mocks Loux as an amateur witch. Zero claims in order to take them from Albus, she has gone great lengths to take this village for herself. She wants Saybil to join her and nobody will hurt him. However he refuses to do so and doesn’t accept Zero as part of his memories. Loux kisses Saybil to absorb some of his magic. This allows her to fire back a great one at Zero. Too bad she neutralizes it easily. Remember, all magic were created from her! Now Zero will unleash her payback. And uhm, paper confetti? Zero claims she is the witch who will supervise them in this field programme. Since Saybil is slow on the uptake, Loux tells him they were tested. Here is Hort, happy that Saybil has passed. Seems she was tested too. Had she crossed over to join the witch, she would’ve failed. It seems everyone in the village was just pretending and part of this test. The mastermind behind it all is of course Shinpu. To complete the good news, Youhei brings in Kudo who also passed his. Loux knew it all along because the place they were staying, everything is too brand new despite claims of not being occupied for years. Albus receives a letter that her students have passed. She is overjoyed with this news because last year not one passed. Now she sets her target to capture Tyrant alive since he hurt her students. Over the village party, Zero explains this test is to see if students were virtuous or not. Failing ones will be expelled and that is what they sought of them since their powers are too great. An exceptional mage who is swayed to the path of evil will destroy the world. Zero can see the greatness they will become if they continue their practice their magic. As part of the training, they are to open a store each where the villagers can seek their help. They have a few days to think what kind of store they want to open. When Saybil asks Zero if she took him into the academy, she tells him it’s alright if he doesn’t remember.

That night, a knight on a white dragon, Heath arrives to give letters to Saybil, Hort and Kudo. It seems the letters approve them of using their full magic powers without any restraint. This feels like full authorization to engage in battle. Kudo goes up to Heath and wonders if he still remembers him. As one who saved him from that trapped cage, of course. Kudo wonders if he has a chance to join the army. Heath sounds pessimistic. Only because he isn’t in charge of recruitment but views him a possible valuable asset to his squad. So keep up the good work. When the trio get back, they feel sad thinking that Loux will leave since her escort mission is over. While that is true, she will only do so after reading all the books in this village. That will take about 3 years. Hence she will be staying for the time being and will help them get better. As long as it entertains her, she’s up for it. Time for a big group hug! Later Loux talks to Zero alone and can tell she is suffering from some magic depletion disease. That is why Saybil is like God sent. Zero continues to reveal bits of Saybil’s past. Because of his exceptional power, a witch targeted him. His mom was killed before his eyes but the witch perished via magic overload. This trauma caused Saybil to seal his own memories and led to him experiencing all sorts of oppression. Seeing how deep this goes, Zero thought it would be best to give him a new lease of life at the academy. After all, he has no memories so he can make a clean start. However with his great magic being unstable on occasions, the reason she also sought his expulsion. Loux wonders why she is trying to control his life. That’s because Saybil is Zero’s nephew. And this means his father is Thirteen! We all remember the guy who started to war on the world just to create a world for witches? Yeah, that same guy who also stole Zero’s grimoire.

Episode 6
It’s been 2 months. Saybil is running a magic supply shop and he hardly leaves the house. This doesn’t impress Loux because at this rate he won’t learn anything and will fall behind. Worse, she finds it appalling that he is doing Hort’s laundry. She gets agitated and furious of how dense he is, not knowing the implication of it all. Loux then forces Saybil to go pick some tea leaves in the forest. He meets Laios who will help gather some. But they get lost. Luckily Laios recognizes mice that belong to Lilly so they are guided back to the village. Shinpu invites Saybil into his chapel and has Lilly make a decent meal for him. Saybil then sees Lilly’s true form, a mouse. Shinpu also lectures Saybil of heading somewhere dangerous without knowing it because he almost went to some bees’ territory. After Saybil leaves, he stumbles into Hort whose clothes is a bit bloodied. She explains it belongs to Youhei. They were patrolling the forest after receiving reports that monsters were trampling the vegetation. They were attacked by wolves but since Hort was too slow in her incantation, Youhei fought them off and Hort’s magic hit him. Hort feels useless and doesn’t think she deserves to be a mage since Youhei was mad at her. Loux then brings Saybil to Zero trying to heal Youhei’s wounds. Zero kisses Saybil to suck some of his magic to completely heal the wounds. While Hort won’t be expelled, Youhei being mad at her as a lesson because there’ll be a next time. Because he isn’t such a nice guy who will lecture those he won’t intend to pair up again. Loux is worried that Saybil might be falling behind but Youhei doesn’t mind. He is fine the way he is and if he doesn’t want to study magic, so be it. Zero adds that even if Kudo and Hort are advancing, it doesn’t necessarily mean Saybil needs to run at the same speed. Later Loux privately talks to Zero about just taking just a little of Saybil’s magic because if he is running a shop providing magic, it will not be a crime. Zero doesn’t want to exploit Saybil and even though his magic is unlimited, who knows one day the well will dry up. Loux notes at this rate she will wither and rot away. Zero does not mind it and prefers this way. To age and die with the one she loves than the opposite. Holdem is on his way to inspect the village and looks like a captured Tyrant is being brought along too.

Episode 7
Kudo also has his fair share of problems. He was trying to heal several people with an infectious disease but collapsed halfway and had to be brought back. The trio reflect on their abilities and what they must do. They go to see Zero but she will give Hort a special lesson to learn to control her magic. But during that lesson, Zero runs out of magic and collapses. Saybil tries to transfer his magic but it is not working. Maybe through the lips? As he brings her home, Zero notes the medicine book he is holding. Despite being effective if you follow it exactly, yet to the author they’re still defective. She hints it is his father who wrote it. Later Saybil joins Laios to gather herbs in the forest. Suddenly WTF this Corona virus ball thingy starts shooting spikes?! Both get injured but Laios gets a fatal one through his chest. A weakened Saybil carries him back for help. However he thinks he can’t go on further and desperate calls for Loux’s help. Her voice tells him not to give up and trudge on because Zero and Youhei are on their way. Once Loux also arrives, she gives her blood to Zero as requested as Zero starts her healing. Laios is healed but both witches collapsed due to loss of magic. Then they discuss about that monster believed to be called Remnants of Disaster. The spikes it launches will suck blood and then sprout more while awaiting more prey. It was created during the disaster in the north and even with the demons gone, they continue to multiply. For one to apply here in the south, it means somebody let it loose here. As Youhei goes to see Shinpu, he stumbles into Holdem. They discuss that there might be someone catching and selling the Remnants of Disaster. They’re going to leave the village to find more info. But wouldn’t this leave this village defenceless? I guess those witches aren’t enough for the time being. Youhei dares Holdem to stay back as defence. However Zero wants to come and despite Youhei’s protest, the rest agree so hallelujah to democracy.

Episode 8
Holdem will now be in charge looking after the village but Saybil and co are just suspicious of him. Of course Loux believes there is another reason for all of this but Holdem changes the topic to have Loux take care of the Remnants of Disaster. Doing so, he’ll see to it that Loux will be allowed to borrow the Grimoire of Zero. Uls talks to Saybil and despite knowing it is not his fault, wants him to stay away from Laios. Saybil promises to become stronger so they can hang out again. Suddenly Saybil gets kidnapped by Tyrant. This prompts traumatic memories of his mom’s death. Before she died, she told him to stay away from the witch with the same eyes as his as she’ll take away everything he has. Then the witch came in to look for Saybil and threatened to kill mom. Saybil came out of his hiding but the witch still decapitated her. Then she tried to steal his magic but he overflowed more into her body, causing her to melt and die in the most grotesque way. Hort and Kudo are haphazardly riding their way to save Saybil. They manage to free him but all still lose since they are indecisive about killing him. As Loux picks Remnants of Disaster, she finds Holdem passed out on the ground. She hears from him that Uls was telling Hort and Kudo about Saybil being kidnapped. Before he knew it, he passed out. Loux isn’t so surprised, though. Isn’t this whole thing a trap set up by him?! The only thing Loux didn’t count on is that Tyrant is in on this.

Before the young ones get decimated, Tyrant gets sliced by Shinpu. Don’t worry, he won’t kill and all this dismemberment can be restored via magic. With the rest arriving and Holdem being busted for knowing Tyrant, time for him to spill the truth. It seems the academy made a deal with Tyrant to spare his life if he could bring back a student to the academy. Hence this isn’t a test for the students but an inspection to see if the village is able to protect them. This forces them to admit the village has serious defence issues. This means it will be impossible for them to protect every inch of it when it comes down to it due to lacking manpower. Holdem then suggests using Tyrant as extra manpower if they so needed. However Hort is against this because if he can betray the Church, there is no telling that he may betray them too. Uhm, did Hort also betrayed the Church? Zero explaining about witch hunts and all, she understands those who want revenge. As Tyrant has been ordered to serve this village to atone his sins, she has Hort consider his execution. If she goes ahead with it, Shinpu says she must also execute him for he has killed many under the orders of the Church. Even Loux as well since Ludens has taken many witches’ lives. Now it has come to this, Hort will have Tyrant live in Youhei’s bar and she will keep a constant watch on him. Oh well, better than having him killed, right?

Episode 9
Saybil talks to Hort despite he has his memories back, he feels nothing has changed. He asks about love. Because Loux says she likes him. What do you expect her to answer?! So as she tries to give advice, she asks the first person he thinks when he is dying. Loux? Then he must be in love with her. So is Hort going to be his advisor for love? Saybil then goes to talk to Zero about his regained memories. She reveals more about her brother Thirteen who is also Saybil’s father. He is the kind of person who would burn the world for her. Thirteen must have realized the potential of obtaining a child with unlimited magic. That’s why Saybil’s mom took him and ran. Though, she blames herself for many of the misfortune that he has suffered. Saybil is also worried about supplying magic now in fear that he might overload his clients and kill them. Zero trains him how to control it. Loux and Hort arrive too late as Kudo’s place has been attacked. Hort thinks Tyrant is the cause and to unhand this young kid whom they found infected in the forest prior. Upon releasing him, the kid attacks but Loux anticipates this and captures him. It is believed he is a pawn used by the Church. They are visited by Lady Hearthful who runs a school in town. They weigh in on his role, because the anti-witch faction doesn’t know much about this village, they sent him in to see how he is dealt with. Hearthful also advises Tyrant about his behaviour because it is better to learn some manners and etiquette to make less enemy. She also warns acting fearsome will get him nowhere since nobody in this village will fear him. Youhei suggests torturing the kid for more info and since Kudo and Hort are against this, the only way left is to get Shinpu to do the interrogation. He asks the questions and despite the kid doesn’t answer them directly, because of his body reaction and all, Shinpu has his answers. Now that they have some info, Shinpu also cannot exclude the possibility that he was supplied false info. It is very highly likely that someone at the top of the Church who is presenting themselves as a peace faction but is actually supporting the extremists. While it might seem no movement has been made, it is believed the move is already made in secret. They think to postpone sending this kid back to Wenias. Hort sees Tyrant helping kids make fish traps at Hearthful’s school. Despite he is being honest being a killer, the kids don’t fear him since he says he won’t kill them. Hence insufficient grounds for them to fear him. Hearthful wants Hort to accompany them on a fishing trip tomorrow but she still has trauma of Tyrant killing her best friend.

Episode 10
Kudo takes Kady (that traitor kid) to have a meal with Lilly. Kady laments he can’t die a hero and his name go down in history so Kudo tells him off about his criteria on what he views as evil. Since Kady considers witches and beastfallens as evil, Kudo surprises him that Lilly is a beastfallen. Her cooking is delicious, no? Feel free to puke it up if you think otherwise. Later, Saybil confesses he loves Loux! What gives?! So, love as a teacher-student? Nope. Love as in he wants to marry her! Definitely gave Loux the biggest surprise of the day. Hort has to tell him about love being a negotiation game. But sorry, you can’t tell someone you just confessed to to forget it. We see Kady’s flashback that he has been brutally trained by the Church to kill their enemies. Kady is invited by Hort to join Hearthful and the kids at the river. He is amazed they can still interact with Tyrant like normal despite being a traitor. They talk about trust like Kudo who still doesn’t trust anybody especially Hort. Basically, trust being something that is earned. Saybil tests his magic potion on Ludens before telling his reasons why he likes her (as advised by Hort). I don’t know, it sounds cringe but kudos to Loux for keeping her composure. Saybil then tells her about Kady joining the rest at the river. Now we see a flashback on Tyrant. Damn, he looks so mature even for a kid?! His father told him to make traps but was beaten up for it. Because of his skills in making them, a noble hired him to make traps as sports for slaves he released into the wild to be hunted. Those who escaped will be freed but those caught will be killed. Ever since hiring Tyrant, his success rate has been 100% and it has been no fun. But soon Tyrant is captured by the Church and given a deal to die now or live in agony. Tyrant talks to Hearthful about coming to a witch village despite a witch destroying her home. She puts it that even if a hunter kills her child, she will not hate humans. She might even become one and teach her child how to hunt without killing. When Kady starts acting weird, he soon turns into a monster. It is believed he didn’t bring a single Remnants of Disaster. Tyrant holds him down while Hort chants her spell to seal him. It worked but Kady breaks free. Tyrant tries to hold it back but gets killed. Hort then uses all her magic to burn Kady. Once Kady dies, Kudo heals and revives Tyrant. But out from Kady’s corpse are little bug monsters. Feeding time. They have to run but Tyrant can’t since he lost too much blood. Oh, they don’t have too. They just need to duck and lie low since Loux is here to feed Ludens snacks. A clean sweep.

Episode 11
The trio lament they can’t save Kady as they pay their tributes at his grave. Soon, Heath arrives to tell the trio they have orders to return to Wenias since this village will turn into a battlefield soon. They then go talk to Zero about not wanting to leave because if there is going to be a war, they’ll need all the help they can get. Zero warns of expulsion but Saybil would rather drop out than follow such orders. He even has a plan to make this war a defensive one. His plan is to disable the enemies than kill them. He has made some magic potions although it is still unfinished. With Loux making a fuss that she likes this village too, Zero will call Albus and see what she has to say about this. She is impressed with this idea of a war where no one dies and gives them the green light. Saybil reveals to Hort and Kudo that his father is Thirteen but they don’t care about that and treat him the same. The children are treating Tyrant to their treats as thanks for saving them. Tyrant then talks to Hearthful. Despite sounding he wants to torment them, she believes he is in love with her. She doesn’t find it surprising because when you’re in love, you’ll find the importance of protecting it. Then he goes to talk to Hort and hints that he can kill those he loves even when ordered to. That is how he is trained. She acknowledges that scums like him can protect others and this messed her perception of him. This might have him suffer his whole life under the weight of everything he took but if living makes him suffer, then keeping alive is worth it. She will even protect his back.

Loux talks to Shinpu about the Remnants of Disaster that ate through Kady’s stomach. Had she not destroyed it, it would have multiplied infinitely and continue to consume others. This raises the question if the Church extremists intend to take themselves out along with the witches. Since no one is foolish enough to spread a plague without a cure, then whoever knows how to stop it is also the one who spreads it. Cal reports to Faeria about the Church extremists marching down towards Zero’s village. She is worried many will die and wonders if things will be okay if she leaves a single medic here as proxy in her absence. She writes a letter for Albus. Albus is talking to Torres about the Remnants of Disaster seeds found in dead bodies. They were taken back to the Church who then passed them secretly to the extremists. The question is when and where they will use them. With Cal arriving to hand over Faeria’s emergency message, Albus wants him to head to the north to call back the mage commander. Cal is worried since he still wants to live. Albus assures him that he will be protected. Final briefing after setting up all the traps that won’t kill. Worst scenario is that they may end up massacring. Saybil then requests Zero to take in as much magic from him. He wants her to protect the future of all mages even if his own future is ruined. Saybil transfers so much magic that even Zero can’t handle it and pulls out. But Saybil now know what it feels like to have less magic. Zero then bestows him the name of the Abyss Witch. While his friends are happy for his achievement, Zero reminds them if they fail, all of them will get expelled. What a way to rain on their parade.

Episode 12
As the soldiers march on, they fall into various traps. However soon after, they get healed completely. They soon realize that this is a warning from witches. Hence they decide to make good of this blessing and retreat. However those continuing to soldier on are beastfallen mercenaries. When Shinpu and Youhei realize Lilly is not among them, they hurry to her rescue. Thank goodness they are fast enough before the beastfallen boss kills her. So while the duo make a massacre out of the pack, another group of beastfallen mercenaries have reached the village. But thanks to Tyrant’s traps, many experience the pain before being completely healed. They are given a choice to evaluate their next move. Youhei is having trouble fighting the beastfallen boss and requests Zero’s help. Thus she unleashes a horde of zombies to finally take down the mother. With the beastfallen mercenaries retreating with their tails between their legs, nearby Albus and Torres have organized it all as a big show for rich people and nobles to watch. A great success. Suddenly Remnants of Disaster attack the place and start eating up everyone. The big cardinal, Ideamor claims he has a ward to keep everyone safe. But this could all be a ploy to smoke the perpetrator out as Albus points out how he could create one without knowing the enemy’s source. The Remnants of Disaster then eats everyone but as you would come to expect, they’re all eaten away by Ludens and they are just models created by Loux. She can tell his plan that he has made his soldiers eat seeds of Remnants of Disaster. So that when they flee, they will be unleashed and he can blame it on witches. He forces him to eat one that was in Kady’s stomach. Do that and she’ll forgive his sins. Wow, Loux more powerful than the pope now? In the aftermath, this incident became a farce as the people laugh at how they couldn’t subdued a single village despite being a large scare military operation. Saybil, Hort and Kudo finally graduate as Albus gives them a new mission. But first, they return to the village and say goodbye to everyone. Zero giving Thirteen’s book to Saybil. So aunty not coming along with them? Now the trio head north to the Forbidden Library to bring back more info on the Remnants of Disaster.

Season Of The Witch
Basically it just took 3 outcasts of an academy to turn the anti-witch faction into a laughing stock for generations to come. Yeah. Best joke ever. Those motherf*ckers looked down upon this puny witchy village and look how hard the door hit them in the backside on their way out of history? Weird. I doubt that those extremists will end here or let this embarrassment slide, but for the time being, they’ll lie low and lick their wounds. This also gives our freshly graduated trio some time to do and explore something else. So, next season when? Not that I am counting on it at any point. Hopefully not. Hope you guessed my sentiments from that one already.

I have mixed feelings for the overall story. The first half of the series seemed interesting. Probably everything was new and were being introduced to the new main characters as well as the predicament they are in. It was all pretty fine and dandy, while I’m not saying it was totally absorbingly interesting that I had my eyes glued to the screen for each passing second, at least it was interesting enough to hold my attention. Then almost at halfway point after Zero and Youhei made their cameo and turned out the whole thing was a trial for them, that is where it started to go downhill. There was really nothing much to it after that, save for the trio doing their internship in the village. Which feels as boring as f*ck if you ask me. So they throw bits and pieces like the revelation Saybil’s past to keep things interesting but I hardly find that would have an impact on my overall sentiments for the series. So for the final stretch, the war feels like a rush because they need to showcase how much our internship trio have grown. Honestly, I don’t see any difference although I’m not supposed to have unrealistic expectations that will achieve some God-like power overnight. Yeah…

Hence I can’t see the direction and plot for this series because like I said, it is mainly the main trio playing internship in the village and that’s basically the main focus for the rest of the series. There isn’t any outright war going on despite there are lots of secret movements and espionage kind of stuff from the Church. It could have been interesting but that would have taken the spotlight away from Saybil and co. Which makes it a lot more confusing when the series reaches its final stretch. So they make it easy with some big war that has the witches losing no casualties and the only thing the enemy lost was their ego and pride. If that isn’t the passing grade with flying colours for graduation, I don’t know what is.

The characters don’t really impress either. I know Saybil is unique and different from many other main characters. Oh wait, I take that back. He is the same like almost any main character if you view him in general. Has a tragic past, possessed some super power and is a dense person. Yeah. Only difference is that he sounds weak and depressed, which makes him look like a pussy and weakling. Can’t blame him after what he went through. But sometimes it gets annoying after a while. While I don’t expect him to change overnight into somebody different, at the end of the day, I still have the same perception of Saybil as he was in the beginning. Then they try to distract us about him being in love. Imagine a person who doesn’t understand the concept of love trying to dish out an emotionless confession. I’m sure Loux is more shocked of this deadpan display than the confession itself. So yeah, Saybil’s only worth is because he has almost seemingly unlimited amount of mana and that’s about it.

Loux is particularly interesting at first because of her lively and spunky nature. Not to mention that accent of hers. She is living life at her very own pace and does what she wants. Sometimes sounding like a spoilt brat and this could become annoying after a while. She sounds like miss smarty pants but then again, this is what she sounds like to a simpleton to me. Why do I have this feeling that she is designed to satisfy lolicons? Yeah, keep trying to peak at that sexy panty crotch area… Then there is Kudo and Hort to round up the main characters. Kudo being a very realistic lizard dude and he just doesn’t want to be seen as weak, that’s why he sometimes acts like he doesn’t care but eventually he does. It must be his running joke each time he gets embarrassed, his face will obviously change colour. So is he a chameleon now? Why do I feel that Hort is there to provide some big boobies fanservice? Was her design taken after a cow? Anyway, I can’t make head or tail about her character. Because they trying to confuse us with some pseudo love with Saybil whatever. In order to give her some sort of purpose, that is why she somewhat becomes Tyrant’s new owner. Also to tell us that she can be a nasty b*tch if she wants to. Don’t mess with those tits.

Speaking of Tyrant, I figure why this series is somewhat disappointing because for one of this genre, there is no main antagonist. It was interesting when the ragtag students encountered a very brutal Tyrant in his hunt. I thought they really killed him off and that’s a shame. Oh well, maybe he wasn’t to be the main antagonist but somebody else who will be more brutal. Then they had to bring him back and now he is all docile and under a leash. Uhm, I don’t know about you but that feels boring? Imagine a merciless killing machine suddenly using his power for good. Well, not that I’m saying that it is a bad thing since people are bound to change if you give them a second chance. But it just feels that he has turned soft ever since he returned. Whatever the case for him, the choice is clear for him if he wants to live. Who the f*ck that Ideamor guy in the end? Feels like he is just the scapegoat needed to bring this season to a closure. It feels so rushed they managed to pinpoint the culprit just for the sake of plot convenience so him being the big bad villain pulling the strings from the shadows, it all feels so meh now. Thirteen is gone so deal with it. Unless somebody resurrects him as a zombie. So this leaves the Church extremists as the baddies but since we don’t see any faces, it feels like they’re fighting an unknown enemy or at least some very generalized foe. As cliché as it may sound if some big boss’ face was known to us so we know whom the heroes will have to or eventually have to deal with, but that’s how it is.

As for the other characters, they don’t fare any better to. Even Zero and Youhei felt quite negligible as it is understandable that they are the main characters no more. Oh heck, even I find Youhei’s tough love policy that makes him a pretty likeable compared to the rest of characters. You may think the Church might be one sh*tty place since we have quite a few Church defectors. Even Shinpu talks in funny riddles although there is some sort of tinge of sadness in what he says. Lilly, uhm, animal mascot fanservice. Laios, uhm, shotacon fanservice. What else more can I say?

Art and animation are pretty standard affair. Looks pretty okay in my books and nothing much to complain. Oh right. That damn bad CGI. Luckily they are reserved for the Remnants of Disaster (not sure if they were employed elsewhere). The only reason I’m going to say that its CGI doesn’t come off as terrible is that perhaps we don’t know how these monsters actually move in real life. Heck, there are none! So I’ll give them the leeway that by watching them move so CGI-like is because that is how they naturally move. Otherwise still terrible CGI. Also, there are some very gruesome and bloody moments. The one taking the cake was Saybil’s mom’s killer melting to death. That was truly haunting.  But otherwise, all those limbs dismemberment and blood gushing out, those are pretty standard affair to veterans like me. Unlike the original series which was done by White Fox, Tezuka Productions (Black Jack, Kanojo Mo Kanojo, Dororo) helmed this spinoff sequel. Not that I can remember or tell the difference at this point.

For the voice acting, I am intrigued with Miho Okasaki as Loux. She gives that brattiness spell to that loli watch. And to think she is the voice of Rimuru from Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken. Come to think of it, she sounds almost like Rimuru, only brattier. Then there is Rie Kugimiya as Laios. Not my first time hearing her voice little boys’ role but certainly it’s rare. Feels like her character is sounding hard trying not to sound tsundere. The only other seiyuus I recognized are Kana Ueda as Faeria and Mai Nakahara as Saybil’s mom. Also, I thought Youhei sounded a bit different than before so true enough, they changed his seiyuu. Now Masaaki Yano helms this white tiger beastfallen. But don’t worry for Zero and Albus as Yumiri Hanamori and You Taichi were retained for their roles respectively. The other casts are Shuuichirou Umeda as Saybil (Izumi in Kawaii Dake Ja Nai Shikimori-san – now I see why both characters sound so weak and gay), Sayumi Suzushiro as Hort (Kei in Kaguya-sama Wa Kokurasetai), Taku Yashiro as Kudo (Ryuuji in Darwin’s Game), Takuya Satou as Tyrant (Alvin in Kono Healer Mendokusai), Masaaki Mizunaka as Shinpu (Diablo in Isekai Maou To Shoukan Shoujo No Dorei Majutsu), Manaka Iwami as Lilly (Teresa in Tada-kun Wa Koi Wo Shinai), Saori Oonishi as Hearthful (Aiz in DanMachi) and Masayuki Katou as Holdem (Demiurge in Overlord).

The opening theme is… OMFG! IT IS ONLY MY RAILGUN! Only it is not!!! Oh damn. That was too close a call. You see, you can definitely tell that Fripside sings Dawn Of Infinity with their typical chaotic techno beat permeating all over. But of all the Only My Railgun spoofs that I have heard (since many of the songs I heard have this similar trademark as well), this is the closest that I have come to identify. Heck, I might not be surprised if this is actually the same song and they just tweaked a few lines and voila! A seemingly new song? I don’t know if I should call it a blatant copycat-cum-rip-off because this one doesn’t impress at it is mostly noisy. Hence, Only My Railgun still remains my favourite till this day. Sorry copycats, you got to do better than that to impress me other than just borrowing a tune. As for the ending theme, Imprinting by Trinity is more of a rock piece. Didn’t like this one either because it is also noisy.

Overall, not a very good sequel spinoff as the plot is all over the place and the main characters feel pretty bland. This makes the original Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou No Sho look way better than this. I might not remember much about that series at this point but my guts tell me that the original definitely fared better than this recent one. Yeah, my brain may have forgotten but the body has not? Weird. Maybe there is some kind of sorcery or magic that eats my memories, huh? Well, you do remember there is a difference between sorcery and magic in this fantasy world’s setting, no? Oh heck, not that I care at this point. They all look the same to me. The choice is clear.

What a misleading title! At first I really thought Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou No Sho was going to be the sequel or at most the prequel to the Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu. Therefore when I was doing my research before the series aired, I was really confused to not find a single thing related to it. The synopsis was also different but it had witches and magic so I really thought this was some sort of prequel that tells of that Satella witch. Nope. Nothing. Could I be Googling it wrong? Even more confusing when I see the main character who has a head of a white tiger. Is this Guin Saga or something?! Man, I was really confused. After watching a couple of episodes into the series, then I realize that both series had nothing to do with each other. Nothing at all. Curse you for giving me a headache and lots of dead brain cells from overthinking! I guess now I understand why some magic spells are so close to each other. Some are just fake to trap you if you’re not careful…

Episode 1
As narrated, 500 years ago the Church waged war against the witches and burnt a Mooncaller witch named Sorena who was beloved by the people. Thus this made all the witches to rise up and fight back and in turn the Kingdom of Wenias hired mercenaries to subjugate them. Although the world knows about sorcery, they are unaware about magic. Apparently they are both different terms. A tiger dude is being hunted by bandits because he is a beastfallen, humans who are born with animal features believed to be instruments of witches’ sorcery. He is also being hunted by witches and is running away from one right now. Till he bumps and spills the soup of a witch girl. She is making a big deal out of it. Till the attack continues. However she easily despatches the witch. Tiger guy runs away faster upon realizing she is a witch. But she knows how to find him perhaps he is making soup? Revenge for spilling hers? He isn’t interested in talking to her until she mentions she can see his human face beneath that beast façade. She briefly explains how beastfallens were created by witches as armies. She could have answered more had not her stomach growl. If she could have some soup… She is looking for her comrade named Thirteen. He left on a journey to look for a book that was stolen. A book which could lead to the destruction of the world. It is the only book and has no copy. He left for so long and had not heard from him so she thought she better look for him too. She wants him to be his guard but he quickly denies because he hates witches. In fact he hates humans too because of his looks, every day has been hell for him.

She offers to turn him into human and to prove her sincerity, she will do up a contract. She will not kill him and will turn him into human once his service ends. She is not afraid and describes his pleasant traits (something his mom used to tell him). He rips the contract and does a blood oath like how mercenaries do. She introduces herself as Zero. However she doesn’t want to know his name and only call her manservants by name. She will call him Youhei (Mercenary). If her real name is found out, she will really make him her manservant. Youhei wakes up to more old dreams of his bloody life. He doesn’t like Zero using him as a body pillow. So warm and fuzzy… They begin their journey to the royal capital, Plasta where she believes Thirteen is looking for the book. She then demonstrates the difference between sorcery and magic. For the former, she draws circles and spews invocations to summon a little demon. For the latter, she uses sacrifices and power of words to draw forth demonic energy. She then busts a witch out of his hiding who was on Youhei’s tail last night. Albus is bent on killing Youhei to get stronger. However Zero is stronger as her magic easily cancels out his. She asks where he learnt magic. From a group of sorcerers of Zero whose holy book was The Grimoire of Zero. Guess what? She is the one who wrote that book! Yeah, I could guess from the name…

Episode 2
As narrated, the Sorcerers of Zero were formed to pursue peace for witches. As their influence grew, so does magic. They have withstood all resistance and witch hunts and even plunge the kingdom into civil war. Albus assumes Zero is on their side and has always thought a man wrote that book. He says the book is in their hideout, the Latette Village on the road to Formicum which he will gladly bring them there. Zero can’t tell him the book is stolen as she won’t know how badly he will react to it. As they take a break, Albus boasts how Sorena’s granddaughter joined the Sorcerers of Zero. Albus finds a ring in the spring and wears it but nothing happens. Maybe his magic is weak? They reach a village and want to stay for the night. The villagers assume they are mercenaries hunting witches. When a grandma is looking panic after losing her ring, before Albus could explain, they think he is a thief. They will not hear any reason and start rounding them up. Because they badmouth Sorena, this makes Albus mad and rebuts their thoughts that Sorena was the one who spread the plague and instead saved the people. As Albus has already given away their identity, the villagers are going to get violent so Youhei takes them and runs away. But the villagers won’t stop. They are going on a witch hunt.

In an abandoned hut, Zero believes that the probability of Sorena spreading plagues was extremely low. As a Mooncaller witch, they trade their sorcery for food and clothing. It would be suicidal for such witches to destroy such symbiotic relationship. As she was using sorcery during the height of the plague, perhaps that is where the misconception arise. Her actions led to anger like Albus. If taking out an entire village just for revenge of a woman is justified, so is witch hunting. Oh, here comes the party now. Instead of risking a fight, they run. Youhei doesn’t want Zero to use the slightest of her magic because it would be even more troublesome if the Church and Knights get on their tail. The villagers know the woods well so the trio are basically trapped. Surprisingly grandma guides them a way out. How did she find them? Using Youhei’s fur. Zero knows that grandma is a witch and has been hiding her powers. After Albus returns her ring, she mentions this was from Sorena. As her own daughter went against her wishes and married a human, Sorena gave the ring to her to do the same. She will have to live as a human and protect her husband and if her friends are witch hunted, she must pretend not to know them. It is sad that Sorena was burnt then and even Youhei admits that Sorena was a good witch. Grandma notes they were about to make the same mistake they did with Sorena and believes a day will come where humans and witches can live together in peace.

Episode 3
As narrated, beastfallens are usually born from human. The Church believes this happened because of a bad deed done in the past life. Despite being hated in society, their superior physical abilities make them highly valuable on the battlefield. At the same time their blood and heads fetch a high price among sorcerers. The trio are now outside the walls of Formicum. Youhei can get pass since he is a mercenary undertaking a mission to hunt witches. But what about those kids? Zero says they’re his sex slaves! And with that, they got into Formicum. Say, doesn’t this city’s name sound kinda dirty too… Before they go anywhere, Youhei wants Zero to get new clothes. She never thought of getting any since she isn’t aware of human etiquette. When Zero takes out a bunch of gems, Youhei tells her to hide it. She views him as a good man since he could have just taken it all. At the clothes shop, Zero strips naked to try on outfits until Youhei had to throw her into the changing room for decency. The shopkeeper is so happy to see loli tits? So happy that he wants her old clothes and smells it like a pervert… Now that they are looking for a place to stay, it is either full or only serves humans. You can’t blame humans for fearing beastfallens because sometimes they have this sudden impulse to eat humans. Like one happening right now. Youhei punches the bear dude away. The latter claims he doesn’t have that impulse and was just trying to scare a slave wandering in here. A wolf guy then comes to claim his slave. He lets them know of a pricey place that accepts beastfallens before leaving.

Late into the night, Youhei sneaks out but Zero knows about it and tails him. She gets angry and then even more when she gets drunk, blaming him that he was going to enjoy the night life without her. Wolf guy is also here. He smells Zero and wants to make a trade with Youhei. This witch for 3 of his witches. He claims he is hiding them from the Church. Youhei doesn’t accept since Zero is his employer. Wolf guy will be waiting if he changes his mind. Of course the duo can tell his slave girls aren’t witches and just normal humans. Later Youhei sneaks into his home to set them free but is caught red handed. After all that talking, it is decided that they duel and the winner gets all the women. Since Zero agrees as she believes Youhei will never lose, there you have it. Eventually Youhei wins and sets the slaves free. Youhei wonders if normal humans are treated like witches like those slaves. Zero says many humans have been burnt at the stakes during witch hunts. Only witches can tell witches apart. Next morning, Albus’ uproar wakes the duo up since he sees Zero sleeping on Youhei’s warm fur. Youhei isn’t surprised anymore since this always happens. And besides, Youhei belongs to Zero. At least to her.

Episode 4
Zero helps Youhei wash his back outside. A few kids peep in and Youhei roars to scare them off. It’s his way to teach them not to get close to beastfallen as lots of them were treated like monsters as kids and become those monsters when they grow up. So it’s like humans created monsters. Zero can see the soul inside him is still exceedingly human. In town, they see a couple kissing a public. Zero doesn’t know what a kiss is so Youhei blushingly explains it is a form of showing your love. Sorry, it’s not about putting your lips on a demon’s dick! Can’t blame Zero for not knowing since she was born and raised in a cave. As they leave Formicum, they see one those kids injured. Zero has Youhei treat her before they continue their journey to Latette. Youhei ignores Zero when she wants to try out kissing. When they fish, Albus’ magic is weak so Zero guides him by having him imagine the good food. His haul is now much better. Camping for the night, Albus asks about Youhei’s hard life. In return, he reveals his parents died a long time ago and was raised by his grandma. Mom was targeted by a witch hunt and killed while dad died trying to protect her. Albus doesn’t hate witches, just the idea that all witches are evil. As for Zero, she is unsure if she has ever seen or spoken to her own parents. All she knows that she has been spending her life in this cave studying and experimenting with magic. The only unfortunate thing is the food sucks. Zero offers to teach Youhei the basics of magic. That way she has a reason to stay with him. You mean like forever? Yeah. Because being with him is a lot fun. Aww, don’t make tiger boy blush. But he insists he won’t learn magic. He has his brute force and muscles. As they reach Latette, Youhei could smell something wrong. It isn’t burnt bread. Looks like everyone in town is dead and some corpses are burnt to a crisp.

Episode 5
The town isn’t burnt although some bodies are. Zero mentions a fire spell that only burns its target. From the way the victim dies, she can tell what spell is used and if they are amateur or pro witches. As there are some dead witches among them, Albus knows that this is the doing of rogue witches. They used to be allies under the Sorcerers of Zero but once they learnt magic, they turned evil. They are attacked by looters. Albus is mad and wants to kill them although he can’t bring himself to it. Youhei interrogates one of them and learns there was one tall guy who came walked in and killed other witches. He went towards the church. Inside, Albus shows the secret path to their hideout. The grimoire is gone. It could be stolen or taken away to the forbidden room. Searching there, Albus sees an old man barely alive. Before his last breath, he tells of a tall man passing by and disintegrating those who fought him. He believes that isn’t magic. He hopes Albus can gather the scattered brethren, reform the Sorcerers of Zero and lead them. When they leave, Zero senses something strange. It’s like the dead witches have their magic taken away from them. Albus knows only one man can do this. It is that tall guy, Thirteen. The moment he says that, a forced summoning has them falling through an abyss. Youhei is seemingly falling endlessly as he hears Zero’s voice. His body is already on the ground but he needs to snap out from his mind. Zero guides him to return to his consciousness. She mentions only 2 people she knows can use this forced summoning: Her master and Thirteen. The latter is before them. He mentions this spell is casted for anyone who mentions his name in the church. Albus calls him the traitor to all witches although he believes he only restored chaos. Flashback shows the king and his men visited a massacred villages. The Sorcerers of Zero popped up before them and want him to end the witch hunt or risk more victims and the rogue witches will keep pillaging. The king has no choice but to fight fire with fire and sends Thirteen to the fight. In exchange, the king will help him look for the grimoire. Instantly, Thirteen’s magic killed all the witches. Albus accuses Thirteen to be the king’s underling as he is helping in the witch hunt. Enough talking because Thirteen and Zero now face off with their magic to see who is stronger. Looks like they’re both pretty equal. Youhei and Albus need to do something instead of being useless they want to end up getting burnt in the crossfire.

Episode 6
Suddenly they both stop when the bell chimes. It’s time. For dinner. Can’t fight on an empty stomach. Seriously? Why does this remind me of that Road Runner and Coyote show? After having dinner inside the royal castle of Plasta, they get to the topic at hand. Zero left the cave since he was taking too long to find the grimoire. He became the Sorcerer of State as the most effective means. Though it hadn’t yielded any effective results. Unfortunately the person who stole it has started spreading its teachings and plunged the kingdom into chaos. When Albus argues about the Sorcerers of Zero being right because they protect others, Thirteen counters that with another question: Who are they protecting? They kill others too. Innocent ones sometimes. If they think they are the face of justice, this is the reason why there is war. The Sorcerers of Zero are hypocrites since those evil ones are merely banished and left to their own devices. As explained, there are currently 3 factions of sorcerers: The Sorcerers of Zero who wants to protect witches and coexist with humans; Rogue witches who want to do evil things; Sorcerers of the State who hunt down both groups. Thirteen is in this group. Thirteen sees Albus as having dangerous but potential power. He wants him to join him and is promised knowledge and power. Otherwise he will be burnt at the stake. Albus then learns the truth that the grimoire was stolen some time ago. Zero admits that she was robbed. By Albus’ master. He killed all the students in the cave. Only Zero and Thirteen were the survivors. When Albus remembers his assumption that Zero was his ally, the only thing left he could do is cry. Youhei asks why she wrote something so dangerous in the first place. Convenience. Ever wanted to light a fire without a flint or catch fish without net? She thought everyone would be happy with such magic. Long ago she wanted to go outside but was told it was a terrible world for witches. So she started writing new powers that could be wielded by anyone and the world would want and accept witches. She regrets doing so and should have heeded Thirteen’s warning to burn it right away. Zero will not return to the cave as instructed. Since this is her grimoire, it is her sin and responsibility to bear.

Youhei rests in his room when a mouse familiar wants him to follow him to someone. It is to Thirteen’s room. Thirteen wants to thank him for taking care of Zero and gives him a magic potion from an application of Zero’s method. It nullifies magic and this means if he pours it on himself, he will become human again. By doing this, Youhei doesn’t need a reason to protect Zero anymore. Is he sure about this? This is Thirteen’s way of telling him to run because he doesn’t know how scary Zero is. Despite Zero not interested in his head, has he ever thought how Zero offered sacrifices for her summoning? All sorcerers considers others besides themselves as tools to be used. Youhei is like a rare special animal, that’s why she treats him differently. So once he outlives his usefulness, he’s gone. It is evident that he is under her control because during their magic bout, Youhei protected her instead of following his beast instincts to flee. Youhei denies all this but Thirteen thanks him for bringing her this far and cannot help him anymore. He tells him to choose a right time and place to use the potion since they are at war. He will once he is home. As Youhei packs his stuffs to leave, Zero is outside his door, inviting him to some celebration but he gets suspicious of her and draws his sword. Zero immediately knew Thirteen had done something to him. Her scream has Youhei back to his senses. She is disappointed that he had doubts of her, the reason he was easily manipulated by Thirteen. She laments he didn’t trust her when they made that blood oath. That’s it. Get out of here. The contract is over. They have nothing to do with each other. Zero moans she shouldn’t have hired him.

Episode 7
Youhei wanders around town beating up beastfallens who misbehave. A tavern girl enlists his help in exchange for him to stay at her place. Youhei cooks well as he explains he plans to open a tavern once he turns back into a human. She believes in that dreams and hopes he could need a beautiful tavern girl like her. I guess his taste in beauty differs. Later that night as several drunk beastfallens patron and cause a ruckus at the tavern, her father is distraught although she believes Youhei can deal with them. Father didn’t like how she allowed Youhei to use their utensils but she reminds him about leaving a starving beast alone with her. Remember how mom was devoured by a beastfallen? Youhei heard it all and goes out to beat the crap out of them, pays for their portion and then leaves. Meanwhile Zero confronts Thirteen and she is mad that he influenced Youhei to leave her side. She is going to teach him a lesson and then leave this place. Not on his watch. Youhei is resting in the woods when that wolf guy comes looking for revenge. But he is not going to fight him and has employed witches to go after his head. Unfortunately the witches betray wolf guy and attack him. Youhei supposedly took a direct hit from an attack. However nothing happened to him. In fact Zero somehow experiences that blow and collapses before her due fight with Thirteen begins. He takes her to bed and comments she should never have left the cave. Youhei notices a fearful witch fleeing. He tries to interrogate her but when she calls him a monster, he starts to feel that beast urge to eat her. But Zero’s words that his soul is human made him come to his senses. Wolf guy pleads to save him but Youhei doesn’t give a damn. However wolf guy says he can’t die here because Sorena asked him to protect her granddaughter. Youhei wants to know if she has the Grimoire of Zero. Maybe. Not sure. But he is sure the guy she is with has it. Now we’re talking.

Episode 8
As Youhei patches up Holdem (wolf guy’s name), the latter explains he was born of human and a noble. He was caught sleeping with somebody’s wife so he fled for his life. In the forest, he met Sorena. Because she fed him, he wanted to serve her. She didn’t want a manservant so he suggests turning him into a beast. She wanted to leave him be but her granddaughter took a liking for him. Shortly, Sorena turned him into a beast. His reasoning was that all those who were after him would stop looking for him. What about witches? If you noticed, all those targeting beastfallens are low rate. The only people buying their heads are wives of nobles obsessed with demonic rituals. Which means Zero was never interested in Youhei’s head in the first place. Holdem came to live an easy life taking care of Sorena’s granddaughter. But after the plague hit, they wanted to bay for the witch’s blood. Holdem is ready to die and kill them to protect her but she doesn’t want him to sully her name. Instead, take her granddaughter and run as she will be willingly caught by them. Sorena’s daughter swore revenge and went her own way. Holdem was fooling around and recently was gathering information about Sorena’s granddaughter and that she might have joined the Sorcerers of Zero. Holdem believes that guy betrayed Sorena and burnt her at the stake. He has no proof but believes he was the one behind the plague to purposely make a misunderstanding with the villagers.

As the duo leave, they see commotion of people trying to head into Plasta. It seems there is going to be a witch burning ceremony today. They rush back and Youhei couldn’t believe that Thirteen is going to burn Albus at the stake (after numerous times, Albus rejected him). However Holdem recognizes Albus as Sorena’s granddaughter! So my suspicions were right that Albus wasn’t a boy… Youhei knows Thirteen is a manipulative guy since he is giving a sermon to the crowd how evil witches are. After he is done, Albus makes her speech for all the witches to strike Thirteen die after her death. The burning begins. Holdem can’t wait no longer and rushes to save her. At the same time Youhei distracts the crowd with his random bombings. With the chaos, Holden rescues Albus from the stake while Thirteen tries to reign Youhei in. However Thirteen tries to stop the guards from attacking Youhei because any attack directly on him will be diverted to Zero. This gives enough time for Youhei to escape via carriage with Holdem. A short chase from the guards but ultimately the horses won’t listen as they plunge down the ravine. Don’t worry. It will take more than that to kill a beastfallen. Thirteen feels the need to capture them quick but alive. He wants the assassins sent.

Episode 9
While camping, Albus says she does not have the grimoire with her and one of the Sorcerers of Zero must have taken it. The reason she was against joining Thirteen is because of his cruel methods of killing all rogue witches and Sorcerers of Zero. Youhei agrees with Thirteen’s ways because normal people can’t tell the difference anyway. Albus is sure she can convince the Sorcerers of Zero to take out the rogue witches and that guy who stole the grimoire. When Holdem says Albus cannot take that guy out, they explain all Sorcerers of Zero made a blood contract before joining. This means they cannot kill him and if they do, they die. When Youhei blames Zero for coming up with magic and without it this whole mess wouldn’t be there in the first place, Albus hits an idea. Since Zero can nullify magic, what if they make a huge circle covering the entire kingdom and if Zero denies that circle, magic should disappear. Then they could start again of spreading magic correctly. It is a great idea but they need Zero whom Albus has no idea where she is being held. They need some sort of her belonging if they are to trace her. Hmm… Aha! Her old clothes at Formicum! But first they have to escape those pesky assassins in which they successfully give them the slip. Youhei manages to get past the gates since he fakes his appetite for humans at this hour. They see the creepy shopkeeper worshipping Zero’s old clothes! Sorry to interrupt but we have business with it. Poor shopkeeper. He doesn’t want the money and is begging if they’re going to burn it, burn him with it! Somebody please shut him up… Albus uses her magic to locate Zero. In the top tower of Plasta’s royal palace. So while Youhei hurries his way there to rescue her, Albus and Holdem also make haste to draw magic circles around the kingdom. After drawing a couple of them, they are approached by members of Sorcerers of Zero. It seems that guy guided them here and they are looking forward to Albus’ leadership for a rebellion. But when Albus mentions her goal to seal magic, they consider her a traitor and will bring her to trial. Holdem tells her to surrender because they can draw the circles anytime but it won’t do any good if she’s dead. Albus and Holdem become their prisoners.

Episode 10
Once Youhei breaks into the top tower, Zero doesn’t want to be saved. He left her, remember? Plus, does he not realize this is one of Thirteen’s traps? Zero starts crying as she tells him about her feelings when he left her. The feelings she felt when Thirteen took him away from her. She knew he hated witches and so she let him go. Why did he come back? What does he want? She will give anything. Just don’t leave her again. When Youhei tries to tell Albus’ plan, they are forced summoned. Meanwhile Albus tries to tell his story but nobody believes her. At this point the Sorcerers of Zero have received instructions from that guy to strike down Thirteen. Holdem is taken to be killed but the old man frees him. Despite they have different approaches to end the war, their end goal is the same. They should do what is right. Youhei wakes up in the dungeons. Zero is imprisoned before his eyes and Thirteen standing before him. Youhei tries to tell of their plans to nullify magic in the kingdom. With Thirteen rejecting it, Zero reveals the truth that Thirteen’s plans aren’t to get the grimoire or end the war. Those are just stepping stones for his ultimate goal. Youhei is shocked to see Thirteen in possession of the Grimoire of Zero. Yup. It was never stolen in the first place. To erase the fear of witches from the people’s hearts, Thirteen must create evil witches, put them on display and then eradicate them. While spreading the grimoire, he became Sorcerer of the State to oppose witches. Therefore Thirteen and that guy are the same person!

Thirteen corrects them. He admits he did set the stage but all those wrongdoings were the witches decision and actions alone. He did not incite the Sorcerers of Zero to act. He just spread the framework but they decided to use it for evil to exact revenge for Sorena. Because of that he had to play the righteous Sorcerer of State as the people wished. He wished Zero had never left that cave while he was creating a new kingdom for her where magic is a noble art. When he told her magic would destroy the world but she insisted to create that dream, that’s why he took it upon himself to create that dream for her. So when the Sorcerers of Zero strike him down, they’ll be killing themselves too since he is that guy. Zero is not pleased he plans to kill all witches in her name. As for the plague, Thirteen didn’t start it. It was Sorena’s experiment to save people gone wrong. As for killing his comrades in the caves, he sees them as mindless except for Zero. He was the one who suggested to take Zero out but they were afraid of her and were intent on leaving her alone forever. Youhei is upset he never gave her a choice. He made her lonely. He thinks he knows Zero better compared to Youhei who only spent a few days with her. But there is no way he could ever understand her since he is greedy, arrogant and selfish. Thirteen tries to petrify Youhei as he throws the potion at him. He dodges and it explodes upon contact with Zero’s cell. Now that she is free, she challenges Thirteen to a magic duel. She is going to remind him the difference in their numerical naming.

Episode 11
Albus once again tries to have the Sorcerers of Zero listen to her. However she is asked about her whereabouts during Latette’s attack. No reply. Zero and Thirteen begin their epic chanting. It seems Zero is stronger and her magic is about to kill Thirteen. Youhei tries to stop her but since she isn’t listening, he protects Thirteen. Unaware that he still has that protective magic on him, Zero takes full brunt of her own magic. Thirteen explains to him about it as he reminisces the old days from the cave where he was entrusted to take care of Zero who was very curious about the outside sky. Suddenly Zero wakes up! She explains that she didn’t go all out in her magic and thus only damaged lightly her skin. The trick was not to see who was the strongest but who created the craft in the first place. You see, Zero had purposely written errors in the Grimoire of Zero as a way to defend herself. Lots of them. Therefore nobody can beat her in terms of using its magic. Zero will continue her mission to seal magic from Wenias. What will Thirteen do? His initial goal was to take over the kingdom for her. But that’s not what she wanted. In that case he no longer has any interests in it and will follow Zero. Holdem fakes the Knights are coming when he is the only one sneaking into the camp to rescue Albus. They make a run for it but some of the Sorcerers of Zero are hot on their tail. Thirteen shows a special necklace he gave everyone who joined Sorcerers of Zero so he can watch their movements. Looks like Albus is going to be dead meat if they don’t do anything. Zero puts her mission now to rescue and reunite with Sorena’s granddaughter. Just in time to save Albus from being zapped by those sorcerers. Albus and Holdem are confused with Thirteen on their side so they explain. However Holdem is still mad and punches him. In any case, Thirteen is not responsible for that plague since it was an amateur’s witch experiment gone wrong. Still, he is indirectly responsible for Sorena’s death. All he could say is sorry and sometimes he has regrets whether he could have saved her. Not enough for you, Albus? Remember, you can’t kill him because of the contract binding to him. But Thirteen did a service and voids that contract. Now she can kill him and he will not refuse death. However he wants a chance to make things right.

Episode 12
Thirteen further explains that Sorena’s sorcery would have saved the villagers but that would make them distrust her. However as a wise witch, she knew her death would trigger a war so why did she willingly get burnt at the stake? Did she really want a war? There must be a greater plan. Hate to break this up but let’s finish drawing the magic circles around the kingdom. So they split up and complete their task. Everyone meets back at the centre. All but Albus. She’s running late… At the same time, the witches are attacking all over the kingdom in search for Thirteen. How can Wenias hand over somebody they don’t have? I guess it’s time for the kingdom to wipe out the witches too. Get ready for a bloody fight. Some Sorcerers of Zero have encircled our heroes. They’re unleashing beasts to fight them as Youhei and Holdem try to fend them off while Zero and Thirteen prepare their spell. And now the entire giant wild boar party is here. Oh boy. Luckily like in a true late entrance fashion, Albus returns. Her magic is needed to help complete the spell but it still requires a sacrifice. Zero wants Youhei to be it but assures it won’t kill him. Since asking nicely won’t do, she orders him. That’s more like it? Youhei becomes possessed by a summoned demon as magic all over the kingdom is nullified. In the aftermath, Albus declares she will become the leader of witches and turn Wenias into a kingdom where humans and witches can live in harmony. Thirteen realizes Sorena’s death was for this outcome.

Youhei wakes up 3 days later from his slumber. With Zero getting back her grimoire, is it time for Youhei to turn back into a human? Not quite. During the summoning process, his human soul fused with the beast. And with her magic power quite depleted, it will take some time. Hey, they didn’t set a time limit, right? So you mean he has got to continue be his mercenary? Is she travelling again? Yes. As magic has spread outside the kingdom, it is her responsibility to eradicate them all. Shortly, Albus leads a festival to celebrate peace between humans and witches. She burns Thirteen at the stake as the last death. Though, it was just for symbolic purpose and Thirteen didn’t actually die. Yeah, it was all for show. As magic will continue to grow, Albus wants Thirteen to be around when that happens. Thirteen will return to the forest so he warns Youhei one last time that if Zero comes to hate this world, he will not hesitate to destroy it. Wenias subsequently developed a magic education programme to deal with any magic related problems, hence the first state sorcerer programme was born. Youhei and Zero bid farewell to the rest before they set off on their journey. Youhei shakes Albus’ hand but she pecks him on the cheek! Holdem is going to kill him! Zero also wants a kiss but Youhei denies her. He thought she is in love with Thirteen. Then she drops another bombshell: Thirteen is her brother! Oh well… Zero wants Youhei to become her manservant and to reveal his name. He won’t. Being her mercenary is enough. She notes it is a good thing he is a beastfallen because if he was human, he would have fallen for her beauty. And if she was a human, she would have been dead by now or feared him. At least it gives Youhei a reason not to be sad as a beastfallen.

Beast Saga: Zero No Tsukaima
Just a thought. Could Zero and Youhei be in love with each other since they continue to be in each other’s service and travel in each other’s company? I know the thought that they are employer and mercenary covers it up but perhaps I’m thinking too much too. Uh huh. Besides, it would look like a very odd beastiality and lolicon romance if the duo really end up as a couple. At least with them continuing the journey gives them a reason to exist. No more wasting time and languishing around in some cave and no more running away from crazy witches who are out for animal heads. They can now have proper stories to tell from their future adventures that awaits.

The plot might overall be ordinary as it is a simple quest gone wrong with its twists and turns. Personally I still find it interesting but can’t help be confused while I was in the midst of watching it. What I mean is that for example, when that guy, the head of the Sorcerers of Zero was first mentioned, I had this thinking that he was Thirteen. There was no proof whatsoever but my guts tell me they are the same person. Then they played it out as though they were different persons. Okay. Time to reconcile the differences. I accept they are both different people. And then finally it actually turns out they are both the same person!

The small cast of characters help make the series interesting too although there is nothing really that great about them, there is nothing about them that you would make you want to hate them. I know some anime series have characters that are purposely created to be hated but I’m not here to talk about that. With the rising tensions and developments in the story, you can’t help wonder and anticipate what they will do next and root for them. Is it because they have a big furry and fuzzy creature on their side? Now you wonder the importance of animal mascots in a show.

So for Youhei, he is just an ordinary mercenary. Okay, not so ordinary if he wasn’t a beastfallen. He has his own set of principles and codes he lives by (no killing even if it is a baddie) and has a few flaws (this mercenary job and on the run from witches his whole life makes it hard for him to place his trust in others). In this sense he is like any imperfect main character. Nothing so much to like about him but at the same time you can’t really hate him. Like I said in my previous paragraph, could Youhei be likeable just because he has a physical appearance of an animal? Feline lovers rejoice? Would he be less likeable had he been human? Maybe this is one reason why I support Youhei. Well, you don’t often have a white tiger as your main character.

I also believe that Youhei doesn’t really want to be turned back into human. At least not for the time being. He might seem he made a deal with Zero to be changed back or even accepted a fake potion from Thirteen, but it isn’t that end goal he really wants to achieve it. Would life be better as human? Would things change? I mean his childhood was already ruined when he was born this way, half his younger days are gone and spent running away from those hunting him. After he transforms back into human, what next? I know he said something about opening a bar but seriously? That wasn’t just whimsical talking? Maybe. Therefore I believe Youhei accepting Zero’s proposal to be her bodyguard is more of to give his life a meaning. A meaning to his existence.

Zero has noble intentions and only wants the best for the world. However being secluded for a long time, she is socially inept and this is partly a reason why there is a small barrier and trust issues with Youhei. Furthermore, it doesn’t help that she has this poker face and the way she talks has this monotonous feel to it. Furthermore, you have to remember that she is a witch and she must be careful what she has to say and can or cannot reveal. So depending from which side you are looking at, Zero could be a liar or just someone who picks the wrong words for example when she says the Grimoire of Zero is stolen. Technically it is. And isn’t. Also, she could have also said Thirteen had the grimoire all along and save the confusion but I know this is for the plot twist. But she sounded like she made that statement sound like they are both separate matters when they are in fact the same and related. After all, we humans love to assume and jump to conclusions and quickly judge others so it is not entirely her fault. And the final revelation that Thirteen is her brother? Wow. It’s like this witch has lots of secrets… Keep ‘em coming…

Not really sure about witches and poker faces because Thirteen too has this dead looks on his face. Heh. At least Zero can smile sometimes. Because of that, it is hard to tell what Thirteen is thinking. Is he friend or foe? Of course for plot purposes he sounds like the big bad crazy villain out to kill all witches by deceiving everyone for the sake of the kingdom which is ultimately for the sake of Zero. With the turn of the events he defects to her side and could it be in the bigger picture he was just playing the villain? Or is he just greatly misunderstood because of his poker face feature as well?

Albus brings a bit of life between the monotonous interaction between Zero and Youhei. Though sometimes I feel that Albus is a bit of a useless character. In her bid to become strong and live up to her grandma’s legacy and name, it caused a lot of problems for the group. Not to mention she got imprisoned, almost got burnt at the stake and then getting captured again by her own people. She does have her roles but it is often overshadowed by Zero and Youhei. Luckily she owns it up in the end by living up to her grandma’s legacy to lead a new peace between both sides in the kingdom. With Holdem joining the group, I suppose he is supposed to be the comic relief. Not in an idiotic sense but his carefree attitude in a way makes him a bit ‘cooler’ than serious Youhei who has to act tough simply because it would be just plain weird to see a huge tiger acting all emo and sensitive. Really.

The action bits are just average and it isn’t something that you should pin your hopes on for. Because like for Youhei, he just uses his brute force and his big size to get things done. Either he is that strong or many of the witches he fought are just low level ones because their magic feels so weak. I mean if you compare it to the likes of Thirteen, it pales in comparison. He too can’t compare to Zero although she mostly nullifies the magic.

Art and animation are okay, nothing too fancy. Even if it is a fantasy setting, the designs of the buildings and architectural structures take after European medieval times. But the series spends half its time in the forest or outside town thus the background sceneries would be just the standard trees and forests. Yeah, what was I expecting? Magical enchanting forests with fairies and pixies? Animated by White Fox, another reason why I was confused about this series at first was because the same studio also animated Re: Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu. And so I thought it was a sequel or prequel. Definitely misleading.

Something about the opening theme that feels like it isn’t really befitting this series. Misha Na Watashi by Tapimiru isn’t actually all that bad. However this rock piece has this lively and sparkling feel to it. Considering that this fantasy adventure series is a bit dark and grim of a nature, hearing this piece somewhat makes it feel out of place. If you’re talking about action animes like One Piece or Naruto, this song would definitely fit better with those titles. The same goes for the ending theme, Hajimari No Shirushi by Chima. Again this isn’t a bad song as per se but this slow ballad doesn’t feel like it fits with the genre of this show. It is one of those kind of songs you want to lie down outside on the grass on a sunshiny day and let the breeze blow through as you close your eyes and dream about all the nice things in life. Really. This song is that calming. So if you’re Zero, this song makes it a perfect lullaby to sleep on Youhei’s warm fur. Purr-fect!

Voice acting is also okay, nothing special. I only recognized Takehito Koyasu as Thirteen. As for the rest of the cast, they are Tsuyoshi Koyama as Youhei (Kurou in Utawarerumono), Yumiri Hanamori as Zero (Hanako in Anne Happy, Koyori in Shakunetsu No Takkyuu Musume), You Taichi as Albus (Anzu in Prison School, Kenya in Boke Dake Ga Inai Machi), Masayuki Katou as Holdem (Demiurge in Overlord, Kiyomasa in Deadman Wonderland) and Yoshiko Sakakibara as Sorena (Haman Karn in Mobile Suit Gundam series).

Overall, this is an interesting and enjoyable adventure fantasy series. Just too bad that it might be confusing to fans of the Re: Zero one and to a certain point, Guin Saga (though, I haven’t watch this one at this point yet). So it clearly goes to show that you can’t judge a book by its cover or in this case, an anime by its title. That is why I suppose they told us in the anime that there is a distinct difference between sorcery and magic although we have used the terms interchangeably like forever. So the difference is just whether you draw circles? Oh… I can’t even draw a perfect circle… Oh well. Back to square one. Pun intended…

Thanks to my little stint in the survival genre especially the interesting and astonishing (albeit not perfect) Mirai Nikki, it was only a matter of time that I decided to dabble in another anime of the similar genre. After all, I already did mention in that blog of some of the anime titles of this genre that I would be interested to look at and it is no surprise that now I find myself drawn to watch Umineko No Naku Koro Ni. Without spoiling so much, it is about a family gathering that is more than just discussing about the distribution of the family’s head’s wealthy assets. The dying patriarch seems to be obsessed in reviving his dead lover believed to be a witch and the main ingredients of resurrecting a witch is, you guessed it, sacrifice. With the deadly storm entrapping the family on the island, they are forced to fend themselves in a battle that hovers between fantasy and reality.

Episode 1: Opening
Kinzou Ushiromiya has about 3 months to live. He seems to be desperate for Beatrice’s smile and would return everything just to have that again. The other Ushiromiya family members gather on their private island, Rokkenjima for their annual family gathering. We are introduced to several characters of the family from uncles and aunties (Krauss, Hideyoshi, Rudolf, Eva, Kyrie, Natsuhi, Rosa) to young relatives and cousins (Battler, Jessica, George, Maria) to the servants (Chiyo Kumasawa, Genji Ronoue, Kanon, Shannon, Toshiro Gouda). There is a big portrait that Battler notices. She is Beatrice the Witch. Their grandpa and family head Kinzou believes in the existence of witches. Family history reveals that the Ushiromiya was a prosperous family owning many mills till the great earthquake wiped everything out and killed many of the family members. Kinzou was tasked in rebuilding everything and he used his wealth and extreme luck to turn the tables around to make the family prosperous again. It is rumoured that he made a contract with Beatrice to sell his soul in exchange for 10 tonnes of gold which is equivalent to 20 billion Yen. Battler thinks it is a whole lot of bull but Maria really believes in it. Meanwhile the adults are beginning to talk about money and inheritance. Something about embezzlement of funds and it ends with Natsuhi being berated by Eva due to some family status thingy. The siblings try to gang up on Krauss and make him agree to their several conditions in exchange to let him handle the distribution of the assets. But Krauss knows a bit of their other shady dealings and shuts them up. Unfortunately he has no money to help them and suggests they solve Beatrice’s epitaph instead. Maria gives a scorpion pendant as protection against Beatrice. Then they try to find her marked rose lost in the garden. Because she is making a very irritating noise, her mom Rosa tells her to shut up and since she remains persistent, she slaps her! The rest can’t get involved in this personal family problem and furious Rosa just leaves Maria to do as she wishes. A big storm arrives and Kinzou believes Beatrice has come. Time to begin the miraculous banquet. When Maria has not returned, they go find her. Thankfully she is safe but where did she get the umbrella? Beatrice gave it to her.

Episode 2: First Move
Everyone wonders who gave Maria the umbrella if none of the servants did. Then Maria takes out a letter she says Beatrice gave to her to read aloud to everyone. The letter has Kinzou’s seal on it. Maria is somewhat possessed as she reads the letter. It states that the contract with Kinzou has ended and therefore her resignation as special advisor. Thus they must return all the gold she has given and she will also take the family’s wealth. However Kinzou left a special clause as a chance for them to retain their wealth and honour. If they can find the hidden gold, this condition will be revoked and Beatrice will forgo everything that is due to her. This game is open to everyone so not only family members have the right. Of course Kinzou’s children do not agree with this as they have not heard about this and try to reach the patriarch but he locks himself inside his room. Battler’s mom, Kyrie talks to her son about the possible 19th person on this island. If that person wanted to hide his/her anonymity, why go all the trouble to deliver it to Maria? Could it be that Beatrice is one of the 18 just to create an illusion that someone outside the 18 exists? Battler’s dad, Rudolf has something to tell his family but he thinks he will be killed tonight. Krauss shows his wife Natsuhi a gold bar in his possession that Kinzou was believed to have received from Beatrice. The servants are given midnight shifts to guard the guests. There have been romantic trysts between George and Shannon. He gives her an engagement ring and wants her to give a reply by tomorrow.

The next morning, Kanon notices Gouda is not as his station. There are also a few people missing. The phone lines are cut so Genji wakes up Natsuhi. The first shock she sees are blood handprints all over her door. She wants to go see Kinzou so Genji gives her the key to enter his study. Kinzou does not want to be disturbed although he asks her if she longs to be with her old family despite being married into the Ushiromiya for quite some time. She notes her family is the one and only Ushiromiya and will protect the family’s honour and glory. Kinzou replies despite she does not qualify to wear the One Winged Eagle, she has already engraved it in her heart and without a doubt a blood relative, one who will inherit the glory of the family. Genji reports something strange at the garden shed. They see a strange circle like the ones used to summon demons painted all over it. When Genji gets the family doctor, Terumasa Nanjou, the teens see them hurrying away and follow them to the shed. To everyone’s horror, there are 5 dead bodies (Krauss, Rudolf, Kyrie, Gouda and Shannon). Their faces have been ripped off. There is a sixth body at the back (Rosa). Jessica is horrified her dad Krauss is dead while George may be getting the same feeling after seeing a familiar engagement ring on a finger of one of the corpses.

Episode 3: Dubious Move
Hideyoshi asks George the last time he saw Shannon’s face. He remembers her tender smile. He wants him to remember it that way (because certainly he doesn’t want to remember this terrified look before death on her face). The dining hall is also filled with blood and messed up. When they question Maria about the circle. She becomes possessed as she explains about the seventh magic circle of the sun that bestows the power to escape from restraints and gain freedom. As the radio is out, they cannot do anything until the boat arrives tomorrow. This means they are still stuck with the killer on this island. But Maria notes the killer is not human. It is suggested to stick together as they look for Kinzou who is now missing. Battler confirms that there is only one key to the shed and no duplicates. If it was nicely put back to where it was, doesn’t this mean the killer is among one of them and a person who knows this mansion well? Eva then talks to Battler about the possibility the servants may be the culprits and the possibility of more than one. Battler doesn’t think so because why go all the trouble to commit this flashy gruesome murder and put on more suspicions on themselves? Eva is glad over Battler’s calm composure because this means he doesn’t suspect her family. She is the only sibling left and stands to gain the most out of it. But she notes if she was going to commit this crime, she would have done it better and wouldn’t make herself a suspect. Battler talks to the servants about Beatrice. They really believe she exists and has come. Asking about how she looks like, they say she has no form and the portrait is when she takes human form. Before Battler can go crazy, Maria intervenes. She says Battler does not have the same wavelength and that is why he cannot see Beatrice. He is only alive because the scorpion pendant protected him. However he turns the tables that he wasn’t holding it last night and lost it. He still doesn’t believe this witch crap thingy.

Battler then theorizes that the culprit may want to make it look like a witch did it. Although George did theorize that Beatrice might be taking their lives as part of the interest because Kinzou used the gold to build back the empire and thus their lives are connected to it. Battler believes the culprit might be holding Kinzou hostage somewhere and threatening to kill each of the family member unless he reveals the hidden gold. That is why the culprit wants them to find the gold to make it easier for the culprit to steal. When Eva asks who last saw Kinzou, Natsuhi admits and returns the key to Genji. Eva then reveals something. After Natsuhi left the study, she placed a paper between the doors. After they return from the murder scene to find Kinzou. The paper is still there. It means Kinzou has never left. He is missing because Natsuhi killed him and dumped his body outside the window and hide it later. Natsuhi threatens to shoot her for this accusation and Eva dares her. Battler deduces Eva’s theory as wrong. It could have been Kinzou was hiding while they return to look for him and then left the place. Eva disagrees of why Kinzou would do something so odd so Battler points out that Eva did the odd thing too by placing that paper. Jessica wants Eva to prove she didn’t kill everyone last night before doubting her mom. Eva and Hideyoshi retire to their room. Eva admits she always picked on Natsuhi because she hated Krauss since young. When Genji knocks on their door for dinner, there is no answer. Fearing the worst, he opens it with a spare key. A chain prevents the door from opening fully. Kanon returns with a cutter (by this time a pentacle is written on the door with blood). They see Eva dead on the bed and Hideyoshi dead in the bathtub. Both have been stabbed between the forehead.

Episode 4: Blunder
George is devastated his parents are killed. After locking the door, they smell something foul. Kanon goes to investigate the stench originating from the boiler. Battler and Jessica contemplate how the culprit killed Eva and Hideyoshi in this locked room mystery. Maria interjects to say Beatrice did it. This is to show proof that no humans can do it. Each time Maria laughs, Battler knocks her head! As for the pentacle, is supposed to open any unlocked door. Kanon is inside the boiler and calls out to Beatrice that he will be the one to stop her summoning. He gets stabbed in the chest. The rest arrive. Battler thinks the culprit escaped via the doors. He tries to follow but eventually gives up. The foul stench is a corpse in the furnace. It belongs to Kinzou. Genji knows it is him because he has 6 toes on each foot. Also, they notice his family ring is missing. Kanon is treated by Nanjou but looks like he didn’t make it. Jessica is sad because she likes him. At this point, they are assuming the culprit has the master key to all the rooms. Battler even thinks that the culprit may be one of the dead. Because their faces were ripped off, there was no telling if it was them and the corpse might be replaced with a similar one. Feeling they cannot be safe in any room, Genji thinks there is one: Kinzou’s study. Maria points out Beatrice cannot open this door because there is that scorpion symbol on it that blocks her magic. Learning that Natsuhi had one hung from her door, Maria says it is the reason why Beatrice couldn’t get to her. There is a letter from Kinzou that states to glorify his name.

Asking about this Beatrice person if she really exists, Genji reveals she is Kinzou’s lover who died so he might have dabbled in black magic to revive her. Genji also adds that they have no children. Jessica heard that Kinzou donated lots of amount to an establishment for orphans in which he used them as experiments for this ritual. Then it hit Battler about the sacrifice. They go take a look at the epitaph. Currently everything that is stated there has turned out true. At the end, all will die to bring back Beatrice. Could it be that this family gathering is just a big sacrifice? When Maria points a letter from Beatrice on the table, Natsuhi becomes defensive. While pointing her gun at Genji, Chiyo, Nanjou and Maria, she believes one of them is the culprit who placed the letter while the rest were looking at the epitaph. She has Battler read its contents. It states for them to give up any hope of leaving this place. Either she wins or they all win. Natsuhi wants the culprit to confess or she will assume all of them are in cohorts and have them leave the room. Battler then throws his charm to Maria. He lied that he had lost it just to contradict her. After that, Battler notices a drawing on the letter’s next page. Researching it, it shows that it is a sign to deceive and separate others. Looks like they have fallen into the enemy’s trap. Then the phone rings. Natsuhi picks up and hears a girl singing. They leave the room to look for the rest. In a room, the adults are dead and Maria is singing alone at a corner.

Episode 5: Fool’s Mate
I thought everyone would suspect Maria as the killer. But apparently they want to know who killed them. You mean lolis can’t be killers? Maria says it was Beatrice. This has Battler blow his top so George tries a gentler approach. Maria explains that Beatrice came in via her butterfly form and thus locked doors are no hindrance. As Maria was holding the charm, she won’t kill her and instead told her to face the wall and sing. That was all she did. It is then they realize Natsuhi is missing. She has run out and blocked the door. She is calling out to Beatrice and wants to face her. By the time the kids break down the door, Natsuhi is shot in the forehead. She couldn’t have killed herself, could she? Yeah, it’s Beatrice. Maria now praises the Beatrice portrait and now that all the conditions have been fulfilled, Beatrice will revive and nobody will survive. She wants Beatrice to take her to her land of gold. Battler still cannot believe this sh*t. When a gold butterfly appears, Battler shoots it but it only replicates. Battler goes crazy. Maria laughs like crazy. In the end, a letter in a bottle written by Maria reaches some fisherman’s hands. It states she has already died by the time this letter is read and wants whoever reading this to reveal the truth. However the truth behind the island’s mass murder was never revealed until today.

The next scene is suddenly WTF???!!! Everybody is revived???!!! WTF???!!! The kids are discussing how that would be the bad ending if they reach the time limit before exposing the culprit. Apparently they didn’t even try to solve the riddle and were so obsessed in protecting themselves and this is what will happen. As everyone believes in the existence of Beatrice, only Battler still remains stubborn. He thinks they are being lazy to think further of the true culprit. Although he is not saying that one of the family members is the killer, wouldn’t they all like to know who actually killed them? It’s Beatrice, right? Stop saying that name! He throws down the challenge that if they want him to believe in witches, show Beatrice before him. And here she is in the flesh! Unfortunately Battler shifts the goal post. He thinks this is an illusion. They want him to believe so much in the witch that they conjure up this illusion. WTF?! Beatrice finds him interesting that he is the type that won’t believe in their kind if they turn to world upside down. Battler will prove all her supernatural kills are just human tricks. So Beatrice kills off everybody! OMFG! Just because he doesn’t believe in magic, everybody dies again?! Can you believe it? Battler still doesn’t believe this crap! It must be some sort of trick! He takes on her challenge that he will explain everything and will keep denying her existence. Later Beatrice is visited by another witch, Frederica Bernkastel. She has come to observe Beatrice as she has find it interesting that Beatrice started something of interest. Bernkastel hates being bored and she wants to be entertained by watching her. Therefore she will lend her powers not as an ally but to keep herself entertained. So please do not disappoint her.

Episode 6: Middle Game
George is dating Sayo (Shannon’s real name). They think they owe it to magic. Going back in time, we see Shannon smashed some mirror on a shrine cliff and called out to Beatrice to keep her part of the bargain. As Shannon remains a clumsy maid, she gets chided by the adults but George smoothly changes the topic and in a way saves her from further embarrassment. Eva doesn’t like how her son and this maid are getting along fine. So she calls George just to tell him about the marriage meeting. Although it breaks Shannon’s heart hearing this, Eva then whispers to her about George’s fiancée who is of higher status and education and reminds her of her place. Shannon laments before Beatrice’s portrait. The witch appears before her. Knowing of her love problems, she would grant Shannon her wish but in exchange will one request. There is a mirror on the shrine cliff she needs to break. Upon doing so, her powers will be restored. Shannon refuses to do that since the island has been peaceful and doing so will bring about chaos. Beatrice agrees. So is she willing to live this peaceful life forever? She then gives her a butterfly brooch. It is an item that will grant her wish but as long as she doesn’t smash the mirror, this brooch will remain just an ornament. A few years later, Jessica seems envious that Shannon is dating George. Shannon knows about Jessica’s love for Kanon.

Shannon returns the brooch to Beatrice but the latter doesn’t want it. Although Shannon is grateful that her magic made them a couple and that they should put in their own effort in making their love last forever, Beatrice wants her to think of this brooch as a symbol of friendship. Many rely on her but they fail to be grateful after their wish is granted. Beatrice reveals that mirror had some evil sealed inside it by a travelling eastern magician. Although her power hasn’t returned yet, she still can feel a faint existence. Shannon then gives the brooch to Kanon who is not happy to receive something from Beatrice. Shannon then talks to him about Jessica. Kanon visits Shannon’s school to pretend to play her boyfriend. Her friends can’t stop teasing her so she beats them up. Though Kanon hates crowds, he can’t help being mesmerized by Jessica’s singing performance on stage. Is it because the song had stupid yet cute lyrics? Back home when Kanon praises Jessica for her singing, this leads him to mention himself as furniture. He has forgotten his real name and not allowed to have a future or dreams. That is why he is not human like her. He heard from Shannon that she likes him. However love cannot materialize between a human and furniture. That is why he believes the relationship between George and Shannon will fail. He thanks her for thinking him as human. Later Beatrice confronts him that her love charm didn’t work on him so he chides her about playing cupid and is more like a witch who toys with couples’ heart and gives them false hopes. She reminds him her power will rise and she will revive. Then she will control everything on this island and the door to the land of gold will open.

Episode 7: Early Queen Move
Because Maria continues to be annoying and bugging mom to buy a Halloween candy, Rosa slaps and abuses her in the train! Realizing she is being watched, she stops and relents in buying her one. She’s quite the happy kid she is. Now she wants to dress up in a Halloween costume. As Beatrice the witch! Jessica learns from Chiyo about Beatrice who is the other master of this island and one who rules the night. Rokkenjima was once known as Azukishima, which is a corruption of Akujiki. The island was rumoured to be feared by sailors because of the large number of shipwrecks as evil spirits are believed to attach themselves to the island. When all the family members arrive on the island, the scene is paused. Beatrice and Battler are seen talking about how this torturous scene will repeat itself till Battler acknowledges Beatrice exists. But he still denies her and believes this will be her torture till she gives up. The scene resumes with Rosa abusing Maria for being annoying again and speaking about witches. This time she steps and crushes her candy and lets her be. When Kanon tries to console her, it seems she is very much happy that Beatrice is coming. Later when the storm comes, Rosa realizes Maria is missing and rushes back out to find her. She is still standing there, waiting for mama to come back. Rosa regrets her earlier actions but Maria says it is not her fault as she was possessed by an evil witch. Rosa is shocked when Beatrice appears before her. She even fixes Maria’s candy and then gives her a letter that mustn’t be opened now. It is an invitation to the hidden gold. She also gives Maria a letter to be read to the other siblings when they gather at the dinner table. Beatrice then enters the house with Genji leading her. Kyrie passes her and thinks she looks familiar. As Beatrice explains to Battler, unlike last time, she is now placing herself inside the game.

Beatrice talks to Kanon but finds him no fun since he is like a furniture. She then teases to use Shannon as sacrifice because she’ll have lots of regrets if she kills her after her successful romance with George. Kanon objects so Beatrice tells him to kneel and lick her feet if he doesn’t want Shannon to die. Does he have a choice? Later Kanon blames Shannon for her romance regret. Otherwise today would have been the day they will reborn as furniture into humans. Later Beatrice talks and teases Shannon about sparing her life because watching her love life is amusing. However Shannon knowing she likes to entertain herself by playing pranks on others is going to resist all that and that is to ignore her. This only makes Beatrice mad and will kill her. When everyone gathers for dinner, Kyrie asks about the guest. Gouda mentions Beatrice will be having dinner in her own room. This has the siblings shock and start causing riffs among them if Kinzou plans to distribute his wealth to her. They send the kids away with the doctor. Nanjou explains what he knows about Beatrice although he has never met her before. He knows she died long ago and Kinzou might be trying his hands in black magic to revive her. Perhaps her appearance here is for revenge? That night, George gives an engagement ring to Shannon and she gladly accepts it. Kanon doesn’t seem too happy about it. Beatrice shows herself before the siblings and all of them have no choice but to admit and acknowledge her existence.

Episode 8: Weak Square
Kinzou wakes up in the morning and realizes he is not the first sacrifice. So which 6 have been? Rosa and the servants are before the chapel. Weird pentacle is on its door and a message from Beatrice to Maria that this is her Halloween. Genji mentions the only key to this chapel is missing so Rosa goes back to the room where the kids are to find them all safe. Inside her letter is the chapel’s key. When they open the door, the horrifying scene of the other siblings dead at the table with their guts gutted out and stuffed with candy! Beatrice explains to Battler about this move unlike last time, their faces are now pretty clear. Unfortunately the kids enter and see this. Jessica gets worked up believing Beatrice is the culprit. She rushes back to her room but is not in. Making things worse, Beatrice left a letter saying she did it. Jessica is so mad that her asthma kicks up. Kanon takes her back to her room to rest. Beatrice shows herself and teases Kanon being a furniture instead of knowing a girl’s heart. She summons demon butler goats with magical blades. Wait. Kanon also has magical blades to fight them?! He easily defeats them. When Beatrice continues to mock Kanon as a furniture, Jessica objects to all that. She believes Kanon is more human than anything because he came to her rescue. Beatrice decides to kill them both as she summons one of the Seven Sisters of Purgatory, Asmodeus of Lust. She takes on Kanon and when she turns into a piercing tool, Jessica uses her body to protect him. Beatrice now summons another Seven Sisters of Purgatory, Satan of Wrath to kill Kanon. She turns into a piercing tool and strikes in his heart. Beatrice laughs at their pathetic deaths and to humiliate them even more, she takes away Kanon’s body.

Meanwhile as the rest trying to figure out the pentacle, Maria explains that magic sun circle. George then brings up how everyone got in if the key was in the envelope. So how did the culprit lock the chapel’s door? The scene pauses for another argument with Beatrice and Battler who is not amused of another locked room mystery. Since he argues there may be a hidden duplicate key or secret entrance, Beatrice adds a new rule that red words will appear whenever she speaks the truth. Though, this does not mean she is obliged to show him any proof. Battler refuses to believe the dead ones entered the chapel via magic door although Beatrice confirms everyone entered via the door. Others that she confirmed includes there is only one key, the door cannot be open via other methods like picking and the object inside Maria’s envelope is the chapel’s key. Battler then corners her with his answer. The culprit secretly stole the letter from Maria’s bag and after committing the crime, locked the chapel’s door and put back the key into the envelope and back in Maria’s bag. This proves the crime is possible without magic. Beatrice praises him. But that means he has to suspect one of his relatives. The scene resumes as they discuss about solving Beatrice’s epitaph. As real gold were at the crime scene, they deduce the hidden gold must be true. Maria doesn’t care for all that and just wants to go there and won’t get in Beatrice’s way. Rosa returns with a gun that she borrowed from Kinzou so that she can protect them.

Episode 9: Skewer
Suspecting Jessica and Kanon have not returned, they head to her room to see another pentacle. After opening it, they see Jessica’s corpse. As Jessica’s key is on the drawer, Rosa suspects the servants because only they have the master key to all rooms except the study and chapel. Because Genji and Shannon were with Kinzou, the suspicions fall on Gouda and Chiyo. Even more on Gouda because he was with Kanon. But the most suspicious is Kanon whose body is nowhere to be found. He might be the one who killed Jessica and locked this room. She wants to assume he is the killer and probably in cohorts with Beatrice to get the gold but Battler objects. He has Gouda explain what happened. Kanon gave Jessica his key to open Beatrice’s room. If Jessica has not given the key back, it must still be in her pocket. Nanjou searches her body and picks out Kanon’s key. Although this proves Kanon is not the killer as he has no master key to lock the door, Rosa’s suspicions fall back on Gouda and Chiyo. Battler also objects because he believes the servants cannot be such killers even if they are offered money because he knows they always want to make people happy. Therefore don’t go accusing people without proof. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. But this mean they are back to the problem of who locked the door. Another paused scene of Battler arguing the facts with Beatrice. She confirms a few more truths like the door is the only entrance and exit to this room and there are no other ways to get in. But when Beatrice points out Battler created this locked room mystery himself because he refused to acknowledge magic or suspect his relatives, back in reality Battler resigns and gives up in figuring out who locked the door. Although he clears Kanon as the killer, this means Shannon and Gouda are back to being suspects.

When everyone is having a meal, Maria shows the wolves and sheep puzzle. Rosa then has all the servants and Nanjou out of the room. With only the family members in it, this is similar to that puzzle. Rosa argues that more than one culprit could have killed the siblings. But the question now is who are the wolves and who are the sheep. It is made more suspicious why the culprit locked the door. Doing so would only place more suspicion on themselves. Rosa can prove she is not a wolf because had she been after Kinzou’s wealth, she would have killed all of them now and say Beatrice did it. However she has not done it. As the servants are in the kitchen, they heard a weird banging sound. Gouda opens the door only to find Kanon’s bloodied corpse! But he is not totally dead yet. He claims Rosa is the culprit. She is going to kill them all. Shannon suspects something amiss, runs to the boiler room. Kanon shocks everyone by getting up. He talks like he is fine and the pain is nothing to him. Shannon returns with a handkerchief she used to wipe a spider’s web. If he is really Kanon, it will do nothing to him. Kanon gets defensive and materializes his magic blades. Too bad Nanjou and Chiyo’s throat got slit in the process. As the rest restrain him on the wall, Genji slams the handkerchief into Kanon’s wound. After screaming in pain, he disappears.

Episode 10: Accept
The servants are finding it hard to explain what they saw and this only irks Rosa because her question is simple: Who did it?! It’s like it was Kanon but wasn’t. WTF. When they return to check on the corpses, it is now missing. Rosa believes that the duo are still alive and faked their deaths to attack them. Rosa then reads the letter about Beatrice’s reminding them to solve the epitaph and not look for her. It also states the corpses were taken for her ceremony. When Beatrice makes more truths about the doors and master keys, Rosa has had it with this farce and suspects the servants. Until the bodies are found, they will remain as suspects. Genji returns his key as a sign of trust and so do the other servants. After putting them in Maria’s bag, she is satisfied that this way she doesn’t have to suspect anyone and the best person she can trust is herself. When Maria says Beatrice doesn’t need keys and only magic to open doors, Rosa is about to slap her but Battler stops her. He starts crying and admits Maria was right! He should have believed in witches to save them the pain of it all. Rosa and the servants are confident they can regain their trust with each other after this. George accompanies the other servants into the kitchen. After that, Battler is dismayed when Rosa mentions she has never trusted them at all. Beatrice can calm Rosa’s suspicions by saying there are only 5 master keys and no duplicates. She can do so if Battler is willing to become her furniture. Shannon explains her spider move. Because evil spirits used to reside on this island, spider webs have that property to repel magic. She feels guilty for smashing the mirror and releasing that witch’s power. But they remember Natsuhi kept another similar mirror in her room and think if they get that mirror, they might be able to resist Beatrice. The plan is to retrieve Natsuhi’s room key from her corpse since the dead bodies are still at the chapel. Genji will not go as he needs to be on standby in case his master calls. The trio rush down to the chapel and after Shannon takes Natsuhi’s key, they are attacked by golden butterflies and Beatrice appears before them. In Natsuhi’s room, George is trying to pry open the box from the drawer where the mirror is supposed to be. Gouda tries to keep the door shut but he got killed in the midst. Beatrice and her goat army are here.

Episode 11: Back Rank Mate
George manages to pry open and the mirror activates a barrier that protects them. Beatrice summons Kanon to attack them but the barrier still holds its ground. When Shannon pities Beatrice that she doesn’t understand their love, this riles her a lot as she unleashes all her power on them, eventually killing them right before Shannon could have George confess his love to her again. Genji calls Rosa to inform the bodies of Nanjou and Chiyo have been found in the garden. Realizing their deaths are part of the ritual, Battler worries about George and the rest. Hurrying back to Natsuhi’s room, they see their corpses. All dead and yet another condition for the ritual fulfilled. When they return to the room, there is another letter from Beatrice about the ceremony going to start soon that will bring about her revival. Rosa then points the gun at him and clearly suspects he is the culprit. She believes he was the one who put the letter there. Battler then suspects back Rosa for being the most suspicious because she is the only adult not killed. Why wasn’t she at the chapel? Because she invited them to kill them! Maria starts crying over their fighting. This makes Battler sick in suspecting each other. He calls out to Beatrice to show herself and admit to these murders. Later, Genji brings Battler to Kinzou’s room. Beatrice is there as she called him here for his surrender. She would gladly answer all his questions if he admits her existence and also kneel and lick her feet. So Battler now becomes her pet? Kinzou wanting to go with Beatrice to her land of hidden goal gets devoured and her limbs torn apart by the goat army. Similarly, Battler also meets this same fate! Rosa takes a gold bar from the chapel and runs away with Maria. But the goat army is hot on their heels. Rosa realizes she has been a bad mother and despite all she has done towards Maria, she still needs her and not the gold. Eventually Rosa is captured and under Beatrice’s hospitality, she is forced to eat body parts of her siblings. The final dessert is eating Maria, in which the little girl taunts her to do so because she has always been in the way whenever Rosa brought home a different man. Rosa is forced to acknowledge Beatrice’s existence. Suddenly Battler revives to reject all that. Seeing how perseverant Rosa was, this gave him the will to come back. Can he do that? Beatrice dares him. The scene then changes again to Beatrice talking to Bernkastel. It seems she knows she isn’t just an observer but making a bet fighting against her. Because of this, fellow witch, Lambdadelta pops up and since she has a grudge against Bernkastel, she will side with Beatrice and bet against her. Bernkastel will go all out now that she has been exposed as Beatrice calls forth the next game.

Episode 12: Castling
This is a little confusing. Beatrice when she was young and human accidentally broke a family vase. Then this witch named Beatrice helped her to fix it before the stupid cat broke it again. The witch mentions about her teacher who practised some endless magic that could forever fix things and thus dubbed the Endless Witch. Mini Beatrice is awed and wants to become her disciple and thus Beatrice the witch takes her in. Eva dreams about Kinzou telling her off that Krauss will always rank higher than her. Her job is to marry a man that will be profitable to the family. While she laments this chauvinism, it seems her inner self continues to convince her to fight this to fulfil their promise to become the head of the family. But they have to look for the key to the Golden Land. The family gather at Rokkenjima again. The kids are happy together as Battler makes a vow for them to forever stay friends. Of course Beatrice won’t let this happen as she introduces us to her head demon butler, Ronove. This time, Rokkenjima is cut off from the real world and in the spirit world. After Maria reads the letter on Beatrice’s epitaph at the dinner table, this has Eva and Natsuhi lock heads on who succeeds the family and the assets. Although Natsuhi believes Krauss is the unshakable heir, the letter has made everyone fair game for it. Later the adults discuss this Beatrice person. Could she be really a witch or the 19th person on the island? Then those rumours about her being Kinzou’s mistress who is secretly living on this island and the reason she threw this challenge was perhaps she already had tons of gold so that she could trade with the family’s inheritance. Kyrie presents another option that there could be arrogance or she herself is playing in this game. Beatrice might be looking down on them that they can never solve the epitaph and to show off her superiority over the losers. Now we go back to Beatrice and Battler’s discussion regarding the extra person. Battler dares her to declare there are only 18 people only and because she can’t, it means none of the 18 is suspected and this means he can use the argument the 19th person is Beatrice the human and at the same time disproving Beatrice’s status as a witch if he suspects his own relative. With Beatrice also refusing to declare the fixed number of people on this island means Battler can theorize as many culprits as he wants. But Beatrice is not panicking yet. There is a reason she is refusing to say this. Back to the adult’s discussion, Rosa reveals Beatrice cannot be alive because… She killed her!

Episode 13: Gambit
About 20 years ago after Rosa was harshly scolded by her mom, she ran deep into a forest and stumbled upon a secret garden. That is where she met Beatrice and they talked about many things. Seems Kinzou has been keeping her here in this ‘cage’ and not go over the fence on pretence there are wolves outside. When Rosa assures the island is safe, Beatrice decides to follow her outside. Battler can’t believe this crap either so Ronove on behalf of Beatrice also speaks the truth about this hidden mansion called Kuwadorian does exist and that Beatrice did exist as a human in 1967. As Rosa takes Beatrice along the cliffs, the latter slips and falls to her death. Beatrice in spirit form now regains her memories as the Endless Witch. In this form she is free from Kinzou’s prison. Now Beatrice makes the truth statement that there are only 18 people on Rokkenjima. This means Battler must suspect his relative despite Beatrice’s short appearance (because she’s technically dead now) although he can’t believe Beatrice might be masquerading herself as one of the relatives. Or would he rather acknowledge her existence?

Genji, Shannon and Kanon are called to Kinzou’s room. It seems Beatrice and Ronove are here. Beatrice relays the good news to Kinzou that she agrees to reunite with him before the ceremony’s completion. The bad news? He is her first sacrifice. Old geezer bursts into flames. Because Shannon has no regrets about accepting George’s ring, Beatrice feels displeased. Instead, she wants to toy with Kanon a bit and calls forth the eldest among the Seven Sisters of Purgatory, Lucifer of Pride. If Kanon can best her Seven Sisters of Purgatory, she’ll let him choose 2 of 5 people who will escape becoming one of her 13 sacrifices. Shannon doesn’t want him to listen but Kanon wants to escape this furniture life and experience love like her. Kanon and Lucifer fight and surprisingly Kanon is superior. Even when Lucifer seriously tries to kill him, Kanon stood his ground. About Beatrice’s promise, well, she did say he had to defeat all of them, right? With the 7 sisters trying to pierce through Kanon, Shannon makes a barrier to protect him. She has no regrets in her life after fulfilling her duty as his big sister. Those words also irritate Beatrice as she vows not to let them die in peace. That is when Genji commends the duo for doing well and then, uhm, kills them off? He would also gladly sacrifice his life for them and Ronove does the honours to put him to sleep. Beatrice then has the sisters hunt for 2 more sacrifices. After Gouda became the unfortunate one, they aim for Chiyo. However she has a barrier that shields their attacks. Beatrice then confronts Chiyo and it is revealed that Chiyo was her teacher and the former witch known as Beatrice.

Episode 14: Positional Play
Both Beatrices being their epic magic battle. Original Beatrice thought she had won when the new Beatrice is impaled by her light spears. However the latter summoned some hidden weapon at the start of the battle and original Beatrice didn’t realize she got hit. It’s her lost. New Beatrice then mocks and steps on her head, gloating about her victory. This is only all the more troublesome for Battler because how the heck is he going to counter it all after watching this fantasy fight! Beatrice cannot stop laughing at how he will tackle this. Meanwhile the adults are at a dead end so when they leave the room to take a break, they smell a foul stench coming from the kitchen. A pentacle is on the door and it is locked. They check on the kids and they are safe and sound asleep. Kinzou and the servants are missing. They see Shannon sitting in a room but since she doesn’t answer, they break through the window to enter and find her dead, slumped on the chair. Battler is agonizing at the current events when original Beatrice visits him. Sure, she is ‘dead’ but now they are ‘out of the chessboard’. She offers to teach him something about magic. Do you know there are gremlins working behind the TV to make it work? Crap, right? How would he know? Has he ever taken a look inside? This is exactly what a Schrodinger cat situation is and what Rokkenjima is experiencing. As long as the box is not opened, the possibility of truths can exist together. Although Battler finds it weird that he is trying to deny witches but yet seeking help from one, he agrees to do so to end this tragedy. To avoid confusion, the original Beatrice will identify herself as Virgilia. Battler returns to Beatrice very confident and using the Schrodinger cat theory, because all the magic weapons and beasts summoned during the battle are nowhere to be seen, this means all that is left in the battlefield is just an ordinary rose garden. Beatrice is not pleased Virgilia is siding with Battler.

The adults are loading their guns after they found Kinzou’s body in the boiler. After Battler has Beatrice define the definition of a locked room and all servants have a master key, they reconstruct the murder scenes. Shannon was the first corpse found, beside her is an envelope containing a key to a next room in which another dead body is found. This loop is repeated till it is one big locked room mystery. Shannon -> Chiyo -> Gouda -> Genji -> Kinzou -> Kanon. Battler turns the tables by claiming that it is not how they were killed from outside but how they died from inside. This means they must have killed themselves. Because Beatrice doesn’t want to claim all 6 were killed by others, this is as good as losing the game. She is forced to say it and unfortunately this puts Battler in a bind. But Virgilia says not to be intimidated by what she says because despite claiming they didn’t commit suicide, she also didn’t say they were killed by others. Neither suicide nor homicide. This has Battler conclude that the murderer is one of the victims. But instead of escaping, there was an unforeseen accident that caused him/her to die and thus created an unwanted locked room mystery. Beatrice is about to admit more truths but Ronove holds her horses and wants time to strategize. Meanwhile Eva cannot figure out the sweetfish river puzzle till her inner self hinted something. She heads to the library to check and discovers something. Taking the underground stairs, it leads her to a room where it is filled with gold bars.

Episode 15: Isolated Pawn
Rosa congratulates Eva for finding the gold. She had also deciphered the riddle but had she been 5 minutes earlier, it could have been hers. The duo discuss about splitting the gold and Eva wants to hold off telling the brothers about this discovery till she can make them accept that she has inherited the family’s headship. But Eva’s inner self disagrees with all this as she claims the gold to be hers and thus her right as the family’s head. Beatrice congratulates her for finding the gold and that it belongs to her. As proof, she gives Kinzou’s ring. Because of this, a ceremony to pass on the witch title and powers to her. She will also take on the new name of Beatrice, though I will identify her as Eva Beatrice. She is introduced to the other witches like Lambdadelta who seems dissatisfied with this new Beatrice despite she recommended her as Beatrice’s successor. She is also introduced to Ronove and the Purgatory sisters. Battler is confused with this farce and surprisingly so is Beatrice. From what I understand, this ceremony scene is fake and just her way of interpretation of passing the title. For the time being, Battler is advised to assume this Eva Beatrice is the representation of Eva’s inner self. When Eva and Rosa return to the rest, the former develops a little fever. Resting in her room, she talks to Hideyoshi about never believing in Beatrice and if it was, it was just a witch in her heart. She has this fear that she is changing into a different person and the witch inside her was provoked by Beatrice.

Maria is kicking up a fuss to check on the rose garden. She was tasked by Beatrice to look after it and if she doesn’t take care of it, something bad will happen to her. In order not to draw more attention, Rosa agrees to accompany her to check it to keep her quiet. The rose is still intact but appearing before them is Eva. Not the real Eva but Eva Beatrice. The real one is squirming in pain feeling that she is being kidnapped by someone. Rosa thought she is here to talk about the gold share but Eva Beatrice will not let her have a single ounce. She is going to make them her first sacrifice by levitating and then dropping them from that height. After that she resurrects them and is awed with her amazing powers and proceeds to abuse them with quirky powers. Having fun, isn’t she? Beatrice is laughing and having fun watching this scene that it disgusts Battler. Because nothing can be done to stop this as they are outside the playing field, Battler slaps her for being a nuisance! He doesn’t want to see her face again. Surprisingly, Beatrice actually feels bad about this and start reflecting that she may have went overboard enjoying too much of it. With Virgilia having nothing to say to her and even Ronove’s opinion that she is a numbskull in not understanding feelings of others, Beatrice heads down to talk to Eva Beatrice about the need to be more elegant in using her powers instead of flaunting it so recklessly which makes it disgraceful. She offers to show how it is done. Maria is disappointed when Beatrice cannot keep her promise so she kills her off by strangling the loli. As for Rosa, she impales her head into the sharp fence point. Eva Beatrice finds this killing method boring so Beatrice summons her servants and reminds them the need to perform in a graceful manner and be reasonable. Eva Beatrice isn’t quite happy with this boring turn of events.

Episode 16: Queening Square
Rudolf finds Rosa and Maria’s bodies. Battler is stilled so pissed off he doesn’t give repented Beatrice a chance to talk. He has hated her ever since the start for pulling off cruel deaths on his family. Beatrice has Ronove continue on her behalf. When Battler suggests Rosa strangles Maria out of anger and then accidentally slipped and fell, causing her to get impaled, Ronove makes another truth statement that they were killed by others. The adults discuss about Rosa being killed by someone familiar since she didn’t fire her gun and allowed to let her guard down. Eva cannot believe her other self did this. She has the gold and headship so she wants her to stop but Eva Beatrice still wants to sacrifice some to attain her full witch powers. She assures she will spare her family. This makes Eva feel even sick. It is suggested to run over to the kitchen and grab food as now it is the brightest time of the day amidst the storm. Kyrie, Rudolf and Hideyoshi will rush over and get things done quickly. Once inside the building, Eva Beatrice summons a couple of Seven Sisters of Purgatory, Leviathan of Envy and Belphegor of Sloth to kill Kyrie and Rudolf but spare Hideyoshi. Kyrie and Rudolf can sense something paranormal stalking them. The sisters appear. Since they are fast enough to avoid their shots, the adults decide to run for it knowing they have a better chance of surviving by fleeing. Leviathan corners Kyrie and mentions about her power source as envy. However Kyrie turns the tables that her envy is far greater than hers. She always loved Rudolf but somehow Asumu wormed her way into his heart. Asumu gave birth to Battler and Kyrie suffered a miscarriage. She bore that envy till the very day she died. And just like that, Leviathan gets shot.

Eva Beatrice shows herself before Rudolf and he is surprised to see his sister in this garb. When he fires, Belphegor protects her. Eva Beatrice isn’t appreciate she became her shield and mocks the Seven Sisters of Purgatory as outdated. She summons her own ones. Military bunny girls? Siesta 410 and Siesta 45 do some flashy calculating to fire and instantly kill Rudolf and Kyrie. Eva Beatrice then disrespects their corpses and is going to toy around with it when Hideyoshi slaps her for trying to act tough when she is just a weak coward. I’m not sure about this child-like punishment he is doing on her but she finds it annoying and kills him off. Beatrice then confronts her and has come complaining to do. However Eva Beatrice knows about her goal to make Battler admit her existence. Sorry, she won’t be obliged to do that since she is already a powerful witch with or without anyone’s acknowledgement. After the rest finds the corpse of the trio, when Battler wants Ronove to confirm the corpses, he won’t do it because he cannot take responsibility of this. He wants Battler to give Beatrice another chance as she has repented and will change. Even Virgilia will personally try to get Beatrice to apologize and hopes he can accept her back into the game one more time. Battler seems to agree although he points out he won’t forgive her still. Virgilia talks to Beatrice about Battler becoming her opponent not because he wanted to acknowledge her. It was because he didn’t want to accept the existence of a brutal witch no matter what. Remember, this isn’t a game to torture Battler and make him surrender. It is a test to see whether she can get Battler to acknowledge her. Virgilia wants Beatrice to apologize to Battler and come back to her seat.

Episode 17: Promotion
Beatrice is forced to listen to Battler’s lecture about toying with human emotions and the way she controls lives of others makes her unappreciative of life itself. After Virgilia defines the existence and role of the Endless Witch, Battler calls Beatrice a failure to live up to that name. This means she isn’t qualified to be a witch now. She will do anything to gain his forgiveness but I suppose she needs to think about it herself. He promises her one thing that he will not abandon this game himself and will wait till she becomes a real witch worthy as his opponent. When George is alone by himself, Beatrice appears before him and hints she can revive Shannon. George really wants her powers to do that but unfortunately, Beatrice has passed on her title and is not as powerful as before. She takes him out of the mansion as Ronove and the sisters lie to Eva Beatrice that they didn’t sense anyone exiting the house. Beatrice and Eva Beatrice confront each other in the dream. The former realized getting the headship was sufficient but became greedy after seeing the gold. She views her inner self as her evil part. This means she is responsible for all the deaths so far. Eva becomes devastated upon learning this evil self committed the murders. She is sad she has so many dreams yet to achieve but Eva Beatrice says those dreams are only made when she became an adult and has nothing to do with her. She launches a scathing attack on her and doesn’t want to see her face anymore. So how does Eva Beatrice deal with this? She kills off Krauss and Natsuhi!

Beatrice has George pray hard before Shannon’s body. She will try to open the door to Hades but because of her insufficient power, only George’s true feelings might be able to pull her soul back out. Eventually he does so and Shannon comes back to life. The emotional reunion and gratefulness is all short-lived when Eva Beatrice kills the duo! WTF?! The rest starts to find the missing ones. Jessica becomes distraught seeing her parents’ bodies. The same case for Eva when she sees George’s. Battler can’t end up the same fate as his parents. Who else is going to look after his little sister, Ange? Jessica barges in to accuse Eva of killing her parents because she was the only one with them. Eva also accuses them of killing her George. When things get so heated up, Eva accidentally fires at Jessica. Although she missed, the discharge blinds Jessica. After Nanjou treats her wounds and is about to get Battler, Eva Beatrice kills him! Then she toys with Jessica’s mind that she will be next. Jessica screams for help and that includes Kanon’s name. Beatrice is going to revive Kanon despite her limited power. This might be risky as it will all end here but if it is to make Battler acknowledge her, she’ll gladly do it.

Episode 18: Swindles
Kanon revives temporarily to help Jessica. But in spirit form. He leads her to hide in a room and thanks Beatrice for her help. As Beatrice tries to put a barrier on the door, she is shot by the Siesta sisters. However Beatrice still lives and this scares the sisters. After exploding her heart, Beatrice now exists in just her heart form. Before Eva Beatrice could step on it, the scene pauses. Battler has seen everything. Beatrice laments she wasn’t good enough to be his opponent. He admits to that because his true opponent is Eva Beatrice. She is now dragged into this game as Battler praises Beatrice for protecting the honour of true witches. The Siesta sisters can’t even harm him and this too makes them scared. Battler begins his move by bringing up the deaths of Rosa and Maria. This has him apply Eva is the culprit theory. However Eva Beatrice counters that with Hideyoshi’s alibi that he was nursing her in their room when it happened. Battler counters that argument although Hideyoshi was with Eva, it was a lie he was taking care of her. Eva Beatrice cannot confirm that in red. Now she brings up the deaths of Kyrie, Rudolf and Hideyoshi. Because it was Kyrie’s suggestion not to leave the mansion but later changed her mind to go out to get food, this proves she was under her mind control spell. They head down to the crime scene as Battler and Beatrice check Kyrie’s pockets and find a cigarette butt. This is the same cigarette brand that Hideyoshi smokes. Eva hate smoking and Battler believes the butt in Kyrie’s pocket is a sign left behind. As there was a cigarette butt in the ashtray of that room, noticing this, Kyrie realized Eva had snuck out of her room. Because Eva Beatrice cannot confirm this, Battler concludes Kyrie’s move to ask Hideyoshi to help was to isolate and interrogate him. However Eva Beatrice hits back with many red truths like how Eva was with Battler during the time and thus impossible for Eva to commit the murder. And since this makes Nanjou and Jessica the only suspects, she adds the survivors cannot be the killers. This all proves that the witch made the murder.

Battler finds it impossible to counter this and is about to give up but Beatrice knows a way. She will deny the existence of witches. This is a big sacrificial move that will remove and erase all witches from the scene. Eva Beatrice objects to this as she still wants to be a witch. Beatrice wants Battler to cover his ears so at least she would still be a witch in his eyes. Beatrice has atoned so much that Battler is crying for her. Eva Beatrice is held down by Ronove as Beatrice reads the truth of the non-existence of witches. All of them disappear shortly. Back in reality, Battler is shocked to learn that Eva is the big culprit and gets shot. Suddenly Battler and Beatrice find themselves surrounded by the rest of the casts. Everybody is still alive? They applause for them to finally reach here. All Battler needs to do now is the affix his signature like the rest of the family to admit the existence of witches so that they can go to the Golden Land. Battler feels something amiss when Beatrice and Virgilia become pushy for him to sign. Suddenly a chick breaks into the scene and tells Battler not to fall for this trap otherwise he will have lost. It hit Battler that everything has been an act and a trap. Realizing this chick is a piece Bernkastel threw in, Beatrice returns to her cruel crazy side and reveals this trap was setup with Virgilia. This chick will now reveal all that happened on that fateful day on Rokkenjima and will be her opponent. Beatrice is seen talking to Lambdadelta and being reminded about her job to keep winning for eternity if she wants to continue being a witch. Fast forward 12 years in time, that chick is actually grown up Ange. She is at Eva’s deathbed and wants to know the truth of her family’s death on that island but the family head continues to mock and despise her till her death. Ange has had it and is about to jump off the roof to kill herself when Bernkastel appears. She claims her family has been forever locked away on that day 12 years ago. The enemy is Beatrice and the source that forced a future of isolation upon her. Only the final Beatrice can stand up to her. In other words, Ange is Ange Beatrice. Although she cannot promise her family will come back if she defeats her, if she believes, she can bring about a miracle. Ange agrees to take this chance.

Episode 19: End Game
Ange returns to the past and on the day the families depart to Rokkenjima. She will uncover the truth and take them back. Beatrice feels bad after hearing from Ronove that Battler is in extreme depression. But when she sees him energetically trying to steal back his food from the Purgatory sisters, she gets embarrassed Ronove lied to her. Having fun? Battler won’t let that big deception bring him down and now that he has learnt his big lesson, he won’t trust any help from her. Beatrice introduces Ange into the game. But Ange hates Battler for slacking although she will greatly help him to defeat this witch. She disguises herself under the name of Gretel. We delve a bit in Ange’s past. After Eva was the only sole survivor at Rokkenjima, she took in Ange and raised her up strictly as the family’s successor. You can say her life was hell. Her classmates don’t think highly of her and reading Maria’s ‘magic’ diary, she is able to communicate with Maria. I’m confused. After Ange attempted to jump off the rooftop but was caught by a safety net, she is seen talking to Tetsuro Okonogi, the president of one of the siblings’ companies. She asks about that day on Rokkenjima so his theory is that Kinzou who once had Krauss in mind as the family head then believed Eva to be the suitable one. On pretence to solve the epitaph, Kinzou already gave her the answer. So when she was away at Kuwadorian to get the headship proof, the rest met with an accident. However Ange thinks all that is crap and believes Eva killed everybody for the wealth. Okonogi believes their difference in opinion is due to love. He knows Eva loves her family and even if she were to kill everyone, she wouldn’t kill hers. She was seen crying genuinely at the funeral of Hideyoshi and George. Ange is supposed to meet some family aunt next but she runs away. The goons try to get her but she is saved by her bodyguard, Juuza Amakusa. She wants to investigate the Rokkenjima incident.

Going back in time where the siblings have gathered, Krauss refuses his siblings to see Kinzou. Then Kyrie offers a proposal. She suggests they won’t see Kinzou if he fulfils a few conditions. Kinzou’s caretaker has to take good care of him. But of course. By any chance if Kinzou dies an unnatural death, his role as caretaker and head of the family will be relinquished. But a person can die in many ways, right? For example if Kinzou gets lost in the forest while taking a walk, it is due to the caretaker’s negligence. Of course once Kinzou’s die, they will inspect his body to determine his death. It seems Kyrie is hinting that Krauss knows Kinzou is dead and hiding his death to avoid splitting his inheritance. Back to Battler’s battle with Beatrice, with this argument this means there are only 17 people on Rokkenjima and he wants her to confirm the truth there are 18. However she won’t as she has gotten bored of this. He calls it unfair but Ange chides him for slacking as up till now he has accepted and played along with her unfair rules. This game isn’t just unfair. It’s just stupid. This riles Beatrice so she gives Battler a chance to speak in words of blue. He may do this when he tries to explain her magic murders with human tricks. But it won’t work unless it denies witches by itself. Once he does this, the witch who claims to use magic as murder must respond to it. Battler is still confused by this rule so again Ange chides him for looking at a single point. He gets the idea of countering with many points and as long one hits, it is all that matters. So his first blue points are Kinzou is already dead, there are only 17 people on Rokkenjima but this mysterious person X around there are 18 people and thus crimes will still be possible even if all 17 people have alibis. Krauss agrees to convince Kinzou to let them see the siblings as proof. Kinzou, alive and well is not happy he waltzed in here because his siblings threatened him. Wow. Old man can lift and throw this guy away. Kinzou agrees to meet them and make a great announcement of the next successor and put an end to their foolish quarrel himself.

Episode 20: Zugzwang
Ange seems to be dissatisfied in what Maria wrote in her diary about her happiness, so there is this confrontation with Maria about it. She is told how the truth can change its form depending on the observing. Showing an example whereby Rosa was supposed to be home and take Maria out to the movies during the weekend but instead she called to say she was unable to make it due to her busy schedule. From what I can see, it looked like she was having an affair. Maria was left home alone and heartbroken but her lion doll, Sakutaro helped cheer her up. Not sure if this is her imaginary friend or for real but the most important thing was Maria was able to be kept happy throughout the night. When Rosa did come home, Maria spotted a receipt from the inn she went. Rosa snatched it back and although she had that look that wants to beat her up, eventually she couldn’t bring herself to beat an innocent child and hugged her. Ange sees this as Rosa abandoning her to have her own holiday but Maria doesn’t view it as so. She claims Ange has lots of happy fragments around her but only chose to pick unhappy ones. This was true for Maria once until she got some magic power. As proof, Beatrice vouches for her and even shows a scene whereby Beatrice and Virgilia signed in Maria’s diary as witness to make Maria as the Apprentice Witch of Origins. Maria also notes Ange also have this sort of magic. Ange remembers she too underwent some sort of training that allowed her to step into the world of witches.

Along with Sakutaro, Maria will help Ange to train to become a witch. She has her try summoning a few familiars. She does summoning the Seven Sisters of Purgatory they are more interested in glomping cutie Sakutaro. To be easy on Ange’s training, Mammon of Greed is decided to help train her. They return back to Ange’s original time when she is in high school. Mammon notices her cheap hair accessories. She got them during a carnival outing with Battler. Ange says she wants to learn magic to revive her family. However her training didn’t go well and something went wrong that made her unable to use magic again and never saw Mammon until she graduated. Ange sees am occult professor who seems to be studying the Rokkenjima case. He explains how 2 bottle messages were discovered, one by a fisherman and the other by the police. Although both detailed the events that happened at Rokkenjima, the contents were different and both letters had the same handwriting. Making it more baffling is that both letters were signed by Maria. It made them wonder which was the truth and which was the lie and perhaps were there other more bottles out there. This has spawned many into finding such bottles and thus been dubbed the Rokkenjima Witch Hunt. They believe some supernatural or occult phenomenon has occurred on the island. When Ange shows Maria’s diary, the professor reacts in a very shocked way. This proves that the handwriting of the bottle letters and the diary are the same. While Ange is talking to Mammon, Lambdadelta interjects to warn Ange she has been tricked by Bernkastel. It is a lie that Battler would come home if she defeats Beatrice. Although it is true Battler would return to his original world, it would be in the past and not the current era. This means her win will be for nothing. Lambdadelta wants to make a deal with her. She wants to stop Battler from winning and turn this game from one tie after another forever. This way, Ange gets to be with Battler and this also satisfies Lambdadelta’s objectives.

Episode 21: Prophylaxis
Ange studies hard but her test results don’t translate into that. Her classmates bully her for being dumb and even force her to write an apology letter. Ange obliges until it gets out of hand whereby they question her existence. This is when Ange snapped as she orders the Seven Sisters of Purgatory to kill everyone! Because they can’t do it, she calls them useless and her disbelief in magic causes them to turn into stone and shatter. Mammon is the last one standing. Before she ‘dies’, she tells off Ange about resorting to her delusions to dirty her hands. Ange’s rage reaches far and wide that even Sakutaro transforms back to his doll form. This has Ange remember that she told Maria she didn’t believe in magic and this made Maria upset and excommunicated her from whatever magic circle. Ange feels so sad that she just wants to die and collapses right before her classmates. The scene now shifts to Maria. Home alone as usual, after she returns from the convenience store, she realizes she has misplaced her house key. Lost kid ended up at the police station whereby the officer tried to contact Rosa but was told she was away on vacation with her boyfriend and nobody in her office knew how to contact her. Maria heard all that and it made her feel sad. When Rosa comes home and a neighbourhood lady tells her off about leaving Maria home alone, Rosa tells her to keep her nose out of their family’s business. She denies whatever affair she is having and kicks her out of the house. Rosa gets mad when Maria is ‘famous’ in town as she is always spotted walking about with her doll. She takes out her frustrations by getting rough with her and yelling, screaming off the stupid daughter she is for not listening to her instructions of not bringing such toys out.

Because Maria continues to speak via Sakutaro, this only makes Rosa even angrier as she takes the doll and rips it apart! Quite heartbreaking to see Maria sad. Beatrice tries to console her and Maria wants her to revive Sakutaro. However that is not possible because Sakutaro was made by Rosa and if she herself denies it, there is no way he can be revived. Because of that, Maria wants to learn magic to avenge and kill her mother. No, kill the bad witch that is possessing her mother. Ange is on her way to Rokkenjima via boat with Amakusa. At first she wants this trip to be a way to satisfy herself in search for answers but after thinking how it isn’t other people who get to decide whether magic exists or not, she felt guilty about her treatment towards Maria and adds another goal to this trip to apologize to Maria for her sin long ago. The moment she accepts magic again, the Seven Sisters of Purgatory reappear before her. She also revives Sakutaro. Although she doesn’t acknowledge witches, whether magic exists or not, she must put this matter on hold. As for the contradiction in believing in the sisters, it means magic exists for those who believe in it. Now that she has accepted it, there is nothing strange for them all to exist. As Sakutaro is here, it proves he exists in her world despite not having a vessel. However Sakutaro says he doesn’t exist in Maria’s world because of what happened. Ange vows to reconcile with Maria and revive and reunite him with her. This is her only way for her to atone her sins. Ange’s aunt, Kasumi Sumadera who has been chasing after Ange ever since she ran away, is now closing in on her with her men.

Episode 22: Problem Child
The siblings are shocked to see Kinzou alive. I guess they lost the bet. Kinzou begins that since none of them succeeded in solving the epitaph, he will scrape it so select his successor. So does this mean Krauss will be the head because he is the eldest son? No. But the rest of the siblings are also not qualified. Therefore the Ushiromiya family will end with his generation. Nanjou believes the siblings have contributed something that money can’t buy: Family. Kinzou decides to change his thinking and will choose one of his grandchildren as the successor. As for his children, they will become sacrifice to revive Beatrice. He summons his Pendragon Memorial Troop, which are actually those military bunny girls. They’ve got an additional member, Siesta 00. He lets them choose and kill 6 of them and the unfortunate ones are Natsuhi, Hideyoshi, Eva, Rudolf, Genji and Rosa (she almost tried to kill Kinzou in a bid to stop him). Kinzou then summons Ronove, Virgilia and a new demon member, Gaap to help in the revival ritual. We return to the scene whereby Rosa just tore apart Sakutaro. As Maria continues to weep over her doll, Rosa is about to beat her when her hand breaks up like porcelain! That way, she will not beat her anymore. Maria in witch form along with Beatrice claims that hand of hers has beaten her more times than she has loved her. In fact, Sakutaro is the one who is her true friend and has always been by her side. Rosa use that busy work as excuse but when Maria mentions she knows about her affair, Rosa reveals her true colours that Maria is the obstruction to her happiness. Because no man would love a woman who has a child from another man. The damning statement comes when she says she has never truly loved her! She never wished she was born! Upset Maria kills her the way she did to Sakutaro. But not enough, she revives and kills her again. Even after 100 times, it still doesn’t feel satisfying although Maria looks like she’s enjoying herself.

Returning to Rokkenjima, the kids are waiting in the guest house. Battler teases Maria as a kid so she throws a big tantrum. Then she switches to her creepy witch mode before George calms her down. When they hear knocking on the door, it is Chiyo and Gouda. They explain all that has happened. Krauss and the rest are locked in a dungeon. Oddly, there is a phone and although it doesn’t connect to outside the island, Krauss manages to connect to the guest house and speaks to Jessica. He tells her not to avenge for mom and wants to stay in there to barricade themselves till morning passes. He fears Kinzou will kill them if they meet as he is not in his right state of mind. Soon, Kinzou visits the prisoners. This place is the basement of Kuwadorian. Kinzou was the one who placed the phone there as part of his plan. He will test them to see if any one of them is worthy of his succession. If so, he will suspend the ceremony to revive Beatrice. He wants Krauss to call the kids. If he refuses, this means he will not give the kids a chance and all of them will become immediate sacrifices for the ritual.

Episode 23: Breakthrough
Ange is seen visiting Nanjou’s son who is also a doctor. He relates having received a strange letter. Somebody used his name to send this letter to an unknown address. Naturally it was returned to him a few days later. Inside it contains a key, a bank card and a PIN number. After attending his father funeral, he visited the bank and when he showed the card, the clerk suddenly changed her character. He was guided to an underground vault and upon opening the safe deposit box, a huge sum of money! He immediately left as he didn’t want to have anything to do with this cursed money. Later she visits Chiyo’s son who also got the same kind of letter with similar contents. He didn’t understand its contents and left it there and forgot all about it. She then noticed one of Chiyo’s belongings in his possession. It isn’t the epitaph but its riddle felt like it. Then she sees Captain Kawabata to rent a boat to Rokkenjima as he is the family’s boatman to the island. Ever since that incident, many feared going to the island. He felt disgusted how the media tried to make fun of the incident. Nevertheless he promises to take care of her and see through she comes back alive. Ange sees something magical in the storeroom and now understands and realizes this fate of magic surrounding Maria and Beatrice. Back in time as the kids are going to be given their tests, they are made to lock Gouda and Chiyo in the storeroom. Then the kids will take turns to take the test and Jessica will go first.

In her room, she meets Ronove who gives her a letter with details of her test. Out of the 3 options, she is required to choose 1. The first, sacrifice her own life. The second, sacrifice her lover’s life. The third, sacrifice everyone else’s life. If none is chosen, all will be sacrificed. She chooses the first one as she cannot live a life without Kanon or couldn’t face him if she has everyone killed. George also receives the same letter from Gaap. Without hesitation, he chooses the third option. He just got engaged with Shannon tonight and he’ll do whatever it takes to be with her forever even if it means making the world his enemy. As the next family head, he is ready to do that. Ronove is about to take Jessica’s life but hold your horses. Her answer was as a girl. But as the head of the family it is different. She punches him in the face and won’t give everything up so easily. Despite Ronove’s unbreakable shield, she continues to throw punches. Her determination not to give up has her punches becoming stronger each time. Meanwhile Gaap wants George to begin his killing. Since he gets to choose the order who to kill first, he is going to kill Gaap! Why the scared look on her face? Although she fights him, George is no pushover and he has superior martial arts. His determination even creates a magical defence barrier when Gaap calls those demon butler goats as reinforcement.

Episode 24: Adjourn
Kanon uses his magical blades to cut the bars. Wait. He claims it is because he is human that he can do this? WTF?! No humans can do that! The Siesta sisters detect the jailbreak and report to Virgilia. She is incensed that Gaap used her demon butler goats without permission and orders the escapees to be killed immediately. Jessica and George are getting stronger in their relentless attack. As they are about to deal the final blow, Ronove and Gaap use a black hole to teleport them and thus they killed each other via the other’s devastating blow! But how come Jessica is still alive? Ronove used his magic to keep her so. She has just 3 minutes to finish up whatever she wants. How kind. She calls Battler to warn him about the non-human enemies. The escapees surface from a well at the back of the mansion after trekking through a secret underground tunnel. However Kanon and Shannon got instantly shot. Run! I guess Nanjou was too slow so he was next. This is followed by Krauss. Kyrie knows her time is up but she manages to get to safety to call Battler and tell him to accept the non-human enemies he will face. Then she apologizes for being mean to him just because he is Asumu’s son. When Kyrie’s voice is no longer heard, it’s a sign she has been killed. Battler receives a phone call from Beatrice who is going to test him herself. Battler tries to get Chiyo and Gouda but sees them hanged in the storeroom.

Confronting Beatrice, he wants to beat everybody up instead of taking her test. Well, if he wins, he’ll get to do that. He is given that letter of sacrificial choice. Because he has no loved one, Battler is thinking of putting Beatrice’s name and choosing this option. Beatrice decides to change the test and wants him to remember the sin he committed 6 years ago. No, it wasn’t about his dad remarried and he casted away his family name. It’s something closer to this island. Since he cannot remember, that is his sin and remembering it will be his test of atonement. It is hinted that because of this sin, all these lives were lost and he is part of the reason for this tragedy. Beatrice gives up on Battler’s test and returns to her room. Kinzou seems pretty delighted and chirpy after passing Maria’s test with flying colours. Since Beatrice is in a bad mood, she roasts him! Her servants wonder what is wrong. Seems she doesn’t find it fun anymore. She is done with this game. Battler thinks he has won but on the contrary, the game is abandoned for eternity with no winner or loser. Bernkastel, Lambdadelta and Ange are against Beatrice’s irresponsible decision to drop out as she was the one who dragged Battler into this. Beatrice questions Battlers qualification as her opponent. She gives Battler permission to speak the red truth. Although he could say Asumu is his mother, whenever he tries to say he was born from her, he could not and his heart starts feeling pain. Beatrice takes this as a sign of disrespect for refusing to do as he is told. It also means he lost his qualifications. Battler tries again but still couldn’t eke out a word. Beatrice says this proves he is not Asumu’s son. Everybody leaves the playing field. Beatrice is seen talking to Maria in a flower field. She thinks they are the only ones who understand magic. Maria looks on the bright side. If there is nobody else here, they won’t be hurt. After all, they are eternal.

Episode 25: Forced Move
Kawabata takes Ange and Amakusa to Rokkenjima as he explains the second secret port that exists on the island as well as the Kuwadorian mansion that he has not seen but was tasked by Kinzou to deliver supplies supposedly used by a woman. He believes this proves the existence of Beatrice living in that mansion. However one day Kinzou told him to stop delivering the goods and it is assumed she has died. That was 30 years ago. Ange goes alone to pay her respects to the family grave. Looking through Maria’s diary, she notices how her kind and gentle magic turned into those that kill. Maria now believes in such magic and calls out to Maria. Unfortunately it is Kasumi and her agents. After Kasumi slaps and torments her, she has her agents beat the crap out of her! Seems she is taking out her frustration on Ange as she hates her older sister Kyrie. Because Kyrie was supposed to succeed the family’s head, she ran away and the task was left to Kasumi. Her carefree life became a tormented one as she was forced to undergo strict training as the head. So by beating up Ange, she will forget her hatred and start over. It is then Ange felt how similar her life is to hers. Now she understands and sympathizes with Eva. Something about as the eldest daughter in the family, the burden fell on her shoulders. Then Eva pushed that role onto Rosa and in turn the reason she took it out on Maria. But Maria’s magic was powerful because despite being abused, she did not take it out on others. She severed all the pain and sadness with her magic. Eva was labelled a witch after the massacre as the media hounded her. Ange realizes could she have been Eva’s ally to help save her. Had she had one then, probably it wouldn’t have turned out this way.

Angie could now see Eva Beatrice. She feels pity for her. Eva Beatrice seems to be encouraging Kasumi to further insult Ange by mocking the contents of Maria’s diary and tearing its pages. This makes Ange mad and sad but she will make them believe in Maria’s magic if she can show it to them. Of course, they dare her believing that she can’t do it. She then starts praying to summon the Seven Sisters of Purgatory. Kasumi orders one of her agents to shoot her as Ange warn not to do it or he will die. Stubborn guy pulls the trigger but gets stabbed by one of the sisters. The Purgatory sisters return but Kasumi and the agents can’t see them because they lack love. The rest are shocked and disregarding Ange’s advice, they fire only to be stabbed. Kasumi refuses to believe all this and picks up the gun and fires. Same thing. She’s dead. Goodbye, pitiful aunt. With Eva Beatrice as the only one left, the witch turns into Eva. She claims she has come back from hell to kill Ange. But when she fires her gun, it backfires and rips her face. Ange must have been numb seeing all the blood so she helps put Eva out of her misery by shooting her. Bernkastel congratulates Ange for understanding all magic at the end of her journey. Ange acknowledges she is the last witch. But she has suspected Bernkastel has been lying to her. Because had she gone back to the past, she will not save her current self and only her past self will be saved. In the end, she still won’t be saved. Despite so, she acknowledges Bernkastel did try to teach her how to take her family back.

Episode 26: Sacrifice
Maria and Beatrice are happily together at flower field AKA the Golden Land when Ange pops up. Maria believes she is happy here and all her wishes are granted. Look, there is even the kind Rosa. But what about Sakutaro? The mention of this causes them to squirm. Ange believes the reason Beatrice cannot revive Sakutaro is because she is not a real witch. Ange can bring Sakutaro back to life but in exchange Maria must leave this place. She has Maria remember how Sakutaro looks like and pop! Here he is! The duo happily reunite as Maria thanks Ange as the greatest witch ever before leaving the land. Beatrice is in despair with this impossibility as she is whisked back to the game. But she still deems there is no worthy opponent as Battler is still reeling that he isn’t Asumu’s son. Because Beatrice cannot speak the red truth that Battler is not Kinzou’s grandson, Ange uses her blue truth that the one qualified to face Beatrice must be Kinzou’s grandson who is no other than Battler. Also, it doesn’t matter if he is Asumu’s son or not. Ange then talks to Battler that blood related isn’t important and what is more important are the bonds. She wants him to come home to his little sister who has been waiting very lonely since. Ange then reveals her true identity and this shocks Battler. But she starts bleeding and dying because a condition for her to be here is that she cannot reveal who she is to him. This motivates Battler that he will win this game and come home to her. Beatrice dares him to kill her as the only way for him to get home.

Battler begins his blue truths that Kinzou has been dead from the start and the mysterious X person adds to the total of 18 people. Beatrice argues the implausibility of the locked room where several people died in Natsuhi’s room. Battler counters this that if Rosa was an accomplice, there is no problem at all. For the third game, the locked room is also possible if Eva was the accomplice. For the fourth game, this X person is believed to have killed others with a gun. Only one problem: Remember how Kinzou showed himself before the siblings? So this proves he isn’t dead to begin with. On the contrary, Kinzou is already dead. Somebody else assumed his name and identity and the siblings just acknowledged it. And since Beatrice cannot confirm that the characters possess multiple aliases, Battler checkmates grandpa. All the other deaths can be attributed to this X person. Beatrice wants him to finish her off by claiming witches don’t exist. However he won’t end it yet because she still has something to hide. Beatrice laughs at him because she was going to give him an easy win. Now that it turns out like this, she’ll make him regret for choosing the hard way. So she makes her red truth despite agreeing Kinzou is already dead, there are no more than 17 people exist and thus the 18th person is non-existent. This also applies to all games. Battler begins his counter argument. Each time, Beatrice gets painfully stabbed by daggers. For the first game, the deaths in the shed could be done by anyone without an alibi. As for in the parlour, the culprit could be the one who faked his/her own death using a fake corpse. If not, simultaneous murders whereby each killed each other with a gun in which Maria proceed to hide it. In the second game, the deaths in the chapel’s banquet mean somebody put bombs in their meal! The third game’s locked room could only mean the culprit murdered each of them in their respective rooms to create the locked room chains. The culprit could just pretend to discover the corpses and the key. Then there’s a counter during Eva Beatrice’s game about somebody pretending to be dead.

At this point, Beatrice has been stabbed so much that she is in pain. However she cannot die and pleads for Battler to kill her. How does it feel, the pain of all those she has killed? She will expose her heart for him to crush so she can die. Her soul floats down to him as she states her final riddle. Battler is the only one left alive on the island. She is now before him and going to kill him. Who is she? The scene changes to where Bernkastel and Lambdadelta are discussing the interesting game that was. Ange was a trump card to get Battler back on track when he mistook his goal. They just felt the piece required so much preparation. While Bernkastel thinks Battler answered most of the riddles correctly, Lambdadelta believes almost all were wrong. Lambdadelta claims that girl still has lots of hidden moves and none of the riddles have been solved. But they believe Beatrice won’t win. Therefore they both declare that Beatrice cannot win and a miracle will not occur.

Money, Murder, Magic, Mystery, Mayhem – When Seagulls Cry Blood
Hey wait! WTF?! What the hell is that unsatisfying cliff-hanger?! Here I am at the last episodes already cracking my brains at all the confusion, especially trying to remember the past games and reconcile how Battler diffuses all that magic load and bull. It was already hard for me to keep up at the very rushed pace of the final episode and then they end it with this crap by not revealing the answer. I mean, I was actually dying to know the answer. Even if the answer would be crap, hey, at least it was answered. Even more confusing crap as we see Bernkastel and Lambdadelta whom I thought hate each other’s guts, conspiring to make Beatrice suffer and play the game for all eternity. So from the looks of it, I am deducing that Battler and Beatrice were never truly saved and the tragedy continues to repeat in an endless loop. Sigh. If only I had some witch powers and put forth my red truth statements to get it straight with the answer.

As interesting as it is, I also have my fair share of confusion of everything that is going on (this is not included the final episode mess that messed with my head). At least I think I understood some of the important parts for me to continue watching and keeping my eyes glued to the screen. Because I did not play the game in which this series was adapted from, it was confusing to say the least when they threw in magic, supernatural, reviving characters that are killed off to reset the story and even going back and forth between the timelines. Because the game itself as I briefly read has lots of chapters and other characters, spanning a rich story, plot and other characters that are interrelated with each other to the saga. So when they start off the first arc by killing off so many characters, I was ‘worried’ how the heck are they going to fill in the rest of the episodes? And then they had this reset thing… Oh brother.

The mix of the many characters does play an important part in shaping the story and its direction. Although I feel that mainly the adults and the servants suffer from lack of character development because usually many of them are being killed off as sacrifice at the start of each arc. Besides their greed to take over Kinzou’s wealth, each of them has an interesting and dark past that just begs to be explored. Like Battler’s family, Rudolf taking on Kyrie as his second wife after Asumu’s death. If Battler is not even Asumu’s son, then whose son is he to? You must be wondering who is Maria’s father and thus Rosa’s husband then. If you want to trace out the family tree, I believe it is going to be quite a complicated matter. What about Kanon’s real name? Despite with lots of interesting characters (heck, why did they even introduce a new character, Gaap in the final game?), it is sad to see that it suffers from developing them further for the sake of the confusing plot. But if that is how the game is played, so be it.

Maria is one of the more prominent characters in the series although her character was dormant in the middle arcs. At first, this loli comes off as both cute and annoying. Whenever she is looking all cute, you can’t help feel you want to cuddle and squeeze her. And then when she goes into her childish retard mode (“ugh-ugh-ugh-ugh-ugh…” Just stop it already!), you just feel like wanting to strangle her to keep her mouth shut. And then you feel bad when you see Rosa do the job for you. Child abuse not good… However at certain times, she will be as creepy as f*ck that it scares the heck out of you. I can say that Maria is a character that is all cute, annoying and creepy all at the same time. You wonder why the rest do not start fearing her when she goes into her creepy witch mode. Shouldn’t they suspect something is wrong? Like, is she being possessed? Maybe they don’t believe in the supernatural because money is on the mind of the adults. Perhaps everyone knows about Maria’s tendency to believe in witches and her acting is just part of her witch act and thus nobody is really alarmed or found it strange when she became Beatrice’s messenger.

Ever since the revelation that Kinzou has died before the family gathers, it throws even further questions like who the heck is this guy who is masquerading as Kinzou? And if there were 17 instead of 18 people on the island, doesn’t that statement itself show that Kinzou is not part of this number? Then who the heck is he? Wait. Don’t tell me. He is a witch and a supernatural just like Beatrice as such characters do not count in the number of people on Rokkenjima. Because when you see this guy summoning the demons for his bid, I guess it makes sense that Kinzou wasn’t human to begin with. But then again, when you have Kanon being able to use magical blades and George and Jessica able to pull off magical barrier moves, it is certainly more than meets the eye.

I have a feeling that Battler is this anime’s version of Phoenix Wright. He is like the supernatural version of that attorney series. I won’t go so far to say that he is amazing in coming up with reasons to deny Beatrice’s magical murders because there are times where he is stuck in a rut and it took some sort of unbelievable supernatural phenomenon to get him back on his feet. I mean, in the second game he was dead but then revived thanks to his returned motivation. Isn’t this ironically like supernatural itself? But you can’t blame him for scratching his head and going crazy trying to find the right logical answers as Beatrice keeps spamming stuffs in which everybody would have taken the easy way out and accept it is magic. Like Santa, huh? So to end it and show his ‘brilliance’, I guess that is why they rushed the final episode by spamming him countering Beatrice’s motives after motives. Even so, I think those answers could have easily been overwritten and denied had she just used her red truths. Something tells me Beatrice is letting him win just to end it but like Bernkastel and Lambdadelta having ulterior motives, even throwing in that Ange side distraction and freeing Maria from the Golden Land seem like a very big elaborated scheme that boils down to this. Oh well. Battler, you’ll have to live up to your name by continuing to battle Beatrice for eternity.

Now, I have not watched the other When They Cry series, namely the 2 seasons of the Higurashi series as well as its spin-off. However something tells me that there are lots of elements and trivia that fans could spot borrowed from that series making its cameo here. What made me say this is when Bernkastel first appeared, I thought she looked like a character from Higurashi. I know I said I have not watched any single episode of that show but of course I have seen pictures from it and ironically, I remember the looks of some of the characters. In fact as I found out, Bernkastel indeed looks like a character from Higurashi and is also voiced by the same character! Therefore, it led me to believe that other than trying to understand and solve the mystery of this show, fans of the series can get extra pleasure from spotting Higurashi trivia all over the place.

Art and drawing seems pretty okay. Nothing to shout about since there are quite some good looking characters so well yeah, I can’t really complain. Seeing 2009 isn’t far away but far enough to be considered ‘old’ in today’s standards, I guess the animation is pretty decent and satisfy the conventional standards of that time. As said, there are many trivia with the Higurashi series and some of the characters do borrow closely their designs from there. But is it me or does Sakutaro look like Bleach’s Kon? Also to note is that there is some amount of blood and gore in this series especially when the murders and killings occur. It is so gross that it had to be purposely censored out with a mosaic. I believe this is taken away in the DVDs? But some scenes are not censored like Beatrice’s death stabbing scene that has blood just gushing out like as though she is a fountain.

There are many famous seiyuus lending their voices to this series. At least there are lots of them that I instantly recognized. Most notably, Sayaka Ohara as Beatrice. I believe that of all the villainess roles that she has voiced, this is considered to be one of the best and could in fact be the best of the lot. She is very fitting in her role as the devilish Beatrice, enjoying tormenting the pawns in her game. Kudos and good job to her. Another notable one is Yui Horie is Maria. Throughout her illustrious voice acting career, none has ever come close to making her character as cute, annoying and creepy all at the same time. At least, for all the animes that I have watched her voiced in. Sometimes when she gets too creepy, it makes me wonder if this is the same Yui Horie that I know of. Speaking of which, I was having this dilemma if Rie Kugimiya was the voice behind Shannon. It sounded like her minus her tsundere voice but I was still doubtful it could be somebody else that sounded closely to her. True enough, it was her alright.

The rest of the other recognizable casts include Daisuke Ono as Battler, Marina Inoue as Jessica, Kenichi Suzumura as George, Ami Koshimizu as Rosa, Yu Kobayashi as Kanon, Juurouta Kosugi as Krauss, Rikiya Koyama as Rudolf, Tomokazu Sugita as Ronove, Yukari Tamura as Bernkastel, Rina Satou as Ange and Koji Yusa as Amakusa. Those that I missed out and couldn’t recognize perhaps due to lack of screen time presence include Youko Hikasa as Satan, Aki Toyosaki as Asmodeus and Eri Kitamura as Siesta 410. For the umpteenth time, isn’t that Kikuko Inoue behind Virgilia’s voice? And Minori Chihara behind Sakutaro? Really? That was her? Yuki Kaida is Gaap? I thought Kinzou sounded familiar but I couldn’t recall his name until I made a little reference. It’s Mugihito behind the family head. Wow. That is indeed a lot of stars that I recognized.

For the rest of the seiyuus that I don’t recognize (sorry) and just out of respect I’ll list them out here. They include Miki Itou as Eva (Fujimura in Fate series), Emi Shinohara as Natsuhi (Sailor Jupiter in Sailormoon series), Atsuko Tanaka doubling as Kyrie and Kasumi (Caster in Fate series), Masashi Hirose as Hideyoshi (Rikishiman in Kinnikuman series), Akihiko Ishizumi as Nanjou (Shioizumi in Asura Cryin’), Fuyuka Oura as Lambdadelta (Ren in To Love-Ru series), Masato Funaki as Genji (Mosqueda in Bleach), Hitoshi Bifu as Gouda (Buccha in Air Gear), Yasuko Hatori as Chiyo (Mira in Blade & Soul), Ayano Niina as Mammon (Lisette in 11eyes), Madoka Yonezawa as Leviathan (Ui in K-ON!), Yuka Saitou as Lucifer (Tamamo in Daitoshokan No Hitsujikai) and Seiko Yoshida as Belphegor (Kyousuke in Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica).

The opening theme, Katayoku No Tori by Akiko Shikata is as weird as it can get but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t sound good. Although it feels befitting of the madness of the series, it is made very dramatic with superb choir voices in the background singing in Latin. Or is it Italian? But the more fitting song of the series couldn’t be much better than the ending theme, La Divina Tragedia – Makyoku sung by Jimang. Aside the dramatic choir voices, this song is like a mad scientist or even a mad guy singing his happy heart out at all the madness. Hearing it at first might sound weird, but after hearing it a few times, I have this strange feeling that it doesn’t sound as bad I wanted it to be and heck, sometimes I caught myself trying to sing along to his mad style! Creepy?

Overall, this series isn’t a bad one but the confusion over what is going on sometimes left me stumped at times and it can get a little frustrating. Especially the very disappointing way they ended the series, it feels like leaving a bad aftertaste in the mouth. But thankfully it is not as bad to the point where I would be suffering from severe migraine effects and will not be able to think for a few days. Worse than a hangover. Sorry, I was exaggerating. Maybe the witches healed my headache to understand this mess? Nah. Hah. So I don’t believe in magic? Of course I do. The magic of anime! That itself is the red statement of truth!
